We knew this day - Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement -  was coming. We have been waiting in fear. We don't know who his replacement will be, but we do know the nominee will be an extreme conservative committed to Donald Trump's anti-woman, anti-family and anti-immigration agenda.

Trump has promised to appoint justices who will overturn Roe v Wade. He was good to his word. Justice Neil Gorsuch's appointment was the beginning of the end to women's legal right to have an abortion. Kennedy, was a swing vote in that landmark case. Trump will make sure the next justice is firmly committed to overturning Roe.

The legality of abortion will then be up to individual states, which most likely will uphold a ban. Based on the amount and degree of anti-choice legislation coming from the state houses, women's reproductive freedom will not be protected on the state level.

With effectively no check on Trump's ability to control the destiny of the court, the far right could assert its ideological power for a generation. (1) Every issue you care about will be impacted. Our country will be permanently changed for the worse with a court that will cater to Trump's ideology.

Trump will leave a damaging, lingering mark on our nation, even after he leaves office. From women's rights to voting rights to same-sex marriage, every issue is under attack. No protection is guaranteed.

This week we have been focused on the Supreme Court. However, Trump has been nominating at a record pace judges to the Circuit Court. These judges, who are predominately white and male, also serve for life. He is dramatically remaking American's courts to reflect his dangerous, extreme ideology.

More than 80 years ago, President Howard Taft said, "Presidents come and go, but the Supreme Court goes on forever."

Congress, however, does not. Every two years, we have a chance to make a change. In November, we must put the breaks on Trump's determination to weaken our country's democracy. Our only hope is to change the Senate and House.

"This is a moment that calls on all of us to stand up," said Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL). "We have to win back the House (and Senate). There isn't any other way to right the wrongs."

Elections matter. Elections have consequences.

President Trump campaigned on the promise to nominate anti-choice justices to the Supreme Court, and now is his chance. He holds the balance of the Court in his hands.
  • The courts are our last line of defense
  • The Supreme Court is the ultimate backstop against policies that restrict reproductive rights
  • Trump has promised to overturn Roe v Wade and HE COULD DO IT
  • Marriage equality, and much more are also at risk
Senators MUST vote for judicial nominees who protect reproductive rights, not attack them. Tell your Senators to vote NO on any nominee who will not protect our rights.

ISRAEL
Rival Palestinian Leaderships Divided over Gaza-Cyprus Port Proposal
The rival Palestinian leaderships in the West Bank and Gaza Strip reacted in contradictory fashion to a reported Israeli offer geared towards alleviating the humanitarian plight in the Hamas-ruled enclave. According to an Israeli television report, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has advanced a proposal to build a port in Cyprus that would serve as a hub for the transfer of goods to blockaded Gaza. The plan is contingent on Gaza's Islamist rulers returning to Israel the bodies of two soldiers killed during the 2014 war, in addition to three living Israelis being held captive by Hamas.
Israel Transferred Aid to Syrians Seeking Refuge Near Border in Overnight Mission

Army says it provided tons of food, medicine and clothing to Syrians living in makeshift encampments on Golan border, but says will not allow them entry to Israel. Over 300 tents, 13 tons of food, 15 tons of baby formula and three large shipments of medical equipment and clothing had been delivered, according to the IDF.

The United Kingdom Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) announced that their organization succeeded in stopping the Defense for Children International Palestine (DCI-P) - a NGO accused of close links to a Palestinian terrorism entity from receiving donations by bank transfers from Citibank and Arab Bank PLC. The U.S., the E.U. and Israel have classified the PFLP as a terrorist organization.

There was a precipitous 77% increase in the dissemination of white supremacist propaganda on US college campuses this year, according to new data published by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL's Center on Extremism found 292 cases of white supremacist propaganda on campuses during the 2017-2018 academic year, compared to 165 the previous year. NC Republicans Withdraw Support for Candidate Who Wrote Jews Are 'the Children of Satan'

The North Carolina Republican Party withdrew its support for a candidate for the state's General Assembly over his racist and anti-Semitic statements. Russell Walker, 75, won the Republican primary in May for the General Assembly seat in District 48. "The North Carolina Republican House Caucus and our members will not support Mr. Walker's campaign given his comments and actions," Rep. John Szoka, the conference chairman of the caucus said in a statement.
CHOICE
Supreme Court Ruling May Pave Way for More Faith-Based Pregnancy Centers

The Supreme Court's ruling in favor of anti-abortion clinics in California will make it easier for similar facilities in other states to dissuade women from getting abortions. The court ruled 5-4 that a California law requiring clinics known as "crisis pregnancy centers" to inform women about how to receive low-cost abortions from the state likely violates the First Amendment.
A Post-Roe World Would Pave the Way for a New Black Market in Abortion Pills

The availability of easy-to-administer abortion-inducing pills and the impossibility of stopping their flow from foreign pharmacies would create a situation unlike in previous eras when it was difficult or illegal to terminate pregnancies. Many states already have criminal laws against illegally induced abortions, and women have been prosecuted under these (and anti-fetacide laws) for illegally obtaining and taking pills to induce abortion.
'No Doubt' Abortion Will Be Illegal in 20 States in 18 Months

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin had a grim response Wednesday to the news that Justice Anthony Kennedy will be retiring this summer: " Roe v. Wade is doomed." "You are going to see 20 states pass laws banning abortion outright. Just banning abortion. Because they know that there are now going to be five votes on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade."

Faith-Based Groups Turn up the Heat on ICE

Even before the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy led to the forced separation of immigrant parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, religious groups cast a jaundiced eye on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

BEYOND THE CORE
"Speechless": Capital Gazette Opinion Page Left Blank After Deadly Shooting

The grieving and the reporting jumbled together for staffers at The Capital Gazette after a fatal shooting at the newspaper, but they were determined to put out the next day's edition. While the front page described the mass shooting in horrific detail, the opinion page offered a starker approach. "Today, we are speechless," the editors wrote. "This page is intentionally left blank today to commemorate victims of Thursday's shootings at our office."
Corporate America Takes Stand on Gun Control

In the wake of high-profile mass shootings, corporate America has been taking a stand against the firearms industry amid a lack of action by lawmakers on gun control. Payment processing firms are limiting transactions, Bank of America stopped providing financing to companies that make AR-style guns, and retailers like Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods imposed age restrictions on gun purchases.
A Huge Stretch of the Arctic Ocean Is Rapidly Turning into the Atlantic. That's Not a Good Sign.

Scientists studying one of the fastest-warming regions of the global ocean say changes in this region are so sudden and vast that in effect, it will soon be another limb of the Atlantic Ocean, rather than a characteristically icy Arctic sea.
COURT WATCH
It's Not Just Abortion: 5 Issues Likely to Be Affected by Kennedy's Exit

When it comes to issues like abortion and affirmative action, it has seemed for years that Justice Anthony Kennedy was holding back the tide. Now, his retirement may unleash a crashing wave. The departure of the relatively moderate Kennedy from an ideologically polarized court has the potential to upend legal precedent on a slew of hot-button issues, but the most significant impact is likely on abortion rights, where Kennedy stood squarely with the court's liberals to defend Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that upheld a woman's right to choose.
Kennedy Exit Gives Trump Chance to Reshape Court for Decades

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement on Wednesday, handing President Trump and the GOP Senate an opportunity to shift the nation's high court to the right for decades.
Who's on President Trump's List to Replace Justice Kennedy?

The White House has previously circulated names of potential successors. "It will be somebody from that list," President Trump said in remarks at the White House Wednesday afternoon. "We have now boiled it down to about 25 people."
John Roberts Will Probably Be the Supreme Court's Next Swing Justice

Chief Justice John Roberts will be the court's new median justice. With a second Supreme Court vacancy in hand and two liberal justices in or approaching their 80s still on the bench, Trump appears poised to exert as much influence on the court as Richard Nixon, who appointed four justices in the space of three years. So if Roberts becomes the median justice next term and Trump gets another chance to expand the court's right wing, Roberts might not stay in the middle for long.

Where Is Barack Obama?

Barack Obama was six months into his post-White House life when Donald Trump found a new way to grab his attention. It was a Tuesday morning deep in the mid-Atlantic summer, and, feeling a world away from the Pennsylvania Avenue grind, the former president was reading the New York Times on his iPad.

Senator Blasts Administration for 'Cruelty and Incompetence' After Immigration Briefing

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) knocked the Trump administration's effort to reunite migrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border following a closed-door briefing with senators this week. "It was clear from my meeting yesterday that the Administration is working harder to stop the court-ordered reunification of these families than returning the kids. In the well-worn words of President Trump: sad," Durbin said in a tweet .
