Happy 4th of July!
ONEgeneration will be closed
on Wednesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Have a Safe & Happy Holiday!
Message from Our President & CEO

"Exciting news! I am very pleased to announce that ONEgeneration was notified by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), their National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), that ONEgeneration has been accredited! We are the only Senior Center in the State of California to have this accreditation.

This arduous almost 12 month process involved compiling supporting documentation related to the National Senior Center Self-Assessment and National Accreditation Manual, an on-site review of documentation and the Center by a certified Peer Reviewer, and a review of the Peer Reviewers’ findings and recommendation by the National Accreditation Board. To advance the quality of senior centers nationwide, NISC developed the program with nine standards of excellence for senior center operations. These standards serve as a guide for all senior centers to improve their operations and position themselves for the future. I congratulate the ONEgeneration staff for this tremendous accomplishment.”

JOY - Joining Old & Young Intergenerational Programming
ONEgeneration is very pleased to announce the expansion of its program offerings with the addition of Grandparents as Parents (GAP). For 31 years, GAP has provided impactful support, services, and advocacy to meet the needs of grandparents (and other relatives) who are raising children at risk. The transition is effective July 1, 2018. GAP services will resume after a short hiatus on July 9, 2018.

“The strategic alignment of our complementary programs, innovative services, and person-centered organizational cultures will bring new synergy to the advancement of our shared goals and “intergenerational missions',” says ONEgeneration CEO, Eva Goetz. “It is a privilege to welcome GAP into the ONEgeneration family of programs and to bring together our combined 70 years of diligent service to our communities’ vulnerable individuals and families.”

“Joining ONEgeneration is a tremendous opportunity to maximize GAP’s financial resources and improve efficiencies,” adds GAP Executive Director, Carmen Garcia Hoffman. “It will strengthen GAP’s community impact by extending geographic reach and access to a greater range of services for the 2,500 families served by GAP each year.”

ONEgeneration is committed to the well-being of our community and the integration of GAP into our family of intergenerational programs.

Our graduating "Tigers & Leopards" Preschool Class of 2018 said goodbye to their senior "neighbors" with a special slideshow presentation highlighting their activities together over the past year.

ONEgeneration preschoolers made Father's Day frames with their senior "neighbors". The rocks on the frame were symbolic of the how a Father can be the "rock" of the family.

Summer is in full swing at the Encino Farmers Market. For those who are barbecuing on the 4 th of July, Autonomy Farms has grass fed beef or natural chicken and of course don’t forget the fresh corn from Underwood Farms . Stop by Valdiva Farms for a great selection of Heirloom Tomatoes for your summer salad, such as Brandywine, Cherokee Chocolate or Black Cherry which are considered the top variety of Heirloom Tomatoes in California. Stone fruit is also now in abundance at the market and G-Farms has an extensive selection. Their nectarines are the best I have tasted this summer.
Also , Underwood Farms Yellow and Red Watermelons are now in season and are the perfect dessert on a hot day!

Hope to see you Sunday at the Onegeneration Encino Farmers Market.

Market Match is available every Sunday for a match up to $10!!

Keeping a loved one with Alzheimer's or another type of dementia safe at home can be much less challenging when following a few basic steps. The tips below will provide some simple ways to secure your home and reduce the risks your loved one faces.

  • Register a Bracelet: The MedicAlert + Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return program is available for individuals with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia who may wander off. You can register an individual online through the Alzheimer’s Association. This is a 24-hour emergency response service, and annual renewal is $35.
  • Install Motion Detectors: Some motion detectors today have video capabilities, and some even have responsive automated voices that can talk back. Installing these devices around the house helps you watch your loved one from wherever you are.
  • Remove Rugs: Rugs are the number one cause of falls in the home.
  • Take No Solicitors: Consider posting a “No Solicitors” sign at the front door to avoid any unexpected visitors. Also, have other family members pick up the phone because a person with Alzheimer’s disease can often be the victim of telephone exploitation.
  • Set Up Locks: Keep hazardous materials such as medications, weapons, plastic bags, remote controls, kitchen or power tools, cleaning products, small appliances, or anything valuable locked up and away from reach. Consider removing locks from the bathroom in case your loved one locks themselves inside. However, do not keep doors locked to prevent anyone going in and out since this is a fire hazard. Instead stick to video monitors and door alarms.

The Importance of Building Muscle Mass
Here are more reasons for older adults to strength train based on a study from the University of California, Los Angeles that indicates a new link between improving muscle mass and longevity.

Muscle mass can be a critical component to longer life. Not only does muscle mass contribute to a healthy, balanced system, it can also help if you should fall. Do you have the power in your lower body, upper body and core to easily pull yourself up? Building muscle and strength can also assist with your balance and can relieve pain.

In an American Journal of Medicine study which examined mortality rates (of all causes) among 3,000 participants, when muscle mass was measured, it was discovered in men 55 and older, and women 65 and older, that total mortality was significantly lower in those who did not lift weights.
If you want to start a program of strength/resistance training, it’s best to begin with a thorough health history evaluation. It’s important to know your current medical condition, medications and if there are any planned surgeries. Also coming into play are conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and Parkinson’s disease.
