The Rev. Amy Denney Zuniga, Rector of Grace, St. Helena, and Vice President of the board of Cristosal, is co-leading a group to El Salvador Feb. 17-23, 2019, to join a Cristosal's  Global School Seminar on "Applying a Human Rights Approach to Social Justice."  Come learn with Salvadorans about how to address the root causes and build sustainable solutions to poverty, violence, and injustice. Through participatory learning, we will engage with experts working in the field, conduct field visits, dialogue with civic leaders, and share in inter-cultural exchange.

At the September meeting of the Sebastopol City Council, Supervisor Lynda Hopkins presented a check to the City of Sebastopol to reimburse four organizations for aid provided in response to last year's fire storms. 

Deacon Kate Sefton accepted a check on behalf of St. Stephen's, Sebastopol; this parish was able to provide shelter for 11 days for fire evacuees, many of whom were elders or needed quiet and accessible accommodations. Also recognized were the Ceres Community Project, Community & Disaster Response Team, and Sebastopol Community Cultural Center.

Grace, Fairfield, is pleased to announce that it has called the Rev. Karen Freeman to be Priest-in-Charge. She will conduct her first service on Oct. 7.

A California native, Rev. Karen graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to England, where, through her involvement with the local Anglican churches, felt a call to ordained ministry. In 2009 she graduated with honors from the University of Leeds, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology and Pastoral Studies.

Her latest position was as the Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church in Birkenhead, England. Rev. Karen  is married with two children, and she intends to make her home in Fairfield as she begins her new ministry.

St. Patrick's, Kenwood, took part in the nationwide "Concert Across America to Prevent Gun Violence" during its services Sunday, Sept. 23. 

This is the third year St. Patrick's has participated in this, which is sponsored by Faiths United, an interfaith effort of over 50 denominations, groups and religions.

Orange is the color hunters wear for safety and to be noticed. Fifteen years ago, friends of high school honor student Hadiya Pendleton started wearing orange to honor Hadiya after she was killed by random gunfire in a Chicago park one week, just having performed at the presidential inaugural celebration. Since then, orange is the color designating the effort to end gun violence. At St. Patrick's, the congregation sang a special hymn written for the occasion, prayed a Lament in Response to Gun Violence, used the prayer/collect for the Human Family,  included Prayers for Forgiveness, and celebrated with music of peace and encouragement.

The annual  Church Divinity School of the Pacific Alumni Convocation and Eucharist takes place at All Saints Chapel in Berkeley on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5:45 p.m. All alumni are invited to attend. The Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian '88, priest-in-charge of St. Paul's, Bakersfield, and professor emeritus of Religious Studies at CSU, Bakersfield, will receive an honorary degree at the service. 

The Rev. Canon Andrea McMillin, a CDSP trustee, will preach, and the Rt. Rev. Tom Breidenthal '81, also a trustee, will preside. Following the service, dinner will be served in Denniston Commons.

St. John's, Lakeport, is in need of some 'sprucing up,' including brass polishing, garden maintenance and window washing. The number of volunteers for each task has been determined: 2 brass polishers, 4 gardeners, 4 window washers. In addition, some equipment is needed; including a gas powered hedge trimmer and window washing equipment that can be used on a ladder to reach the second story. 

As most of the work will be outside, please bring protective covering as it can be quite hot during the day. If you'd like to help, please bring a sack lunch, and sign up here.

 

On Sunday, Oct. 14, St. James, Yuba City, will be teaming up with a local church  to pack 30,000 meals. The event will be held at First United Methodist Church in Yuba City. Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m., and the packing will be from 1-3 p.m.  Contact the church at [email protected] for more information, or to participate.

 

On Thursday, Nov.15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Faith, Cameron Park, will host a Rise Against Hunger event, teaming up with other churches of faith in the area, where they will assemble 10,000 food packages. There will also be a potluck at 5:30 p.m. People of all ages can sign up to help here.
