2019 ILLINOIS HOCKEY HALL OF FAME BIO SERIES
Steve Drews - Officials' Category
Steve grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and found a liking to the game of "hockey" from his days of watching the Chicago Blackhawks games on TV and playing it in the kitchen with the red and yellow plastic blades with the BLACK and WHITE shafts against his parents who took turns playing goalie. He began playing in 1974 when a local rink (Carol Stream) opened its doors. He played in different youth organizations growing up and was a member of his high school team's (Glenbard North) inaugural year.  After graduating from high school, and while attending the College of DuPage, his not so little brother took a liking to the game as well. Steve was asked to help on the bench with that team. READ MORE>>
Randy Krawiec - Officials' Category
Randy was born in Chicago, Illinois, and moved out to the western suburb of Schiller Park when he was very young. Little did Randy know that the building of the 294 Tollway in his backyard would be his introduction to ice skating; there was a small creek that ran alongside the ramp. Santa brought Randy a pair of hockey skates that Christmas. His dad laced the skates up, and Randy walked over to the creek; his ankles were bent almost to the ground when he got off the ice. Within a few weeks, he was almost able to skate. He knew skating was something he really wanted to do. A short time later, after being persistent, Randy was cruising down the creek, hockey stick in hand, chasing the 'rubber biscuit'. He was hooked! READ MORE>>

IHOA Announces That The Ben Allison Legacy Memorial Scholarship Application Is Now Available
This year marks the 5th anniversary of Ben Allison's Legacy Memorial Scholarship. Ben was a member of the Illinois Hockey Officials Association and USA Hockey's Officiating Development Program. He aspired to officiate in the NHL and was a student at Illinois State University where he studied broadcasting and journalism. Unfortunately, Ben was tragically taken from us in January of 2015, at the age of 20.

Ben was an outstanding official and an even better friend. Anyone that knew Ben would agree that he was the hardest working official both on and off the ice, and he always provided a positive outlook on life and officiating. In his honor and to celebrate his life and legacy, Ben's parents set up a scholarship for officials within the Central District who are either graduating high school or are within their first year of college. If you meet this criteria, we strongly encourage you to apply for this very prestigious scholarship. If you have any other questions please contact [email protected].

Please click HERE to download/print the Ben Allison Legacy Memorial Scholarship application.

Why Playing Other Sports Can Make You a Better Hockey Player
By Greg Bates, Special to AHAI - It's become common these days for young athletes to specialize in one sport.  And yes, a single-sport player could become extraordinarily good at that sport. But it's not a given, said AHAI Coach-in-Chief Jim Clare, and there are many benefits to being a multi-sport athlete.  "To me, the most important part of it is not necessarily what sport you play, it's that you do something else," Clare said. "That at 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 years old, you're not dedicating 12 months of the year to being on the ice." READ MORE>>
