Residents, Your Help Needed:  Please Complete This 5-Minute Survey
AAFP and the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies have created an  important survey aimed at residents . The survey takes 5 minutes and it is an important opportunity for you to participate in the creation of national policy that relates to the primary care workforce.

The survey is voluntary and anonymous. It seeks to understand what resources are available to residents in searching for post-residency employment, the type of employment that residents seek, and where residents might want to work.

Any questions can be directed to Robert Baillieu, MD.
Cody, Santpurkar Travel to Austin to  Family Physicians National Conference
Cody, left, and Santpurkar, at the ACOFP national conference this past March.
With scholarships from the MAFP Foundation, two William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine students attended the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians annual convention this past March. Each student is awarded up to $1,000 in reimbursements for registration, meals, and travel expenses to the event's location in Austin, TX.

Anita Santpurkar, a 3rd year WCUCOM student, said she enjoyed learning about specialization. "I learned about the different routes one can go with the family medicine residency, including sports medicine, OBGYN and pediatrics," she said. "I learned how inclusive family medicine was, and how many different options I had."

Terra Cody, who is completing her 3rd year at WCUCOM, said her favorite presentation was one on rural medicine. "Dr. Jacob Curtis gave an amazing talk on his personal life as a rural family doctor along with the expectations to have as a rural doctor," Cody said. "Wanting to be a rural physician myself, I found this one the most intriguing and helpful."

Spring Fling Wrap-Up
About 89 residents and students attended the MAFP Foundation's Spring Fling on April 21, which brought together people from both medical schools in Mississippi and all four Mississippi family medicine residency programs. Attendance at the event grew 33% over last year.

The day-long event featured speakers on mastering the MATCH, opioid prescribing, dispelling myths about family medicine, financial planning and an introduction to manipulation techniques. In addition to the residents and students, 22 exhibitors were on hand as part of ROMP, the Rural Opportunities for Mississippi Physicians trade show.

Several residents took part in a QI poster presentation during the trade show, answering questions about their research.

The day concluded with a crawfish boil on the Barnett Reservoir featuring fresh crawfish catered by MAFP member Dr. Bradley Suggs, live music and a corn hole tournament. Residents and students were able to socialize with active physicians at this joint event with MAFP. More than 50 active physicians took part.

Those who attended are encouraged to fill out the event's online evaluation to give organizers feedback on this year's event:

Next year's event will be held in April 2019.

MBN's Dowdy Speaks to WCUCOM Students
At William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine on Feb. 9, the college hosted John Dowdy, director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, at a lunch meeting on campus. MAFP Foundation arranged for the speaker. Dowdy offered a law enforcement perspective on prescription opioids and gave some cautionary tales. He advised rising physicians what they needed to be aware of regarding opioid prescribing.
