June 24, 2018: The Planetary Person
How do you describe an idealized graduate of our educational systems? A person aware of the broad view, the long-term effects of personal and collective choices, the value of intrinsic experience, a new kind of person-the Planetary Person. This is how Jerrold Moore, through his teaching career, hoped to create them.
Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Jerrold Moore was given the College of the Redwoods' Portugal Award, which acknowledges excellent instructors. A native Californian, Jerry graduated from Humboldt State University in 1952, with a major in Music Education. He first taught music in local schools, then at the College of the Redwoods, teaching music theory, piano, ensembles, and jazz classes recreating the music of the big band era.
During his doctoral work at Kent State University in Ohio, Jerry focused on music systems around the world and their role in society, and the concept of The Planetary Person emerged. He traveled extensively, learned about cultures where the primary use of music was to reinforce connections to nature, and started a collection of musical instruments from world cultures. He retired in 1999 after producing a week-long symposium on Art-Nature, The Heart of the Matter.

These are truly "words of Joy" as I attempt to express my deep thanks to all those at UUCM who worked to make my last Sunday among you such a wonderful celebration. I was blown away by the tributes, the visitors from other congregations I have served, the many cards and notes, the amazing ladybug cake crafted by Jerene Delaney, the music (and a beautiful original song by Jerry Moore, rendered so movingly by Amanda Morando, voice, Milton Wong, piano and Jerry Moore, flute), the MCing of the proceedings by President Ted Gaebler, and the presence and kind expressions of so many of you.
I want to thank Kat Braeman for envisioning this farewell as more than one to a departing interim minister (I have experienced many of those) because with this particular ending I am also retiring from a long career in ministry. Kat also contacted the ministers in my previous congregations, who passed the word about this celebration. And I want to thank Carol Kerr for collecting your many cards and notes into a well-organized scrapbook that I know will bring a smile to my face whenever I leaf through it, remembering.
Thanks also go to Lynne Scarpa for pulling together a separate farewell reception by the Leadership Council of Chairs, and the heads of the many hardworking committees that UUCM is blessed with.
Finally I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their farewell dinner, for plotting and scheming to make these farewell events so special, and for their generous bonus gift (not to mention the attractive lighted "crystal ball" that I used in my final sermon).
As I sit in my hotel room in Kansas City at the Ministry Days event just preceding the annual General Assembly of the UUA, I can't help but wander back in my mind to these farewell events and to the last UU congregation I have had the pleasure to serve: the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin.
Thank you for all your good work, and for the celebrations. They were truly the celebrations of a congregation that has worked well together with their interim minister. As you begin your relationship with your next transitional minister, I wish you every success in your work together.
With great affection,
Joy

Summer travel and family activities mean that regular Religious Exploration classes at UUCM for youth are on a summer break until August 26.
Our nursery and space for for the youngest children (0-6) will have adult supervision through the summer weeks and there will be a quiet activity table for older kids in the back of the sanctuary space.
Watch the newsletter for updates about Sundays where member volunteers may stage activities for all ages or notices about YRUU events.
