Apply to the Brain Research Foundation Fay/Frank Seed Grant Program
The Brain Research Foundation Fay/Frank Seed Grant Program provides start-up monies for new research projects in the field of neuroscience that will likely lead to extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other outside funding sources.

The nominee must be an Assistant or Associate Professor in a full-time, tenure track position working in the field of neuroscience. This includes molecular and clinical neuroscience as well as studies of neural, sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning in health and disease. The grant proposal must detail a new research project that is not funded by other sources. The internal deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 30.

To support faculty along their career trajectories, the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is offering two new funding mechanisms - Pathway to First Grant and Pathway to Independence. Applications for both opportunities are due on Wednesday, November 14.
policy.uniformGuidance
New Federal Uniform Guidance Procurement Regulations Implemented
The University of Michigan (U-M) implemented new federal Uniform Guidance (UG) regulations for procurement on July 1, 2018. When the UG went into effect in 2015, it combined a number of individual circulars from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) into a single regulation aimed at increasing financial accountability and transparency. However, the procurement changes were delayed until July 1, 2018.

Fortunately, U-M's procurement policies have historically been closely aligned to federal requirements, so the impact of the new regulations is fairly minimal.

There are a few areas in procurement that deserve emphasis, given the recent implementation of the new regulations:
  • Micropurchase Threshold - The micropurchase threshold is $10,000, again, the same as U-M's current bid limit.
  • Public Bidding - The UG requires public bidding for all purchases over $250,000, beginning October 1, 2018, because the UG's Simple Acquisition Threshold was raised to that amount.
  • Sole-Source Purchases - The UG now specifies when a sole source is allowed. See slide 4 of the Procurement presentation regarding federal UG.
  • Conflict of Interest - For federal projects, conflict of interest includes the university employee and the employee's immediate family. U-M's Standard Practice Guide (SPG) section 507.01 does adhere to the UG.
If you have any questions, please contact the Procurement Solutions Team at (734) 764-8212 (option 2), or email  [email protected] , or visit Procurements Using Sponsored Funds webpage.

Sharpening the Focus:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

By Jill Jividen, Ph.D.Assistant Director for Research Development, U-M Medical School Office of Research

(One in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)

Michigan Medicine is making a concerted effort to improve our success rates in obtaining large-scale (>$5 million) research grants, which includes providing support for faculty pulling together these complex proposals. The UMMS Office of Research and the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) provide several resources to assist researchers in these efforts, from planning phases to submission.

Research Development Consultations (RDC): Meet in-person with MICHR's RDC - a committee of successfully funded faculty, biostatisticians, and grant editors, who are ready to guide you on study design, choosing analyses methods, connecting with potential collaborators, navigating the institution's resources, and more.

Accelerating Synergy Award: Awarded by MICHR, this funding (<$100K for 1 year) is intended to help faculty position themselves to pursue a large-scale grant (e.g., obtain preliminary data) or support for personnel or resources to help develop the proposal. Next deadline: October 15

Proposal Preparation Funding: Our Senior Associate Dean for Research will provide <$10K for expenses related to proposal development for large-scale grants, such editing assistance, hosting for planning meetings, honoraria for reviewers, or fees for graphics specialists. Rolling deadline.

Large-scale Proposal Support: MICHR offers a menu of services, including strategic input/conceptualization, providing proposal templates, coordinating writing/planning groups, and offering project management; the OoR's Research Development team also can help with light project management and proposal editing (email [email protected]).

UMMS Proposal Sampler: Look over examples of successful NIH large-scale proposals, including P01s, P30s and a U01.

Our mission in the Office of Research is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the U-M Medical School community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact.
