This month's article may seem premature, but I would like to explore a future opportunity that only comes around every two years. That opportunity is attending the January 2019 ACHPER International Conference at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Your immediate reaction may be.... I am just dealing with 2018 at the moment, I haven't thought that far ahead! Yes, I understand that reaction, but may I just encourage you to do some forward planning that might just help you ease back into 2019 with fresh thinking, some new ideas (top tips) and some new personal connections.
Reconfiguring HPE and Sport to Enrich Communities is the theme for 2019 and is building of the success of the 2017 Conference, which saw 350 members and HPE professionals enjoy a stimulating and thought provoking three days of sessions and activities.
The 2019 Conference will start on Monday 14th January concluding on Wednesday 16th January. Within that three day period there will be a great variety of practical sessions, presentations and workshops. There really is something for everyone - teachers (both primary and secondary), academics and professionals working with the HPE sector.

ACHPER is pleased to announce our second Keynote Speaker Dr Jo Harris, for the 2019 ACHPER International Conference in Canberra.
Jo Harrisis a Reader in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy plus Director of Teacher Education at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
Jo taught in secondary schools for 12 years and has been a teacher educator for 28 years. As Director of Teacher Education at Loughborough, she has led consecutive Ofsted inspections in which teacher education has been judged 'outstanding'. Jo has held prominent roles within, and been the recipient of a number of awards from, national physical education subject associations for her significant and sustained contribution to the profession.
Jo's research focuses on health-related learning in physical education and the promotion of active lifestyles in schools and she regularly publishes in professional and academic journals and presents at national and international conferences. In recent years, she has attained the status of Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, received awards for research-informed teaching and high quality postgraduate supervision, and co-published a book with Human Kinetics on 'promoting active lifestyles in schools'.
31st International Conference - January 2019 FRITZ DURAS LECTURER ANNOUNCEMENT - Jan Wright
ACHPER is extremely pleased to announce that Emeritus Professor Jan Wright will present the 2019 Fritz Duras Memorial Lecture.
Jan Wrightis an Emeritus Professor in the School of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Wollongong. She has been a health and physical education teacher in schools, and a lecturer and researcher in the field for over 40 years. Jan has consulted with various state and national departments of education on gender issues and was a member of the National Advisory Panel for the Australian Curriculum: HPE. She is committed to bringing a socially critical and educative approach to teaching Health and Physical Education in schools and higher education.
Jan's research draws on sociological perspectives to critically engage issues associated with the relationship between embodiment, culture and health. Some of her recent research has focused on the meaning of health and physical activity in the lives of young people and the role school-based health education plays in shaping children and young people's understandings of their bodies and health.
