Best Practices for Family Involvement & Dealing with Dynamics

An overview of powerful communication, with a special emphasis on implementing skills to provide a more effective way to communicate and meet psychosocial needs of potential residents’ family members. Attendees will learn ways to find the best solution for each customer quickly, correctly and with a helpful attitude.

Creating a Community prepared to serve LGBT Older Adults

(2 hrs) Meets Subject Code 04 - Psych/social needs RCFE# 433-0214-28150 ARF# 433-0214-28149

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview and understanding of the culture of seniors who self-identify as LGBT. This course will focus on learning how to provide quality care to this group of individuals, focusing on creating a diverse, openly welcome, and empathic residential care community. At the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with the necessary skills to care for and support the needs of these individuals and their families.

Why Oral Health

(2 Hours) Meets Subject Code 06 - Physical Needs RCFE# 433-0206-28318 ARF# 433-0206-28317

Assistance with daily oral hygiene is often needed for adults who have loss of strength, mobility or dexterity or have experienced conditions such as a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s.  Instructor will provide information on how to maintain a daily oral hygiene regimen for residents and older adults, including those with dentures.

Providing Incontinence Care for Your Residents

(3 Hours) Meets Subject Code 06 Physical Needs RCFE# 433-0306-28346 ARF# 433-0306-28345 Instructor will review the different types of incontinence and how to provide proper care for those residents suffering from incontinence issues. People of all ages can suffer from incontinence, but the majority of those who suffer from this condition is over the age of sixty. Incontinence affects both men and women, but the underlying causes are quite different. It is also much more commonly found in women than it is in men. If not too severe, incontinence can be easily managed with the right products.

Day Two- Saturday, June 29, 2019

Living Beyond Dementia

(4 hrs) Meets Subject Code 11 -Alzheimer/ Dementia RCFE# 433-0411-27502 ARF# 433-0411-27617

Instructor will discuss how Dementia is not a specific disease.  It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Understand and define the diagnosis of dementia. Learn about the different types of dementia and causes of reversible dementia and irreversible dementia. Learn medical and non-medical interventions to aid in the care of individuals diagnosed with dementia. Discuss the risks and benefits of current medications used to treat the behaviors associated with dementia. Understand the importance of empathic communication.

 Coping with Grief and Loss as a Professional

(2 hrs) Meets Subject Code 05 – Community & support services   i.e., meals on wheels, support & services RCFE# 433-0205-29832 ARF#433-0205-29831

Loss of functional abilities and death of residents are part of working in adult and elderly residential care. Attendees will learn the definition and stages of grief as well as to recognize its various manifestations.  Appropriate behaviors and boundaries for staff interactions with grieving families and residents will be reviewed.  Ideas and tools for managing and supporting grief among staff will also be reviewed.  A group discussion will be held to share challenges and best practices to support staff in understanding their feelings while having a sustainable career in their field.

Destination Regulation

(4 hrs) Meets Subject Code 01 – Laws, regulations, policies and procedures RCFE#433-0401-28583 ARF#433-0401-28582

Compliance is not a bad word. This course will review ways administrators can stay on top of what’s new in regulations while meeting the demands of residents and families. Review of important each administrator should have implemented and new California administrator laws impacting operations. A group discussion will be held on best practices to ensure compliance and administrator experiences in what happens in non-compliance status.
