Assessing the Impact of a Pharmacist-led, Data-driven Intervention to Improve Adult Vaccinations

The practice of adult immunization is ever changing with addition of new knowledge, products, and recommendations. High-quality adult immunization requires a successful dynamic information exchange and coordination of care between the multiple critical players in immunization care: the physician, practice team (including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, nurses, and support staff), the pharmacist, and the patient/consumer. In an attempt to improve the pneumococcal and influenza immunization rates among Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug plan members enrolled with Humana Inc., the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) coordinated a pilot study that designed, implemented, and evaluated a pharmacist-led, data-driven vaccination program to identify and message pharmacists regarding members indicated for the two types of immunizations. During this webinar, we will present an overview of this program and the results of the pilot study.

Margaret Pasquale, PhD serves as a Research Manager at Compre hensive Health Insights, with expertise in health economics.  In this role, she manages teams of researchers involved in collaborations with external clients.  D r. Pasquale has extensive experience developing study designs and managing research projects in various therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular disease, COPD, diabetes, heart failure, inflammation, musculoskeletal conditions, oncology, opioid abuse, and pain management. Her work at Comprehensive Health Insights has involved retrospective and prospective analyses across multiple therapeutic areas.   Prior to Comprehensive Health Insights Dr. Pasquale's experience spanned both academia and industry.  She conducted studies in health economics and outcomes research as well as in pricing and reimbursement.  She has extensive experience in health economic modeling and in conducting cost-effectiveness studies in conjunction with comparative effectiveness research.  She has also worked with quality of life endpoints.  While in academia her research focused primarily on pharmaceutical price discounts obtained by large hospital buyers.   Dr. Pasquale has published in American Health and Drug Benefits, American Journal of Managed Care, American Journal of Pharmacy Benefits, Drug Safety, International Journal of COPD, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy, Medical Decision-Making, Osteoporosis International, Pain Practice, and Value in Health, among other journals. 

Rich Sheer,  has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries as a senior data analyst and SAS programmer.  He currently serves as principal researcher at Comprehensive Health Insights (Humana) after having worked in different capacities, including outcomes research, disease management, and consumer product safety, covering a wide range of areas from osteoporosis to cardiovascular disease to pain management.  Mr. Sheer specializes in the use of SAS, SQL, and Excel to query large administrative claims databases, run statistical analyses (including linear and logistic regression, survival analysis, propensity score matching, and predictive modeling); generate reports, and present results and interpretations for use in executive summaries and publications.  He regularly contributes to study design, protocol development, and the co-authoring of abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.  Mr. Sheer also serves on his organization's Quality Committee and develops standardized SAS code and documentation for the calculation of claims-based risk scores, healthcare resource utilization and costs, and assessing gaps in coverage.
