Hello!

With the end of June comes the beginning of summer and a much-deserved break from school for our youngsters.

My staff and I have been busy working on all things Lee District, a number of which are highlighted below.

Thanks for reading. Stay cool and have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Summer Activities
The last school bell has rung in our Fairfax County Public Schools until the fall and if you're anything like me, you're looking for fun recreational activities to do with your family.

Great news - you don't have to look any further!

Lee District is home to a number of fantastic parks, all of which are great for singles and families of all ages and abilities. They're the perfect stop for summer and make for a great way to spend the day outside and interact with nature and the environment around us.

Ever since I was first elected Lee District Supervisor in 2007, I've been working alongside the Park Authority and a number of great community partners such as the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund to ensure our great recreational amenities were accessible to people of all ages and all abilities.

By now you've no doubt heard about the Our Special Harbor Sprayground at Lee District Park, an award-winning, fully-accessible Chesapeake Bay themed water park. What you may not know, however, is that the sprayground is not the only all-accessible feature at the park.

Just last month, we completed a decades-worth of work on the Family Recreation Area at Lee District Park by cutting the ribbon on Chessie's Trail, a 2,160-foot path for people of all abilities. That trail joins the sprayground, tree house, carousel, and playground as the park's all-accessible amenities. Located at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Rose Hill Drive, Lee District Park is a crowd-pleaser for the whole family.

Looking for a good nature trail or some wildlife? We've got you covered there, too.

Huntley Meadows Park is home hundreds of different kinds of native plants and wildlife. The 1,000-plus acre park also features more than 10 miles of trails, including a boardwalk through a section of wetlands that is great for spotting animals.

Not far from Huntley Meadows sits Lake Accotink Park. This 493-acre park also has many trails and features waterfront activities such as boating, kayaking, and canoeing. As you may have read in a prior newsletter from me, we're currently planning the long-term future of the lake. This will ensure the preservation of it for years to come.

Lee District, Huntley Meadows, and Lake Accotink Parks are but three of many great parks in our community. I would encourage you to stop by all of them, plus many of our great community parks, each different in its own way. I can assure you that you won't be disappointed!

Happy exploring.
Embark Wins Big
Our massive, four-year planning effort known as Embark Richmond Highway just won the 2018 Commonwealth Plan of the Year Award from the American Planning Association's Virginia Chapter.

This is a tremendous testament to the great work by our County staff and community who helped create this plan.

Embark is a sweeping new land-use plan that supports walking, biking and a bus rapid transit system on Richmond Highway in the short-term and an extension of Metro's Yellow Line in the long-term. There will also be a number of new parks and environmental features.
Becoming One Fairfax
Earlier this month, I joined community leaders and other elected officials in Gum Springs, our county's oldest African American community, for a conversation called "Becoming One Fairfax: Envisioning a Racially Equitable Fairfax County."

Late last year, the Board of Supervisors and School Board adopted a resolution called One Fairfax, which directs the development of a racial and social equity policy to ensure all individuals in Fairfax have an opportunity to reach their highest level of personal achievement. This policy was created by a committee I serve on, the Successful Children and Youth Policy Team. This is a moral and economic issue where we can ensure equity is examined as a part of every decision the County makes. This discussion was a critical step forward.

I'm so proud of our staff and our community for helping us implement this important resolution and our work every day to identify and overcome barriers to racial and social equity.
Interested in Serving?
Local government is the form of government closest to the people, and it's the one our residents are most able to influence. One major way of contributing is by volunteering to serve on one of Fairfax County's Boards, Authorities, and Commissions (BACs).
Currently, my office has vacancies on the:
  • Athletic Council
  • Transportation Advisory Commission

Lee District Spotlight:
Lorraine Giovinazzo & Caleb Lester

I'm proud to introduce you to the newest employees here in the Lee District Supervisor's Office: Lorraine Giovinazzo and Caleb Lester.

Lorraine comes to us after 5 years of service as the clerk to the County's Board of Zoning Appeals. She'll be taking over as our office's Communications Director, working on office outreach, event planning, and social media. You can reach her at [email protected].

Caleb also comes to us from a prior County job, this time at the Department of Family Services. Caleb is now Lee District's staff aide handling code compliance, affordable housing, human services, parks, waste management, and consumer affairs. You can reach him at [email protected].

I hope you'll join me in welcoming them to Lee District and our great team!
Did You Know?

Our public safety agencies receive hundreds of calls about fireworks on the Fourth of July. Follow these general guidelines to ensure you have both a fun and safe holiday.
