CMS District Update on COVID-19
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools continues to monitor the situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus). Currently, there are two confirmed cases in North Carolina, one in Wake County and the other in Chatham County. District leaders are aware that the situation could change quickly, and they want to be prepared.

For this reason, teams from CMS have met with other school leaders this week in Greensboro to share best practices, and staff members have been in constant coordination with city and county health and governmental leaders. Out of an abundance of caution, CMS has provided schools with guidance on travel for field trips for students and some restrictions on travel for staff to attend conferences.

Proctors Needed for EOG/EOC Testing
We're halfway through the year - which means it's never too early to start thinking about end-of-grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) testing. We need volunteers to proctor the following exams:

  • May 27 - Reading EOG
  • May 28 - Math EOG/Math 1 EOC
  • June 2 - 8th Grade Science EOG

More than 50 volunteers are needed each day to proctor exams. Click here to sign up to volunteer!
Help Boost Literacy by Becoming a Reading Buddy!
Are you interested in reading with one of our amazing scholars once or twice a week? Our Reading Buddies Program is an amazing program matching a volunteer with one of our scholars to read books on a weekly basis together. Helping to model good reading, the Reading Buddies program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. The school will have a selection of books for the scholar and Reading Buddy to select from based on the scholar’s reading level.

The times and days will be based on your availability and the scholar’s schedule.

If you are interested in this amazing program, please e-mail Mrs. Courtney Pierce, our dean of instruction, at courtneye.pierce@cms.k12.nc.us

All volunteers must be a registered CMS Volunteer.  Click here to register.

New Clubs Starting Soon - Sign Up Today to Volunteer!
Clubs are a great way for scholars to work with different peers and learn new skills...and a phenomenal way for staff members to build relationships with scholars. SMS is excited to offer over 20 clubs to our scholars! The clubs range from academically-based clubs to sports-related. Scholars will be in the same club for one semester and may choose a new club in January.
