Arts Access
Grant Recipients
Awarded in Region 2
On September 17, 2018, the Region 2 Arts Council Board of Directors granted $63,677 in Arts and Cultural Heritage funds to arts organizations, groups with a fiscal sponsor, schools and non-profit institutions and organizations for the creation and production of arts activity that would benefit community members residing in our five-county region.
Watermark Art Center
received $3,876 to support the 14th Annual "It's Only Clay" National Juried Ceramics Competition and Exhibit during the months of October and November 2018.
Bagley Area Arts Collaborative
received $4,764 for "Arts Unlimited," a series of art workshops for 2019.
Bemidji Symphony Orchestra
received $6,000 to produce "Lincoln Portrait" and a concert for children featuring Sarah and Sadie Hamrin performing Mozart's Sinfonia concertante with Dr. Beverly Everett conducting.
Bemidji Sculpture Walk
received $5,800 for the Bemidji Sculpture Walk 20th Anniversary Festival
with sculptor demos, living sculptures & music in spring 2019.
Bemidji Contra Dance
received $6,000
to continue building the local contra dance musician and dancer community through workshops and monthly dances from Nov - May welcoming people of all ages, abilities and incomes.
Clearbrook-Gonvick Community Education
received $796 to assist Clearbrook-Gonvick Community Ed in sponsoring the play Cinderella for local performers age 7-adult as part of their Summer Recreation program.
Red Lake Middle School
received $6,000 for artists-in-residence Lady Midnight and Garlic Brown to work with 7th grade students to write lyrics and music for a video showcasing Red Lake Native American talent and culture.
Northwest Indian Community Development Center
received $4,770 for their "Seasonal Pathway of a Deer Hide" Workshop Series including how a deer hide is traditionally processed and utilized for producing tobacco pouches, moccasins, rattles, and medicine bags.
Paul Bunyan Playhouse
received $6,000 to produce "Driving Miss Daisy"
during their summer 2019 season supporting the Playhouse in offering diverse roles and themes for actors and audiences in the northern Minnesota region.
Lake of the Woods School
received $1,781 for "Pottery Possibilities" with artist-in- residence Janet Johnson to teach wheel throwing and hand building techniques to 7-12 grade students during the day and to community members in the evenings.
Lake of the Woods School
received $6,000 for a 2-day educational and performance residency with Copper Street Brass.
Bemidji State University Center for Extended Learning
received $6,000 to bring poet and writer Terrance Hayes as the Distinguished Visiting Writer to the the Minnesota Northwoods Writers Conference in June 2019.
Bemidji Community Theater received $5,890 to produce the children's musical The Reluctant Dragon in March of 2019.

Seeking One Board Member
from Mahnomen County!
Region 2 Arts Council is still seeking to fill one more Board of Directors position for an arts appreciator and/or artist from Mahnomen county. This position will begin as soon as filled. Eligible applicants must be 18 years or older, have a strong interest in the arts, and have the desire to be an ambassador for Region 2 Arts Council.
This is a great opportunity to understand the workings of the arts granting process, to be more involved with the arts and artists of our region, and to enjoy camaraderie with others who appreciate the arts.

I was a representative for four years. I learned a lot about areas of art that I was not as familiar with, also sharing what I know with others. I met interesting people and interesting ideas. Taking my turn evaluating granted arts projects led me to events I might have otherwise passed by, sometimes enriching my life in surprising ways.

Region 2 Arts Council covers round trip mileage at the current IRS rate for attending board activities. Time commitment involves board meetings, committee work, and 5-8 hours per month reviewing grant applications, along with attending selected funded arts events. Summers are relatively free of board obligations.

Keeping Traditions Alive!

This exhibit showcases
Norwegian rosemaling and Swedish kurbits
by artists Lara Dybing and Marti Lundin. Both have studied painting at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum and Heritage Center in Decorah IA, North House Folk School in Grand Marais MN, and Concordia Language Villages.
Exhibit runs through November 1st and can be viewed any day the church is open before 4:30pm.

BCT needs to move all their Costume/Prop items to their new home and need all the help they can get.
If you can help, even for a few hours, we will start at 10:00 at the new building (316 Beltrami) and divide up crews and vehicles to haul items to their new home. Muscles and energy will be appreciated.
Bemidji Community Theater will be offering this workshop with puppeteer Karl Warnke, the designer of the fire lizards for Dragonsong. The fire lizards will be "resurrected" and repaired in order to become ambassadors for BCT.

Unique Traveling Exhibit
Now Available!
The prose poetry collection ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN will tour Minnesota through the winter of 2018-19. This exhibit is an introduction to the unique world of prose poetry through the Everyday Absurdist writings of Dag T. Straumsvåg of Trondheim, Norway
Any Minnesota museum, theater, library, or public space may schedule this exhibit for a 30 to 60 day winter showing at no cost.

Program
The Communities Thrive Program is a "deep dive" in a small number of communities to help them capitalize on the current "Brain Gain" trend in the ways that best fit their unique community, ultimately building on the strengths and diversity within our region. This program uses place making and planning approaches to support community vitality.
We are able to provide the following tools and resources as part of the Communities Thrive Program. We expect to work with a community for up to two (2) to three (3) years, as this work takes time and persistence to see it to full impact.

Mary Therese

Watermark Art Center
In the summer of 2017, Region 2 Arts Council Artist Fellow Mary Therese traveled to Kenya with Bemidji State University Professor of Geography, Mark Lawrence, and Adjunct Instructor in Photography and Photojournalism, Monika Lawrence. This journey was the fulfillment of Mary Therese's lifelong dream of traveling to Africa to witness the elephants and other great spirits in the wild.
This collaborative show is an outcome of that journey, reflecting the memories Mary Therese and Monika shared from their time together experiencing the rich culture of the Ukambani region.
Therese's silk paintings are batiks, created by stretching fabric, drawing with brushes, and using tjantinga to apply dyes and hot bees wax, which is first used as a resist then removed from the fabric before the dyes are permanently set by a steaming process. Lawrence's work is comprised of black and white digital photographs, depicting wildlife and landscapes from the Ukambani Region in southern Kenya.
The exhibit runs through December 29.

Congratulations to the Watermark Art Center!
Watermark Art Center recently received two grants: A $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant to support visual art exhibitions and accompanying educational programming; and a $25,000 grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in support of the art center's recent expansion and relocation project, which includes the new Miikanan Gallery, a space dedicated exclusively to featuring Indigenous artwork and programming.
Of the SMSC grant, Watermark Executive Director Lori Forshee-Donnay stated, "We are so pleased to receive this gift. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community's support of this project honors Indigenous artists and their work, placing it in the forefront of art and commerce in northern Minnesota."
The National Endowment for the Arts Grant was awarded through NEA's Challenge America program, which supports small and mid-sized organizations that bring arts access to underserved populations. NEA Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter noted,
"The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to ensuring all Americans have access to the arts, whether they are in a small or large, rural or urban area. We are proud to support organizations such as Watermark Art Center that are providing opportunities for more people to experience and engage in the arts in their communities."

Congratulations to the Bemidji Community Theater on the purchase of their new home
located in the former Book World on Beltrami Avenue in Bemidji.
Here are just a few reasons why a new space is such great news:
- It allows BCT to consolidate all of its props, costumes, rehearsal and storage into one space.
- It provides room to grow and the capacity to expand programming to involve even more community members.
- It will enhance the vitality of the downtown business by creating a theater district, which includes the Historic Chief Theater, where BCT will continue to stage its plays and musicals.
