Seven-Week Pujas for Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche
Words cannot express  the sadness we and the entire family of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery feel this week as we share the news of the passing of our beloved teacher, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche.

After a short period of illness, Khenpo Rinpoche passed away early Sunday morning October 6th at his home at KTD’s Three-Year Retreat Center, Karme Ling, in Delaware County, NY.

Khenpo Karma Tarchin Rinpoche (Karthar, for short) was in his 96th year, having just observed his birthday at KTD Monastery in September. Born in the same year as the 16th Karmapa, Khenpo Rinpoche passed away on the same lunar calendar day as the 16th Karmapa (8th day of the 9th lunar month) but in a different year.

A Buddhist master without parallel,  Khenpo Rinpoche was a source of wisdom and love for everyone he met. He successfully transplanted the wisdom of the Karma Kagyu lineage in a new land, and fulfilled the wishes of both the 16th and 17th Gyalwang Karmapas. There is no way we can repay his kindness, and we are praying he will swiftly return to guide beings in this world.

For the first three days  of Khenpo Rinpoche’s resting in thukdam, or meditative repose, the KTD family has been providing a quiet atmosphere for our master’s meditative rest at Karme Ling. Three days of prayers from the “Rain of Wisdom” realization songs were conducted by a small group of lamas and Karme Ling residents.

Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 9,  we invite all of our sangha and dharma friends to attend prayers for Khenpo Rinpoche at Karme Ling.

We have not finalized a date or location for Khenpo Rinpoche’s final ceremonies,  but we expect to perform the following pujas over the next 49 days:
The Seven-Week Pujas
Week 1: (Beginning 10/12/19) - Amitabha
Week 2: (Beginning 10/19/19) - Akshobhya
Week 3: (Beginning 10/26/19) - Zhitro
Week 4: (Beginning 11/02/19) - Gyalwa Gyamtso
Week 5: (Beginning 11/09/19) - Demchok
Week 6: (Beginning 11/16/19) - Dorje Pakmo
Week 7: (Beginning 11/23/19) - Amitabha

Details  of the Ceremonies will be sent soon. Watch your email for updates. We anticipate the prayers will take place from  9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 to 5 p.m. each day.
The Lhamo Pal Retreat
The Lhamo Pal Retreat  at KTD Monastery in Woodstock  will take place as scheduled 10/12 to 10/14.  This practice was special to Khenpo Rinpoche, and we are pleased to offer this program as scheduled. Here is a link to that program
Some things to keep in mind
Accommodations.  We regret to say that Karme Ling is already fully booked with visiting lamas and residents, and no overnight accommodations are available. We recommend that visitors wishing to stay overnight book with AirBnB (search “Oneonta, NY”) or stay in one of the many hotels in the Oneonta area. Find a list of hotels here

Parking space at Karme Ling is very limited.  Please carpool with friends.

Food.  A simple lunch will be offered around noon.

Dress warmly.  It is cold in Delaware County this time of year and you may have to walk from your parking area to the Lama House, where the shrine room is located.

You may bring offerings of incense, flowers and prayer flags,  and may offer a Kata (white blessing scarf) to the shrine.
While we are grieving the loss of our dear teacher, we invite everyone to pray with us as we give thanks for all the teachings and blessings he has given us, and make aspirations for his swift rebirth among us.
