October has arrived with darkening days and the first rain of the season. As the month turns, we transition from our worship theme of Welcome to exploring what it means to be a people of Vision. This month I will be asking you about your visions for the future of the congregation and our wider community. What creates a compelling vision that inspires us to engagement? What limitations on our vision have we inherited, or do we impose on ourselves?
This month the Board will appoint a Task Force to design and facilitate a process to renew our collective sense of Mission. This is a first step in service of one of the five developmental goals that my ministry with you is rooted in. I hope that our conversations about vision this month will be just the starting point as we work together to name what is most essential and of ultimate value about this community.
Perhaps it might be time for a parallel process in your personal life. What is the burning ember of your own personal mission? What vision lifts your gaze from day to day life and reminds you of some greater purpose?
In our personal lives and in our communal life together, vision is not something we must conjure out of the air. Instead, in this season of the harvest, may we remember that our deepest visions grow from seeds that were planted long ago. Our work to plant for the future begins in reaching down into the strong roots and rich soil already beneath us.

Our Whole Lives Information Meeting:
Have you ever wanted to know more about our UUA curriculum on human sexuality and relationships? We will cover the philosophy and a little about each level of the curriculum from K1 to Adult. This award-winning curriculum was designed by both the Unitarian Universalist Assn. and the United Church of Christ.
We will meet in the Wright Room downstairs from noon - 1 pm.
In a brief report back from the Pot of Gold seminar in Sacramento we heard from Katherine DaSilva Jain, Luka Coole, and me about the main points of the theme speaker and a few of the workshop offerings. Confirmed that families are busy and need help. Children and youth programming need rethinking to support the needs of the family as a unit. Many experiments are happening all across the country and the UUA has many good suggestions. I expect we will be trying more of our own experiments as the year rolls through. Stay tuned. Let's keep it fresh.
Kids learning with Kiva:
Our Creative Compassionates class raised over $400 last year and are now learning about the power of microlending. As an example of following through on the Fair Trade chocolate theme, one group loaned to is this farmer-owned cooperative in Peru -

Gleaning at Green Gulch to help feed those in need. Oct 7th is the annual Marin Interfaith Council's youth and family gleaning day at Green Gulch. Carpool from the UUCM parking lot after the service with a sack lunch or meet the group for a 1:30 start time at Green Gulch Zen Center. RSVP preferred to Jef by Saturday noon. I will send a courtesy headcount to the event organizer.
A big thanks to Jerry Moore who came and organized an ad hoc musical ensemble with seven kids and six teachers and parents. We made a glorious noise with so much fun happening that most of the kids didn't want to break for a snack. Impressive!

My general work hours: Mondays and Tuesdays are my days off. I have office hours at UUCM Wed and Thursday 10:30-2pm as well as Sunday 9AM-1pm. Friday and Saturday I work from home. Email, phone, and text are all fine forms of communication to use.

Saturday, October 6, 2018, 5:00-9:00 p.m. Admission is free, with a potluck dinner, no-host bar, and live music by Milton Wong and Christine Kraemer. COME EARLY to enjoy some wine and begin bidding. Silent auction tables will open at 5:00 p.m. and will close at 15-minute intervals between 6:15 and 7:00 p.m., so results can be tabulated by the end of the evening. UU Marin Board Matters

With our new minister, we are discussing mutual Developmental Goal Benchmarks for the first year - mission, engagement, planning, finances, narrative. Dear UUCM Congregation, there are several items and special services needed by our Wee Ones that you may be able to help with. 1) A good player for our CDs 2) A good player for our cassette tapes 3) Talent & desire to create doll clothing for some of the several dolls we have that we may be willing to share and to give to those less fortunate for the holidays--these items could be sewn, knitted, or crocheted 4) Small, excellent quality Beatrix Potter books for keeping in our classroom. We will have a free CPR training for the congregation on Sunday Oct. 7th following the service. This will be a short class introducing the new defibrillator that was donated to UUCM. This is basic information that can save a person's life.
The class will be led by Walter Littrell, who had his life saved by a defibrillator during a heart attack twenty three years ago. All guests are welcome along with members of the congregation to learn this simple life-saving technique. BE WELL!

Writing to Find the Voice Inside on October 13th
Join the new writing group sponsored by Adult Ed and led by Kat Braeman to write for ten minutes on a topic from Gail Collins-Ranadive's book,
Finding the Voice Inside
.
Writing can be a spiritual quest. The topic might be a simple introduction of what we want others to know about ourselves, or an opportunity to reconsider who we really are. Or we might want to reflect on a childhood ritual or recount a family story. We can explore how we receive affirmation or reframe our life stories. After we write for ten minutes, we will each read what we wrote and share our stories with the others in the group. It is a very simple process but magic can evolve. This group will meet once a month from 10 to 12 noon and will begin on Saturday, October 13. Next dates: 11/10, 12/8.

Remarkable People - October 19
|

Please save the dates of October 19 and November 16 for the "Remarkable People"
biography program. Facilitated by Nani Ranken, these Friday evenings consist of two UUCM members telling their life story and answering questions. It is spellbinding to hear people talk about the circumstances and choices in their life, and there is no better way to get to know other UUCM folks.
October 19 from 7-8:30pm in the Fireside Room. Amanda Morando and Earl Owen will be the speakers.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on March 23, 1929, Earle received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba. He came to the US and eventually to California, where he taught at the University of California, Davis for most of his working life. He and his wife joined the Unitarian Fellowship and participated in the establishment of the current church." If you want to know more, come to the October Remarkable People session!
Earle will be joined by our beloved choir director Amanda Morando. What a duet of life stories to look forward to!

The UUCM Classic Book Club will have its first meeting in the
Clara Barton room, 1:30-3:00pm, on Wednesday, October 24.
Then it will skip November and December.
Thereafter it will meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month starting January 23, 2019 and and ending May 22, 2019.
The first book is Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.
