Panel Discussion on Mental Health
Reported  by Anahid Ugurlayan

On Sunday, June 24, by popular demand, St. Sarkis hosted a panel discussion on mental health after the first such program in January of 2017.  Anahid Ugurlayan thanked Der Nareg for agreeing to host a program on mental health in the first place and to all the parishioners who attended last year's event and who asked for another such program, and to all in attendance that day.  She stressed the importance of eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness through education.  Anahid introduced the esteemed panel of speakers who graciously agreed to participate again:
Dr. Yeraz Meschian, is a licensed clinical psychologist, Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as well as a research scientist at Mount Sinai, and the founder and executive director of Healthy Mind NY, where she provides individual and group therapy, family counseling and parenting skills; Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, St. George University who also has a private practice in Queens; and Dr. Carlo Bayrakdarian, a geriatric psychiatrist who has a private practice throughout Westchester and in New York City and was a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Cornell University Medical Center.

Dr. Meschian discussed the link between physical illness and mental illness, specifically how former can lead to the latter.  Dr. Meschian stressed that better management of one's physical health has a positive impact on one's mental well-being.  She discussed the importance of a healthy diet, sleep, exercise, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.  Dr. Gorgissian discussed stress - what it is, how it can become overwhelming and its negative impact on the body.  Dr. Gorgissian noted that severe and long-term stress requires the intervention of a mental health professional.  Dr. Bayrakdarian focused on genomics in psychiatry, specifically how genetic testing helps psychiatrists prescribe medications that are best suited to their patients based on their genetic profile.  Dr. Bayrakdarian explained that prior to genetic testing, patients would often be prescribed medications based on trial and error, from their primary care physician up to and including their psychiatrists, with diminished efficacy after each treatment.  Dr. Bayrakdarian noted that genomics is not only well-accepted by the medical community, from The U.S. Food & Drug Administration to The National Institutes of Health, but that as a result, genetic testing is becoming more affordable and, therefore, more accessible to psychiatrists and their patients.

A lively and lengthy q&a followed which underscored how the stigma surrounding mental health is lessening in our parish thanks to education and awareness.   Thanks to the interest in this subject, St. Sarkis will endeavor to have a yearly panel discussion on mental health and will send a survey to parishioners in advance to determine the topics which are of greatest interest.  Many thanks to Der Nareg and the Board of Trustees for agreeing to host such a panel discussion, and especially to our distinguished panelists for taking time from their very busy practices to educate our community on this most important subject.
Datevig Choir Reported  by Pamela Keshishian
On Sunday June 24, 2018 the members of the Datevig Choir and their families were invited to Mrs. Haikouhi Megerian Choir director's, house to celebrate the culmination of a successful 2017-2018 season of the Datevig Choir.

We were surrounded by close friends. The children had the opportunity to swim in the ocean and play together. We ate delicious food prepared by Degin Haikouhi and barbecue prepared by one of her sons. We ate, talked, laughed, and had a wonderful time together.  In addition, we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset together.

We hope that next year we could have more participants join the Datevig Choir.

We thank Degin Haikouhi for opening the doors to her home and hosting such a beautiful event and all those who attended to join in the celebration.
CIT Training for Summer Camp Reported  by Victoria Yekhpairian Group D Leader

On Friday, July 22, young adults from our community assembled in Pagoumian Hall.  Each will take on the exciting role of Counselor-in-Training (CIT) for the 2018 St. Sarkis Church Summer Camp sessions.

CITs play an integral part in making camp fun for our campers ages 3 to 14 years old.  The CIT experience instills key life-skills for participants including leadership, coaching, collaboration, child development, problem solving and so much more.  Who knew you could learn so much from playing kickball, taking drama class or getting drenched in a Water War?

Thank you to our new class of CITs...we look forward to making new friends and creating some lasting memories for our campers this July.

A READING FROM THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE ROMANS (11:13-24)
But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (14.13-21)
Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!" They said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish." And He said, "Bring them here to Me." Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

ELISHA THE PROPHET
On June 28 the Armenian Church celebrated the Feast of Elisha the Prophet, whose life and works are recorded in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha ("God is Salvation") was a disciple of the Prophet Elijah, who at God's command anointed Elisha, a simple farmer, to be his successor much like Jesus later did in calling his disciples in Galilee. Elisha performs miracles, healing the sick and reviving the dead, a harbinger of the Gospel miracles. His message to his followers was that they should return to traditional religious practices and acknowledge God's sovereignty over all aspects of life. When he healed the sick it was to demonstrate God's power over life and death: when he helped in battle, it was to demonstrate God's power over nations.

TWELVE APOSTLES OF CHRIST AND SAINT PAUL, THE THIRTEENTH APOSTLE
On Saturday (June 30) the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Twelve Apostles of Christ and Saint Paul, who is considered the "thirteenth apostle."

Jesus selected twelve apostles to carry on His work and instructed them to preach and to baptize converts all over the world (Mt. 28:19-20). He gave the title "apostle" to the twelve (Luke 6:13; Mark 3:14). The word apostle derives from the Greek word apostellein (arakyal in Armenian). The apostles dedicated their lives to spreading the Word and fulfilling the sacred mission entrusted to them. Their mission was not just to transmit the message but to put it into practice.

Paul was initially an enemy of Christians and persecuted them. He had a vision on the road to Damascus and became a fervent Christian convert and was subsequently responsible in large measure for the rapid spread of the new religion. Most of the New Testament (aside from the four Gospels) is from the writings of Paul.

The Armenian Church has its roots in the apostolic ministry and succession (Thaddeus and Bartholomew) and is therefore known as "apostolic," (arakelagan). The apostles and immediate successors (including the Armenian Church) defended the Orthodox faith and kept it pure.

"You received your sight, you saw the unspeakable paradise and the third heaven, you contemplated the higher things, interpreter of profound mysteries, thirteenth holy Apostle Paul, father of all, intercede for us before the Lord."
From the Sharagan (hymn) of the Twelve Apostles
