This summer, Warren Johnson from Monroe, GA will join outstanding high school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career oriented development experience, National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): National Security, taking place in Washington DC.
NYLF National Security is one of the Envision family of programs that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.
Warren, a rising senior at Apalachee High School is among the top 5% of his class. He was identified by NYLF due to his outstanding academic achievements. Warren has an interest in computer science and cyber security. From this experience he hopes to gain valuable career insight to guide his future. As a summer intern in the IT department with Barrow County Schools, he is well on his way.
"NYFL National Security is a great opportunity for high-achieving scholars to get outside the classroom and see, through hands-on interactive learning, how to innovate and think creatively," said Andrew Potter, the Chief Academic Officer for Envision. "These students, who have already proven themselves academically, will be challenged to work on real-world, student-created projects to bring their studies and career interests to life." AHS Principal Jennifer Martin adds "Warren is an excellent student and leader at Apalachee. He excels in all he does and his interests are vast. His focus on leadership and service make him stand out in our hallways. We are excited for him to have this incredible opportunity."

BES Students Support Community
As part of Bethlehem Elementary's continued support of Adult Literacy Barrow, the school was recently named to the Literacy Honor Roll by the Certified Literate Community Program of Georgia. Sally Brown, director of Adult Literacy Barrow presented the Honor Roll certificate to Principal Mindy Reid and Assistant Principal Meridith Wages. For the past four years, BES has raised money to support adult learners in Barrow County by holding a Read-a-thon event in which students can donate $1 to wear pajamas for the day and participate in scheduled reading times in the gym. The school has generated over $1000 in donations each year. The money raised by the school helps fund an Adult (English to Speakers of Other Languages) ESL class that meets on the campus twice a week. "BES is proud to work alongside Adult Literacy Barrow in supporting the adults in our community who are learning to read, who are learning English, or who are working to obtain their GED. We are honored to support our community in this manner."
Focused On Student Excellence
A Title I High Progress School is among the highest 10% of Title I schools in the state in terms of high academic progress. Calculations to identify these schools are based on the achievement of the "all students" group in terms of proficiency on the statewide assessments from 2014 to 2016. In a letter to Dr. McMichael, Mr. Richard Woods, Georgia State School Superintendent stated "As we continue to personalize learning for all students in our state, schools like yours make me confident we will reach our goal of expanding educational opportunities for all students in Georgia. You have cast aside labels and created a school that is focused on student excellence and building strong communities." These words accurately characterize the significant accomplishments of the five schools in Barrow County that were recently designed as Title I High Progress Reward Schools.
