With heartfelt thanks for the generosity of our sponsors and donors, the net proceeds from this year's Conference on Business & Ethics will provide Catholic elementary school tuition assistance to more than 350 young children from financially challenged families.

Our 16th annual Conference was the first in history to have sold out nearly two weeks before the event. In addition to the nearly 1,000 attendees, hundreds more logged on to view the live webcast that included presentations by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, Father Dave Dwyer, the host of the Catholic Channel's, Busted Halo Program on Sirius XM radio channel 129, and Bruce Rollinson, head football coach for Mater Dei High School.

 

In his talk entitled, "Does the church have anything to say about business" Cardinal Dolan was clear that in business we are all called to make a difference, or make money to make a difference. Unlike the common misconception that money is the root of all evil, he explained that money is morally neutral, depending on how it is used. He noted the four principal points or practical implications of the Church's economic teachings:

In addition to being the emcee for this event, Father Dave Dwyer presented something of a roundup of the guests/authors he has interviewed that address the topic of "Living your Catholic faith in the world of business."

 

Coming off an undefeated season and winning the CIF Division 1 Championship, the State Open Division Championship and being named the National Champions by USA Today, Mater Dei's football coach, Bruce Rollinson, received the Farmers & Merchants Lifetime Achievement Award. His theme was "You create the effort, God controls the outcome."

Introducing Coach Rollinson was Daniel Walker, the Chairman of Farmers & Merchants Bank, who invoked his corporate mission: "The home, the church, and service above self."

 

Receiving the Bishop's Award for Exemplary Business Integrity were: Tim Buckley, CEO of Vintage Design; and Tim Strader, Chairman of Starpointe Ventures.

The purpose of the Conference on Business & Ethics is to raise funds to provide financial assistance for students in the Diocese of Orange who desire, but otherwise cannot afford, a Catholic education. One hundred percent of the net profits from this event support tuition assistance with 80% granted the following school year and 20% invested in our Tuition Assistance Endowment. Although at press time we don't have an audited statement, we are confident that after all expenses, this event will net in excess of $550,000, an all-time record!
