Sumatra

The Backstory:
Good Sumatras have become difficult to find, and expensive. We were excited to see this nice offering cross our table recently, and at a relatively decent price. It's not a carefully pedigreed coffee with an extraordinary story, just a solidly good Sumatra at a decent price.

Cupping Notes:
Classic Sumatra cup profile - big and earthy. Slightly herbal character, with exotic spice notes of clove and fruited nuances of tamarind and raisin.

SPECIAL NOTE:

We have the last of the Sumatra at the current price.  There is about to be a price hike.  Here are the reasons why...
  • The usual harvest period of the coffee beans in Sumatra is during the months of October through to January, which, in recent times is impacted by unprecedentedly bad and unpredictable weather.
  • There are several factors affecting the crops, mostly, the weather that has been crucial to the crops.
  • There were striking and alarming sites of the tree branches dead at the edges and the fruits going rotten and moldy, but, surprising enough, nothing could be made out as to the cause of all these mishaps - if it's a rainfall disaster, fungal infection or the volcanic ashes.
  • Given the gloomy production and export scenario due to the failure of the Spring crops, it can be well predicted that the prices will continue to hike, the shipments are to be delayed and there is no clear picture whatsoever of the future forecast. The InterContinental Coffee survey team will make it to the other unexplored regional provinces of Sumatra, to ascertain the fluctuating trend of yield crops as per shipments, and the progress of the winter-crops due in the month of October.

Happy Thursday!

This week, we are featuring a couple of our initial coffees.  As you saw in the note above, Sumatra is going to be virtually impossible to buy in the upcoming months.  Take advantage of the current crop we have before the prices skyrocket.

The weather is getting hotter than hell here in NC as I've heard about in other places.  One of our favorite coffees we use for iced coffee is the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe.  We brew our coffee hot and place it in the fridge.  The trick is to NOT put ice in your coffee while cooling it down.  Otherwise, you'll have watered down coffee.  It's ok to put ice in your coffee, after it's been refrigerated.   A little half and half makes it creamier, as well.

Have a great week!
