PSAT REGISTRATION DUE TOMORROW!
Registering to take to take the PSAT exam being held at Intellectual Virtues Academy High School on Wednesday, October 10th, is a two step process.

STEP 1 is submitting this form by October 4th at 8:00 AM.

STEP 2 is payment, which will need to be completed in person at the Academy by October 5th. Contact the main office with any additional questions, 562.283.4456.

In junior year the PSAT serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). While the PSAT is primarily designed for juniors, many sophomores will take the exam as practice for the NMSQT.

Scores often improve between sophomore and junior years as students develop their skills in the areas on the exam. To learn more about the PSAT, visit  collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/inside-the-test .

SPIRIT WEEK- OCTOBER 8- 12

Wednesday- Snazzy vs. Sleepy
Thursday- Past Self vs. Future Self

APPLICATION WINDOW IS NOW OPEN FOR 2019-2020
Help spread the word about the Academy this admission season!

The Academy is starting to receive applications for students going into 9th through 12th grade for next year. If you are a current Academy family, this is a great time to submit an application for a sibling going into high school next year.

Most people hear about the Academy through word-of-mouth. Last year was the Academy's largest enrollment year. To help continue our growth, this is a great time to encourage friends, neighbors, and family members to submit an application. In addition to the organic conversations you have with family and friends, would you be willing to do some intentional marketing for our school? This might include:

  • keeping materials with you to pass out to family, friends, middle school acquaintances (materials are available by request)
  • dropping off materials (with approval!) wherever you're connected: community centers, medical offices, religious centers, schools, parent groups, gyms
  • introduce Mrs. Day to possible community partners
  • inviting friends to attend an Information Session (Oct. 13 at 10 a.m., Nov. 1 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 27 at 10 a.m.)
  • inviting friends to join you on a school tour (click here for dates)
  • posting our interest events on your social media pages (AcademyLBHS)
  • hosting an in-home "What's the Academy?" event (your friends, Academy staff presents; Spanish translator provided if necessary!)

Your support would not only be helpful for families searching for a good fit for high school, but it also helps us to increase the Academy's exposure throughout Long Beach and surrounding communities.

Thank you so much for considering! If interested, please email  Crystal Day  to let us know you're willing to help!
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES COMING-UP
Advisors are in the process of scheduling Student Led Conferences for all students for the week of October 15th. If you haven't already received a phone call, you should expect one by the end of the week, or call 562.283.4456 to schedule one.

We align the conference process with our mission : to foster student's growth in the intellectual virtues in a thoughtful, challenging, and supportive academic environment.  We believe partnering with our Academy families , collaboratively and holistically guides our students towards success.

Every Academy student is given the opportunity to take the lead, and speak their truth, while demonstrating intellectual courage and thoroughness . Students write reflection letters to identify what struggles they have faced, and where they have grown. Students thoughtfully connect their experiences to the virtues, deepening their understanding of their own thinking and learning. Finally, conference reflections end with appreciations.

Here are examples of student reflection letters from different students :

"The class I feel most successful in is Mr. Schmidt's class... the days I leave that class I feel positive and upbeat about everything that we learned."

The class l’m struggling with is Algebra... I have to use tenacity in this class because it’s easy to give up, but I have to keep going. Although this class is hard, I appreciate the challenge."

"The students and teachers make me feel like I belong... they don’t put me down or say I’m weird or nerdy. The teachers also want the best of me. They push me harder and are learning know my strengths and weaknesses."
HOST FAMILY NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENT
There is no better way to introduce young people to other cultures than with an exchange program. Having someone come into your home to learn from you and share with you is truly rewarding.

Greenheart Exchange is currently looking for a host family for a female exchange student from Hong Kong.  She speaks fluent english and has a stellar academic record. She loves to dance, sing, listen to pop music, and skateboard. If you are interested in being a host family, please contact the local Greenheart coordinator, Hadeel Judeh at 562-644-0008 or hjgreenheart@gmail.com .

There will also be additional opportunities for families to host students from other countries in the future. If you are interested in being a host family, please contact the local Greenheart coordinator, Hadeel Judeh .
