New Major in Statistics

Are you interested in the exciting world of data science? The discipline of statistics underlies many of the biggest successes in data science and is one of the fasting growing professions in the U.S. The Department of Statistics has launched a newly approved undergraduate major in statistics. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for jobs in many industries immediately upon graduation and for graduate-level education. These industries include business, education, entertainment, finance, government, insurance, manufacturing, marketing, medicine and pharmaceuticals. In addition, the department is revamping its minor program, which is a great add-on to many majors. Dr. Jennifer Cheavens, Department of Psychology

Dr. Jennifer Cheavens, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, is a recipient of the University's highest recognition for teaching excellence, the Ohio State Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.  Among her many activities, a course she developed, Positive Psychology (PSYCH 2303), has gained popularity given its relevance  to students' lives.  Topics include compassion, humor, spirituality, optimism and emotional intelligence.  Dr. Cheavens also advises the Positive Psychology Club and is the faculty advisor for the Mood and Personality Studies (MAPS) Lab.  Read more about Dr. Cheavens, her research and her advice for students.

Education Abroad Program Spotlight

Impact of HIV: Tanzania

This program is an interdisciplinary exploration of the real world impact of-and response to-HIV/AIDS. Aimed at students in the sciences and the humanities, it combines academic and experiential learning in Tanzania to introduce students to fundamental history and microbiology concepts as they relate to the local HIV epidemic. Tanzania has suffered disproportionately from HIV, but has also taken important steps to address the epidemic. Over four weeks, students will study the language (Swahili), history, and culture of East Africa, all in the context of the public health response to HIV.  To learn more about the program, who the instructors are and costs, click here.  Attend an information session on October 4 or November 8 from 6 - 7 p.m. in Room 100, Enarson Hall.

A new event, the Buck Tank, will take place during the 2018 Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival.  The Buck Tank is designed to encourage students who are new to research to develop an idea for a research project that relates to the Columbus community.  Read more.

The Big Ten Voting Challenge is a friendly competition between conference rivals to promote civic engagement. The goal is to be the Big Ten school with the highest student voter turnout and trophies will be awarded to the best performing campuses. Viewing of Dark Money

Dark Money, a Sundance award-winning documentary, examines one of the greatest present threats to American democracy: the influence of untraceable corporate money on our elections and elected officials. The film takes viewers to Montana-a frontline in the fight to preserve fair elections nationwide-to follow an intrepid local journalist working to expose the real-life impacts of the US Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Presented by the Center for Ethics and Human Values.  Following the screening the film's director/producer, Kimberly Reed, will engage in a discussion with the audience. Free Safety App for Ohio State Community

Ohio State's Department of Public Safety is offering a free safety app.   Rave Guardian offers many benefits, including faster delivery of Buckeye Alerts and safety notices via push notifications.  Like the Ohio State app, safety notices can be received within seconds when push notifications are turned on.  You can also select friends or family as a virtual guardian to follow you via GPS tracking as you travel on and around campus.  The virtual guardian is shown a timer based on your destination.  If time expires, your virtual guardian will be alerted and encouraged to make appropriate follow-up.  The app is available to download if signed up for Buckeye Alerts.  Download by searching for "Rave Guardian" inside the Ohio State app.  Learn more.
