Lamont, officials get firsthand look at new North Haven Amazon facility
Local and state officials, including Gov. Ned Lamont and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, got a first look Thursday at Amazon's North Haven fulfillment center, set to begin operating this summer.
The company is on track to hire 1,800 full-time associates, beginning with job fairs at the end of June, and elected officials saw Amazon's operation firsthand touring the 855,000-square-foot facility Thursday.
"This is how we continue to modernize our economy, by making these changes and making it happen for Amazon, and Amazon is making it happen for small businesses, as well," Lamont said after the tour. "You're helping take Connecticut into the 21st century. We should welcome this, what you do for small business and what you do for the community."
The company will begin hiring rapidly, signing on as many as 100 people per week once the job fairs begin, the facility's Director of Operations Richard Dyce said, so that by the end of July, the facility will already employ about 1,000 people.

East Haven, WinnDevelopment break ground on old high school conversion project
For 21 years now, the old East Haven High School building at 200 Tyler St. - a building woven into the fabric of so many East Haveners' lives - has sat largely vacant and mostly idle, waiting for the next shoe to drop.
Now, those days are over.
The town and WinnDevelopment on Wednesday broke ground on the $21.5 million "adaptive reuse" project, which will convert the 83-year-old building to 70 mixed-income apartments for seniors in front and a community center with meeting space, a theater, gym and a renovated pool in back, and which actually already is well underway.
Workers have been working on the building - which is being rebranded "The Tyler" - since March. A few were working even as Wednesday's groundbreaking was going on, and several apartments already are framed-out within the shell of the old school.
Officials on all sides hailed the public-private partnership that brought the project through to construction.

Report: Quinnipiac is the best school for getting a job
There are many things to consider when choosing a college or university, but more often than not, the end goal is to graduate and get a good job.
Luckily for Connecticut students, the top school for getting a job is right here in the Nutmeg State, according to career site Zippia.
Using the Department of Education College Scorecard data, the site searched for the college in each state with the" highest listed job placement numbers, looking specifically at employment levels at year 10 after students enrolled.
In Connecticut, that school is Quinnipiac University in Hamden. And what's more, Zippia found Quinnipiac to be the top school for getting a job nationwide based on employment rates.

UI wants to help greater New Haven, Bridgeport homeowners consider solar.

The new online system developed by United Illuminating, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. is intended to allow Greater New Haven and Bridgeport area homeowners to determine if solar is a good fit for their neighborhood's electric system, according to a release.
"We know that our customers are seeing more rooftop solar systems as they drive around their neighborhoods, and naturally they may be wondering if this is a good option for them. We want to make it easy for them as they get started," said Tony Marone, president and CEO of Avangrid Networks, in the release.
"We understand that residential solar may be an opportunity for some customers to manage their energy consumption, and UI - along with the other AVANGRID companies - has been innovating and adapting in order to empower our customers to manage their energy usage, improve the efficiency of the grid and contribute to a cleaner environment," he said.
The new online tool, called an Interconnection Feasibility Map can be found at uinet.com (click "Smart Energy" and select "Distributed Generation"). When there, customers enter a residential address or zoom in to find the property.
