Seventh Annual One Health Summer Institute 2018 update

Trainings have commenced in Ethiopia with the first training,
Veterinary Pathology, which took place in Gondar with our partners at the University of Gondar and taught by Professors Hailu Kinde and Corrie Brown. This training was followed by
Vaccines and Impacts on Animal and Human Health (Professor Propser Boyaka) and
Molecular Epidemiology, Diagnostics and Genetic Engineering (Professor Wondwossen Gebreyes), which took place in Addis Ababa in early June.
This year's One Health Summer Institute has over 24 trainings with subject matter experts from many different universities and countries. The trainings are rich in One Health topics and adjunct skills. There are numerous more One Health courses to come. Access this year's

Training provides proposal training for 54 professionals in eastern Africa
|

The One Health Summer Institute training,
Proposal Writing, Peer-Review and Grant Management
,
which took place on June 21 - 23 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia had 54 participants from all over Africa, including Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania.
The training was taught by Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, DACVPM, Getnet Yimer, MD, PhD, Mesrak Nadew, MD, MPH, Emia Oppenheim, PhD, RD and Tom Mack, DVM.
This workshop familiarized participants with the basics of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts by outlining funding opportunities for global research, training and outreach in the context of One Health.
Participants submitted proposals for review, and the winning proposal was
Human Papillomavirus Genotype Distribution in Addis Ababa, Urban Ethiopia, which was submitted by
Deborah Teka, Yomiyu Mitiku, Erdachew Yitagesu, Habtamu Sewnet, Joel Bazira, Tilaye Arega, Redeat Merid.

Ohio State MBA students grateful for Global Applied Project opportunity with GOHi in Ethiopia and Kenya
|
During spring semester, seven MBA students at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business were selected to participate in a Global Applied Project (GAP). The seven-week in-class course in Columbus culminated in a three-week in-country experience in Ethiopia and Kenya during which the student cohort worked with GOHi to analyze the international NGO landscape in Eastern Africa.
"The GAP experience has become the highlight of our Fisher journey thus far, and we look forward to continuing to contribute in meaningful ways, not only in our own community, but globally as well. We thank you again for the opportunity," the students wrote in a letter to Fisher College of Business Associate Dean Walter Zinn. Additionally, the students shared:
"Our experience was nothing short of phenomenal. The Ohio State GOHi team in Columbus assisted us every step of the way in designing and implementing a project we all could be proud of. During our trip abroad, we were able to interview and tour a dozen NGOs dedicated to the One Health mission and report back our recommendations on organizational design, strategy, and structure in order to better inform GOHi as they continue their growth. Organizations interviewed included: World Animal Protection, AmRef Health Africa, GalvMed, Sidai, and university-based organizations such as Yale, Emory, and Johns Hopkins just to name a few. We wanted to extend our sincere thank you to the Fisher College of Business and to the Global One Health initiative for allowing us to contribute to this important mission."

Emerging Pathogens Threat Program meeting
|
The Emerging Pathogens Threat Program (EPT-2) is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to help prevent of new zoonotic disease emergence and detect and control new threats when they do emerge. EPT-2 meets on a regular basis to fulfill its mission. Participants hail from a number of institutions including Ohio State's Global One Health initiative, Jimma University, Mekelle University, Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Disease Control, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse and the One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) among others.
In the latest meeting, which took place May 23 at the GOHi regional office, participating institutions each reported remarkable One Health activities beginning from awareness creation to logistic and technical support. These include supporting national antimicrobial surveillance, zoonosis control, creating platforms for young veterinary and medical students in their field practice, laboratory capacity building, research project development and surveys on diseases like anthrax, MERS-CoV and brucellosis. Participants also briefed their respective plan of action on One Health for the coming months.

Congratulations to Nicole Kraft
|
Kraft joined the Ohio State School of Communication in 2010. Her focus in teaching and research has been in utilizing technology in journalism and global education.
Kraft has been involved with GOHi since 2014 in varying capacities, including launching digital and online learning projects in Addis Ababa and Gondar, Ethiopia. She currently serves as a GOHi faculty expert representing the School of Communication. Most recently, Professor Kraft, along with partners at the newly formed Journalism and Communication Department at the University of Gondar are working in tandem to develop a journalism curriculum at the graduate level through the U.S. Embassy's Linkage Seed Grant program. This funding award is part of Ethiopia's mission to support public diplomacy programming in Ethiopia. For more information on this project please visit the GOHi

The award looked specifically at Kraft's media law and ethics course. The teaching award will be granted during the AEJMC
conference in Washington, D.C., in August.

Get to know GOHi: Abinet "Abby" Kebede
|
 Abinet Kebede joined the GOHi Eastern Africa regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June.
Abinet has a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education from Addis Ababa University and a Diploma in English Education from Kotebe Collage of Education.
She has more than 11 years of working experience at NGOs and at governmental offices at different capacities, but mainly in clerical areas.
She assumes the position of executive assistant and quality manager. In her current role, she will support the East Africa Regional Director in managing his daily routines and will give clerical and administrative support to the Eastern Africa Regional Office. From a quality aspect, she will support the WHIP3/TB Challenge Tuberculosis Study team.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease (PATH) award provides $500,000 over five years to support investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology, shedding light on how human and microbial systems are affected by their encounters. The ideal candidate is an accomplished investigator at the mid-to-late assistant professor level with an established record of independent research.

National Science Foundation funding opportunity - Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program
The goal of the Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID) program is to support important and innovative research on the ecological, evolutionary and socio-ecological principles that influence the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. The program's focus is on the discovery of general principles and processes and on building and testing models that elucidate these principles. Projects must address quantitative or computational understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics.
Research in EEID is expected to be an interdisciplinary effort that goes beyond the scope of typical studies funded by the standing programs of the partner agencies.
This program is jointly sponsored by National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Food and Agricultureand the United States Department of Agriculture.
