Old Woodward Reconstruction Project Update 6/29/18

The Old Woodward Reconstruction Project is wrapping up another week as contractors put the finishing touches on the installation of the new, concrete roadway throughout the construction zone. With the touch up work now completed, the new, concrete roadway on Old Woodward and Maple is now in place!

On the south end of the project (south Old Woodward), it is anticipated that eastbound Brown at the Old Woodward intersection could reopen to through traffic on Monday (7-2-18). Weather permitting, crews will work this weekend to install the asphalt transitions which would enable eastbound Brown to be re-opened on Monday. An update message will be sent once the go-ahead is given that eastbound Brown at Old Woodward is re-opening.

Following up on last week's notice regarding sidewalk work, the recent spate of inclement weather necessitated an adjustment to the work schedule. As a result, the sectional sidewalk work that requires temporarily closing access to front doors is now anticipated to be done on the week of July 9th. The City thanks you for your patience and understanding as it moves to complete this necessary work as fast as possible.

Finally, the other highlight this week is the start of the construction of the ornate planter boxes. The sophisticated planter will hold the new trees which will be enriched by the organic, structural soil underground, allowing for faster growth of the new trees. The planter boxes are one of many above ground enhancements that will transform the look of downtown Birmingham for decades to come.

With a targeted completion date of early August, the underground infrastructure improvements and the above ground enhancements on Old Woodward will result in a modernized downtown core that City residents, merchants, stakeholders and visitors will be proud of and enjoy for decades to come. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to visit downtown and see the transformation first-hand while supporting city merchants. As a reminder, free parking in all City parking structures is now available on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) along with four, two-hour free valet parking stands strategically located near the construction zone.
