Coming and going
We are off to a good start, from the first of the year until the first day of summer we have found homes for 138 cats, kittens,dogs, and puppies. We returned 63 dogs and 1 cat to their grateful owners.

Artist Sandy Guinup, who has lived in Port Townsend for over twenty years, has generously offered to put many of her paintings up for sale to benefit the Humane Society of Jefferson County.
Sandy has been heavily influenced by the beauty of the PT area as well as the vibrant art scene here. She often uses water color paint on "Yupo" paper (a plastic surface), canvas, as well as traditional water color paper. As she is motivated to find homes for her art as she winds down her career, all offers are welcome.
The artist received undergraduate and masters degrees from Ohio State University, Long Beach State University, CA, and Pt. Loma College, San Diego, CA. She also attended summer art studies in Mallorca, Spain, as well as taking art classes at Santa Rosa Jr. College, CA and Peninsula College, PT.
Sandy taught art in L.A. and Orange County, California for twenty years, and has exhibited her work at Ohio State University and in California at Marin County, Sebastopol Gallery, and Healdsburg Gallery. Locally, her works have been shown at Tyler Street Café, Uptown Dental, Peninsula College, Jefferson County Hospital, and for fifteen years at Northwind Art Center, where she won Best In Show in 2011.
The public can view her works and purchase paintings on Saturday, July 13th from 10 to 2 at 1024 Monroe Street, Port Townsend.
We are blessed that she has decided to send her paintings out to the world and donating the proceeds to the cats and dogs in our care!

Surprises from a transferred dog
We have been able to transfer in dogs from very crowded shelters. The mother of these puppies, Hailey, is a sweet, friendly girl who came to us from a shelter in Modesto, CA. We did not know until she arrived that she was expecting puppies! As it turns out, she had been kenneled with a male dog (a German shepherd ). One thing led to another and...10 puppies.
They will be available after surgeries 7/5 and there will be meet and greets only for approved applicants. They are still with their foster who deserves a medal at least! She has done an amazing job, all while fostering kittens too. Applications are on our
Adopt page or at the shelter, or you may email staff for one.

Do Good Feel Good Yoga for us. Every body can do it. Easy and fun for all. Get your down dog on September 2, 5:30-6:30 pm.
The second annual Bless the Beasts and Children 0.5k "run" will be September 29. More like a stroll, fun will be had! Can't make it? No worry- you can buy a ticket to stay home! We and the YMCA, the Sea Scouts, and Kicks for Kids will benefit. From PT Brewery to the Pourhouse with a break for a treat halfway (those 300 yards can be exhausting!) Tickets include a cool decal, one drink token, a hand painted T shirt, and likely some bad jokes. Children free with a paying adult; pets and costumes welcome.

Check out the new Washington State special license plate! $28 of the fee collected for each new or renewed plate will go directly to the Washington Federation of Animal Care & Control Agencies to be given as grants for spay/neuter services. We are a member of the federation.

Our Shelter relies on the kindness of community members to fill the holes in our operating budget. Without gifts from these Friends of the Shelter we couldn't keep giving the animals the loving care they are accustomed to. One of the ways we have been blessed is when thoughtful people add the Humane Society of Jefferson County, WA as a beneficiary of Bequests and Estate Plan Gifts.
BEQUESTS AND ESTATE PLAN GIFTS
A bequest is a gift from your estate-a transfer of cash, securities, or other property made through your estate plans. You can make a bequest to The Humane Society of Jefferson County, Washington, by including language in your will or living trust leaving a portion of your estate to "The Humane Society of Jefferson County, WA, in Port Townsend, Washington," or by designating the Humane Society as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy.

ve you ever wondered if the world of apps has neglected pets or pet owners? In fact, many apps have been developed that make life with your pet easier. From apps that help you track vet appointments and medications, to those that make vacationing with your pet easier, check out these, often free, goodies.
Perhaps you've accessed a medical client service that lets you view your medical test results and communicate with your own doctor. Now, this type of high-tech tool is also available to vets and their clients. VitusVet was developed by a vet to help him communicate better with human clients to help his animal patients. If you can talk your vet into using VitusVet, it will help streamline their appointment process and more. If you download this free app, it will allow you to maintain a digital record of your pet's records that you can access on your phone. You can set reminders about appointments and vaccinations, keep a profile for more than one pet, and even share pet info with your pet sitter.
Is your dog a wanderer? Ever had your dog go astray, in the dog park, your neighborhood, or miles away? Whistle is an app that uses GPS technology and your phone to alert you if your dog gets out and find Fido almost anywhere. You can even track your dog's activity and rest to make sure they're keeping in shape by getting their steps in just as you do with a pedometer. This one does require a subscription, but there's a free, 90-day money back guarantee if it's not your cup of tea. There are of course other GPS trackers.
To maintain your dog's or cat's optimal health, get this app! You can store your vet's contact information, read articles about common pet health problems, and get first aid tips. You can use the app to locate vets and hotels that welcome pets that are near you (handy for travelling with your pet). You might want to share the interactive quizzes in the app with your kids who can earn badges and share their results with friends. And, best part, the app is free.
Dog training can be a challenge. That's where a dog training app like Dogo comes in. "Dogo was created by two founders - husband and wife. Tadas, iOS developer, and his wife Rasa is a veterinary doctor. They started working on the app almost two years ago and now they have a small team of 5 people." Available for your iPhone or Android phone, this app provides easy to follow lessons and tips for training.
Though we don't intend to endorse any individual app, we want to provide just a small sampling of the types of apps that are available out there to give you some ideas. Search online with the term "apps for pets" or "apps for pet owners" to find the app that's right for you.
