NAPE news
Dear Equity Leaders,

As you probably know, there was movement on Perkins reauthorization this past week. On June 26, the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions marked up Perkins. Chairman Alexander (R-TN) offered a Bipartisan Chairmans Amendment drafted with Ranking Member Murray (D-WA) and Senators Enzi (R-WY) and Casey (D-PA). The amendment passed unanimously on a voice vote. No date has been set for action by the full US Senate. The markup can be watched at Perkins CTE Markup and the full bill is available here.

NAPE applauds the HELP Committee for building on current law by continuing to include provisions that support access and success of special populations in high-quality CTE programs of study at the secondary and postsecondary levels. The bill, while not perfect, maintains the spirit of accountability through a thoughtful state and local planning and reporting process that uses disaggregated data, performance gap analyses, and a local needs assessment to determine the most effective use of funds. Sincerely,

Mimi

The US Gender Gap in Math Is Starkest in the Richest, Whitest School Districts
Jenny Anderson, Quartz
Very privileged parents often talk a big egalitarian game while exhibiting some pretty traditional roles, with dad working while mom stays home. New research shows that in the places where these families cluster-in wealthier, whiter school districts, where men earn more than women, have higher levels of education, and are more likely to work in business or science-boys outperform girls in math by a larger margin than in other communities.
