Third Sunday of Advent
Advent 2020
"Lament and Hope"

This year’s Advent season is unlike any other and our worship will reflect that! Not only will we be living into this time of waiting, but this year we will be embracing the tension between lamenting traditions lost due to COVID-19 and the strong hope that still awaits us at Christmas. Join us for an incredibly unique and special Advent Worship series at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Be sure to have a candle ready!

New Advent Hymn

Yes! You read that right! Pastor Laura and Tom Paulson have once again collaborated on another hymn, How Long, O Lord? You can read all about this new hymn in the Crownicle. We will also be singing this hymn each Sunday in Advent. Praise God for the blessings of collaboration and music!

SPARK Lesson: "John the Baptist Proclaims Jesus' Coming"
This Sunday, during the Children’s Message, Jenni Payne will be reading John 1:6-8 & 19-28 from our SPARK Story Bibles. Be sure to have yours with you and follow along! We will continue to hear about the man and prophet, John the Baptist! Specifically, Jenni will talk about his message of Jesus being the light of the world. When we feel all alone or afraid, it’s always helpful to remember that Jesus is with us, guiding us through, and surrounding us with love.
Nursery Nuggets
Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!

This week we are going to look at the hope this season brings and how we should carry hope with us all the time. Hope is having complete confidence in Christ no matter what is happening. Because we know that God is always working towards our good! At the beginning of the Christmas story, the bystanders (magi and shepherds) are not sure what to expect from the signs that a King is coming, but we know, don’t we? And since we have the inside scoop, being that we have read the story already, here is an excellent Bible verse to remind us to hope:

“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Romans 5:5

We already know the true gift of Christmas is Christ. Therefore, we know we can have hope in God’s promises. In Titus 2:13, we are taught we can find encouragement and joy in the Lord even in times of struggles because we know we live forever in Jesus. That’s why we anticipate his return.
Also, when things seem challenging or sad, our confidence in Jesus being with us always is us having hope. Doesn’t it feel amazing to have hope in Christ?

Activity: Use this to help your child understand that putting our trust in Jesus gives us hope. Tell your child(ren) you are going to play a game of hide-and-seek with a toy. Ask them to choose a special toy and reassure them that they can trust you to hide it in a safe place. Choose a hiding place that is unlikely to be discovered without your help. When your child has searched for a while and seems ready to give up the hunt, offer to help. With verbal clues, lead them to hind the hidden toy. As you celebrate together, thank your child for trusting you during the game. Explain that when they believed you would keep the toy safe; they were showing hope. They did not have to worry about their toy because they had hope that it would be returned safely.

Just as your child trusted you to take care of a favorite toy, we can trust God to take care of us.

Have fun and high hopes!

Music Notes
All my life, music was how I celebrated Christmas. From children’s choir to orchestra to worship services telling the Christmas story in music, I’ve always had music, lots of music. And I imagine that all of us celebrate Christmas with music to some extent – church, mall, community, family, ear worms, you can’t get away from it. This year will be different.

We have the Christmas Narrative, and special thanks to Amy Alberg, Andi Hopf, David Laughlin, Sarah Morrow, Kate Peterson, Doug Sayles, and Mark Smith for virtually providing beautifully sung and played Christmas carols for that. And to Pastor Laura Laughlin and Dan Rue, who are putting in countless hours producing it. But we do not have a Christmas cantata, and we will not be together singing the beautiful, meaningful music of Christmas this year. For that, as your music director, I’m very saddened and sorry.

So, let me encourage you to find a way to sing Christmas music, whether quietly in your heart, or full-throated in your home. Music still warms our hearts, raises our endorphins, fortifies our spirits, and expresses our faith. The music of Christmas is central to this time of year and our celebrations. To that end, here are three songs so meaningful at Christmastime. Take some time and sing along.

In this 2020 Christmas season, let us take to heart these words of Ralph Waldo Emerson. They almost sound like a psalm.

It is not only in the rose, it is not only in the bird,
Not only where the rainbow glows, nor in the song of woman heard,
But in the darkest, meanest things there, always, something sings.

Peace and joy to you and your family,

Tom Paulson
