April 2018  

April may have just arrived, but here in Kentucky we have already had our share of spring showers; and while we are certainly sick of the rain, we are happily looking forward to the flood of activity ahead this spring and summer! We have started compiling our annual directory and firm profile, so be on the lookout for our survey to confirm or update your contact info and be sure to reply by April 30. In addition, please keep our annual design and service awards on your radar and watch for the call for nominations in early summer.
 
With preparations underway for these things, we are also busily planning for the 2018 AIA KY/IN Convention, which will be held in conjunction with the Exhibit Columbus Symposium in Columbus, IN this September 27-29. This new twist on our annual conference will be full of exciting programs and tours, so mark your calendars now. Until then, there is plenty for everyone to stay involved in, so keep reading to find out all that's been happening!

Update Your Info!

It's time to update your contact info for AIA Kentucky's annual membership directory. You should have received an email requesting that you complete these updates by Monday, April 30. If you haven't already, please take five minutes to complete the four questions in our survey so that your info will be listed correctly in this year's publication.

The Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College
Pick a Role / Play a Part 

Centre College will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2019 and, as part of their campus-wide celebration, is exploring the possibility of an Exhibition & Seminar on Frank Lloyd Wright and William Wesley Peters, to be held at the Norton Center for the Arts. AIA Kentucky member, Joe Jones, AIA is seeking individuals who would be interested in assisting with the planning efforts for this exciting event. If you would like to contribute to these efforts, email Joe to learn more.
 
AIA Kentucky is also seeking individuals to fill a few key roles as state-level coordinators and liaisons with the Institute. Please contact Kelly Ives, AIA if you are interested in any of the following:

Make an Impact with the KSA PAC

The Kentucky Society of Architects Political Action Committee has issued a $2,500 challenge. If 8 donations of $250 are received, Executive Vice President Janet Pike, Hon. AIA and lobbyist Greg Brotzge, Hon. AIA will each make a $250 matching donation. The PAC's overall goal for 2018 is $10,000 and we can get there with your help!

Better PR for Your Projects

One of the biggest pet peeves of architects is that they (almost) never get credited in news articles. Here are a couple of steps that architects can take to help avoid this oversight:
  • Be sure to include your logo / firm name in a prominent location on any architectural graphic you provide to the media / client.
  • Be the facilitator in setting up an interview between your client and the media. Invite media to tour the project before it opens, along with the client. Thus, you are included in the interview and most likely will be quoted.

AIA Kentucky extends condolences to family, colleagues and friends of Edward L. Cooke, III, AIA Emeritus, who passed away on March 29th at the age of 91.  He was president of the firm Ryan, Cooke and Zuern Architects in Louisville before his retirement, and his work was recognized with several Kentucky Society of Architects (now AIA Kentucky) design awards as well as preservation awards from Preservation Alliance.  He was president of the AIA Central Kentucky Chapter in 1970 and 1971 and AIA Kentucky in 1973.

Firm News
TEG Architects  is honored to announce that  Joel Wallace, AIA  has been elevated to partner of the firm. This elevation, the third in the firm's history, enables generational leadership and continuity in the firm's approach to service, quality and creativity.

Omni Architects is pleased to announce the addition of two new design team members:
  • Libby Lamb received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Design, Art, Architecture, & Planning (DAAP), and a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology from Tennessee Tech University.
  • Shelby Hilliard received a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience, with a minor in Studio Art, from Centre College. She then received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Kentucky, where she is currently finalizing her Masters of Architecture.
Libby and Shelby are presently members of Omni's design teams for the UK Chemistry-Physics Building Renovation and the JCTC - Advanced Manufacturing & Information Technology Center.

NKY News

AIA Northern Kentucky was a proud partner of the 2018 NKY Restoration Weekend on March 9. This seventh annual event was awarded one of fourteen grants (totaling $83,141) by the Kentucky Heritage Council's Certified Local Government Program to projects making an impact toward achieving historic preservation in their communities. Eight other communities were also selected as recipients for the 2017-18 cycle. Read More

Seeking AXP  Participants
AIA Kentucky is helping our Central Kentucky and East Kentucky chapters to compile a list of contact info for local participants in NCARB's Architectural Experience Program. This is in effort to assist with outreach for local chapter programs that are designed to assist in this stage of the emerging professional's career. Both AIA members, and non-members will be invited to participate so please spread the word to your friends and colleagues and ask any who are interested to contact Kelly Ives, AIA for additional info. 

Upcoming ARE Workshops
We have opened our 'Sights on Success' program workshops for "à la carte" registration to all ARE candidates in Kentucky. These group study sessions include opportunities for Q&A with recent licensees and material presented by subject-matter experts on topics such as Mechanical and Electrical systems.

Two workshops remain in April and May, in preparation for the Project Planning & Design and Project Design & Development exams. Individuals may sign up for one, or both of these sessions. We hope you will join us in taking your next steps toward licensure!  Info & Registration

The School of Architecture at the College of Design presents The Making of an Avant-Garde: The Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies 1967-1984. The film and Q&A with director Diana Agrest will take place Monday, April 9 from 5-7 p.m. at Woodward Hall in the Gatton College of Business.
 
Studio Louisville in the College of Design will have their End of Year Show May 2 at EOP in Louisville.
 
The College of Design End of Year Show will be May 4 from 5-7 p.m. in Pence Hall.

The Last Word

Where did a fourth of the year go?  The first quarter of 2018 has been extremely busy here at AIA Kentucky, with a lot of important activity in the Kentucky Legislature, preparations for an unconventional convention experience in Columbus, Indiana in September, ongoing ARE prep sessions, more QBS coalition activities, two successful CE programs (Solar Design and Project Management Bootcamp), along with all the things we take care of every day to keep your profession and your AIA strong!
 
Put Thursday, October 18th on your calendar for an exciting new approach to celebrating our 2018 Design Awards and Special Awards.  Because of the content-rich, multi-faceted convention event in Columbus, we will not be presenting this year's awards during the convention.  Instead, we'll be hosting an Awards Celebration on Thursday, October 18 at Limestone Hall in Lexington, which is the new event space located in the rotunda of the historic, recently restored Fayette County Courthouse.  Preliminary plans call for some inspirational design-oriented programming (lectures or workshop, TBD) in the afternoon, a cocktail reception and an awards presentation ceremony in the early evening.  In light of this, we're slightly revising our traditional awards submission schedule as well.  Watch for Calls for Entries/Nominations, coming soon.
 
I don't know about you, but I'm ready for Spring! Here's to warmer days and sunnier skies.
