Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:
We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix
Faster moving than a Megadeth chord progression and more fun than an Iron Maiden concert (maybe), this heavy metal horror novel poses the question, "What would you sell for rock and roll?"  Apparently, the lead singer of DĂĽrt WĂĽrk sold the souls of his band mates for fame and fortune, but guitarist Kris Pulaski wants hers back.  How do you reclaim a soul sold by another person?  This is a terrific, fun Halloween read with a terrific, bombastic climax.

Gillian Recommends:
Heartland by Sarah Smarsh
I absolutely love Heartland. Through her gorgeous writing, Sarah Smarsh manages to weave memoir, history and social commentary with a lyricism that is both tender and steely. Her focus on the women in her community is heartbreaking and important and she tells their stories with a delicate touch, full of respect, affection, and compassion.

Barry Recommends:
Against The Grain by James C. Scott
If I were to tell you this is a book that's largely about ancient Mesopotamia (what is today southern Iraq) and left it at that, you'd probably say, "Uh, that doesn't really sound like my cup of tea" (or Sumerian beer, as it were). But this book happens to ask very big, extremely interesting questions. To wit: What do we mean when we refer to the "origins of civilization" or "early civilizations"? Was "civilization" typically a good thing for all those involved?  Admirers of Jared Diamond and Yuval Harari -- prepare to engage with James Scott's restless and brilliantly original mind.

Colleen Recommends:
How To Be A Good Creature by Sy Montgomery
Animal lovers rejoice!   Sy Montgomery explores the evolution of her writing career and lifetime love of all creatures great and small in this thoughtful and creative memoir.  Thirteen essays chronicle a selection of creatures Montgomery has either studied or welcomed into her home.  All have a special place in her heart and have, in some way, shaped the individual she has become. Through her life's travels, trials, and everyday occurrences she upholds an ever-enduring compassion for all species.  Snuggle with your own beloved pet and enjoy!
