STEAM Homeschool Workshop
Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Do you homeschool? Are you homeschooled? Then come out to our weekly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) experience. There will be demonstrations, experiments, and discovery projects. Children will be separated into groups by age, interest, or skill. There will be an appropriate experience for children in 1st through 12th grade. No registration is required. Repeat attendance is encouraged, but not required.
After School Kids Lab
Wednesdays, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This is an opportunity for school-age kids to have fun on early-out Wednesdays. This program will alternate between making crafts, doing science experiments, playing games, and learning new skills. Book Explorers: Mock Newbery

Geared for grades 4-10, participants will meet once a month to review self-selected books looking for the most distinguished contributions to American literature for children, in hopes of discovering the next Newbery Medal Winner for 2019. Mr. Pransky was a professional baseball scout for 26 years. Prior to his scouting career, he was a teacher and collegiate baseball coach. He is the author of eleven books and spends much of his off-season speaking at schools, civic clubs, and youth organizations. A native of Eldred, Pennsylvania, he resides in Davenport.

Community Connections: Fourth Wall Films Axman

This year marks the 106th anniversary of Iowa's worst mass murder, forever known as the 1912 Villisca axe murders. Emmy-nominated documentary filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films and Dr. Edgar Epperly, considered the expert on the still-unsolved crime, will lead a special Halloween presentation and a screening of Axman, the Rundles' award-winning short documentary. World Affairs Council - Mass Shootings in America: Causes and Solutions
Tuesday, October 23, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Dr. Grant Tietjen, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice/Sociology at St. Ambrose University, will examine and attempt to define the phenomenon of mass shootings and identify the factors which motivate such events (ex: social, political, economic, psychological). He will examine what criminological research/science tells us about mass shootings and how to develop strategies/policy to prevent future occurrences. This program is co-sponsored by the Bettendorf Public Library and the World Affairs Council.
Community Connections: Rock Island Arsenal During World War I

November 2018 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the United States involvement in World War I. To commemorate this anniversary, George Eaton will provide a presentation about the Rock Island Arsenal’s contributions to the World War I effort. George Eaton is Chief of Communications and Engagement and Army Sustainment Command Historian and the Rock Island Arsenal Historian. Community Connections is supported by the Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library.
World Affairs Council - Hollywood and the CIA
Tuesday, November 27, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Dr. Jim Baumann, Associate Professor of Communication at St. Ambrose University, will discuss representations of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Hollywood films and the synergies between Hollywood product, U.S. military/defense interests, and U.S. foreign policy. In particular, the presentation will concentrate on the portrayal of CIA characters in films from the 1990s to today. This program is co-sponsored by the Bettendorf Public Library and the World Affairs Council.

In November, we’ll have 1/144 models of the Space Station and the Test Research Project from Dennis Love in the Information and tabletop display cases on the first floor.
The Library will close at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, and will be closed on Thursday, November 22 in observance of Thanksgiving. 

We will resume regular hours on Friday, November 23.
