Instruments of God's Peace...
|
|
This week we remember St. Francis, a friar who lived in 12th century Italy. Francis was a lover of God's creation and all its creatures. Francis had his life turned upside down by God, experiencing conversion as a young, carefree, wealthy man. Following a mystical call from the cross, Francis renounced his wealth and chose a life of simplicity and integrity, rebuilding the Church as he rebuilt his own life. One of the spiritual gifts we attribute to Francis is a prayer that he may have written. Whether or not he actually penned it, it closely conveys his values and spirit. As we prepare for worship, and as we live through these divided times as a nation, may we remember that we have unity in Christ. We are called to love, mercy, forgiveness and gratitude. God calls us again and again to this unity. This prayer asks God to make us instruments of this unity.

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled
as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

It's that time again, our next soup kitchen is
Thursday, October 11th, 3:30 - 6:30ish at St. Paul's Newport.
As always, we need meatloaves cooked and wrapped in foil, apple juice, wrapped finger desserts, and fruit - oranges, pears and bananas. Help setting up, serving and cleaning up is always needed too and greatly appreciated. Blessings for all you do!

Prepare Yourself for Worship...
|
Worship Notes
You will notice a change in the bulletins for all three worship services. At the 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. services the bulletins will contain an outline of the service, referring worshipers to the Book of Common Prayer, found in the pews.
In the 10 a.m. contemporary service, we use an authorized liturgy of the Episcopal Church from a resource called Enriching our Worship. We will print the outline of the service, the scriptures, words spoken by the people together and music (starting in October.) We have reduced much of the text said by the presider alone.
At 10 a.m. we are collecting food for the pantry at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Please bring your non-perishable offerings and place them in the wagon as you enter. They will come forward to the altar as a representation of our thanks and praise as well as our love for our neighbors. We will always need someone to pull the wagon forward at the offertory, preceding our gifts of money, bread and wine. If you or your child want to pull the wagon, ask a greeter as you enter.
As we gather for worship at 10 a.m. please remember that some who enter the chapel early are hoping to have a time and space for a bit of peace and prayer. As much as we love to greet and catch up with one another, please enjoy the hearty conversations in the gathering space.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Looking to enhance your knowledge of the bible and your experience of worship?
Believe it or not, there is an easy way to do both! The lectionary is the book that contains the Sunday readings. There are three year-long cycles of readings: A, B, and C. If you come to church each Sunday for three years, you will hear almost the entire bible. To find the readings, all you need to do is click on the link below! Reading and praying through these sacred texts before coming to church could be a game changer for your alertness in worship and your biblical knowledge.

Have You Joined Us On The Journey?
St. Mary's offers a year-long Bible study on Sundays at 9 with a mirror class Wednesdays at noon. The text we are using to navigate our journey is called The Path. If at any point you want to take part, you can access The Path for free here:

Last week we read and discussed Chapter 2, on Cain & Abel, The Flood, and Babel. To prepare for class on Oct. 7 or 10 , you should read chapter 3 on Abraham, the Ancestor of A Multitude. The chapters are short, and perfect to read as a couple, by one's self, or as a family at home. You are always welcome to attend a Sunday or Wednesday class!

Good News For Kids During the 10AM service each week that Sunday School is held, Children will be invited to hear a kid's gospel and bible lesson together as the sermon is taking place. They will go with two leaders and will return during the sign of peace. Children are encouraged to worship at any and all of our services, and getting them accustomed to the prayers and responses is important. "Good News For Kids" is a way to also engage them deeper in the bible readings at the service. Please join us!
Weekly Contemplative Practice
Saturdays 4 pm, a prayer and scripture study including silence and reflection will be held in the church. This weekly offering is a perfect prelude to our contemplative service at 5. This practice will open new doors of prayer and discovery for anyone looking to go deeper in their life of faith. If you wish to know the presence of God in the quiet grounding of sacred text and community, join us in the historic church.

Children & Parents are encouraged to come to the St. Mary's campus.
At 3:30 our own Jenny Williams teaches Story & Stretch for children ages 3-5 with their caregiver and at 4:30 Jenny teaches Yoga for Kids for those in K-4th grade. During both of those classes Jennifer Pedrick and Shelley Dungan host Parent Wellness Circles designed to strengthen and support parents. We are using The Living Compass ministry materials.

Jennifer is leading a free session of JourneyDance from 6-7PM followed by a Harmonic Sound Healing Journey concert by Rosie Warburton from 7:15-8:30 PM. Tickets for the Sound Journey are $15 available on

This restorative & healing retreat will be led by The Reverend Jennifer Pedrick & Shelley Dungan, director of The Sacred Center. Please join us for a restorative afternoon that includes gentle stretching, scripture, contemplative practices, meditation, prayer and Holy Communion. This month we will draw inspiration from Hebrews 4:16 - Finding mercy and grace in time of need.

The ladies in the St. Mary's Prayer Shawl Ministry have started knitting and crocheting the items for their annual donation to the Dr. Martin Luther King Center. The items include mittens, hats, and baby blankets. Anyone is welcome to participate. Yarn can be supplied if needed. Tickets going fast for revival with Bishop Curry in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 21
If you want to hear Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry preach at the next Episcopal Revival, act quickly!
Revival Sunday in western Massachusetts is October 21, with an event at 5 p.m. at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worcester. A procession to the theatre from nearby Fuller Park begins at 4:30.
The first day that free tickets were available, 1,000 out of an available 2,000 were snapped up. If you want to be part of this Jesus Movement event, free tickets are available online at the revivial website.
The revival also will be livestreamed. You will hear emotional music and a memorable sermon from Bishop Curry, who's being billed as "The Royal Wedding Preacher" due to his address at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meaghan Markle.

AwakeningSoul is an uplifting, four-day event held annually in Asheville, NC
November 8-11, 2018.
AwakeningSoul was formed in 2012 by Fran McKendree and is a partnership hosting an annual conference embodying 'Sustenance, Sanctuary and Inspiration.' Fran says "AwakeningSoul is a coming together of all the things I care most about - relationships, trust, soul-searching, inspiring conversation, beautiful music and art, laughter, and a palpable awareness of the presence and nearness of God."
