The Wave
May 11, 2018
I am happy to introduce and welcome Nic Chapin to the TRCS family. You can read his message to you below.  Nic will be working at TRCS next year, taking the lead at our outstanding school!

I want to take a moment to congratulate the board, who spent countless hours representing the best intentions for the future of TRCS. They interviewed many potential candidates, they believed in the positive outcome of their work, and magically it happened. All of us in the TRCS community are thankful for their investment and professional way that they managed this very difficult search.  Hank Harris, who worked on his end, helped to make this process positive and full of opportunities. When people in your midst, go out of their way to represent all that is good - you have to stop and tip your hat at such fine work!  I am proud to be a part of such an organization, one where kids are the foremost thought.  I will be working with Nic over the 2018/19 school year, providing support and guidance from the outside. I am not far - and TRCS will never be far from my heart.

Great work and Godspeed to all!

~ Katherine

Dear TRCS Community,

I am very excited to be joining Three Rivers Charter School for the 2018-2019 school year. Eleven years ago, I entered into public education and I have found it to be one of the noblest of professions.

I grew up in Oregon City, attended Oregon State University and graduated from George Fox University with a degree in history. I spent the next year at Colton High School as an instructional aide in the counseling office. It was at that point that I realized how much I enjoyed working with students, and helping them to reach their goals. I decided to go back to George Fox and earn my Masters Degree in Teaching. After graduation, starting as a PE and history teacher, I began my first permanent teaching job at Alliance Charter Academy (ACA), and I have spent the last nine years there. During this time I began working on my administrative license at Concordia University. Upon completion of my administration license I accepted the position of Lead Teacher for two years. I was then promoted to co-director and then to the executive director and principal position the following year. I have spent the past two years in this position and I have enjoyed the work of school administration and educational leadership.

When I am not in school I love boating on the river, meeting for coffee, exploring new restaurants in Portland, playing with my German Shepherd named Sampson, watching the Blazers, engaging in almost anything to do baseball, and rooting for anything Oregon State.

As a teacher and educational leader, I have learned that every student has unique educational needs. It is because of each child's uniqueness that I believe in small class sizes and a personalized approach to learning in order to drive rigor and success in the classroom. When students graduate from Three Rivers, I want them to be active problem-solvers, have academic stamina and have experienced unique learning environments that have set a foundation for them to be successful, lifelong learners.

After participating in my first staff meeting, I am already seeing what makes TRCS so special. The staff is passionate about TRCS' mission and vision. In my short time on campus I have already seen TRCS' dedication to ensure that every student gets the best education possible. John Hattie states, "Strong teacher student relationships shape the way children think and act in school. When you have a good relationship with your students, they are more likely feel positive about class and about school in general. They are also more willing to have a go at hard work, to risk making mistakes, and to ask for help when they need it. Therefore, it is not surprising that research shows constructive teacher student relationships have a large and positive impact on students' academic results." I saw this impact the first time I was at TRCS. It is very exciting and not something that you see in every school.

I am committed to positive communication, transparency and building positive relationships with all the stakeholders. Together, we will continue to grow the work and mission first envisioned by Katherine Holtgraves and Merilee Bales. In conjunction with the excellent staff, outstanding families, and dedicated board members, we will stay the course and focus our sights on providing our students with the greatest possible education.

I look forward to partnering with all of the Three Rivers Charter School stakeholders in their efforts to continue building a positive learning community, with the belief that by becoming creative, compassionate, accountable learners, we will positively change our society.

I hope to meet you on May 17th, at the TRCS Parent Tea.

It is time to start thinking of next school year and we invite you to send in your intention forms for the 2018-19 School Year! Click here for the form. These forms will be due to the TRCS office by Friday, May 25th. If we don't hear from you we will call you on Thursday, May 24th, to see if you received the intention form and are planning to return to TRCS next year. Please note, you do not return your form by May 25th, your spot in the school will not be saved. We will be filling any openings from the lottery that is being held on May 31st @ 4:00.

As you consider next year, please keep in mind this is a choice that is family driven. We ask that these conversations happen at home and not at school with friends. There can be undue pressure put on others and we want to keep our kids focused on their work - not on the drama that these intention forms can cause.

Please be aware that your decision is confidential, and we need to know as we build enrollment numbers for the 2017-18 school year. Additionally, we ask that when you make this choice and commitment, you stick to this decision. Any uncertainty or soft commitments for next year affects opportunities for new students and families at TRCS. We know these decisions can be difficult and a lot of thought goes into them. It is very important that everyone know that the decisions made affect more than just an individual and their family. It affects the community as a whole, too. We want to have a clear picture of who will be returning so we can give as many opportunities to those who wish to attend as possible. Thank you so much for your understanding and assistance as we prepare for next year!

Please be sure to email the teachers if your students are doing more than 1 hour for 4/5 and more than 1.5 -2 hours for 6/7/8 per night. We are giving plenty of in class work time for all of the projects.  Our afternoons for the coming weeks will be IP work times. Your kids should only have 20/30 minutes of literature and 20/30 minutes of math. These regular classes continue until the end of the year and IP work occurs during school. If your child "chooses" to work on their projects or are behind, and you believe it is excessive, that is the time that you contact us via email at  [email protected].  We want to make sure that this spring is healthy and happy all the way around.  Thank you for your part in helping with that.
