Smith named new Boys Basketball coach
Sean Smith has been named the new Boys Basketball head coach, bringing 17 years of coaching experience including 12 as a varsity boys' head coach. Coach Smith began his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant at Indiana University Southeast under Coach Walt Corbean following his own four-year playing career at IUS under Corbean and longtime coach Jim Morris. During his time as a Grenadier, Coach Smith was a member of the 1,000 Point Club and a two-time All Conference and All Region Player.

After leaving IUS, Coach Smith was a three-year assistant boys' basketball coach at Charlestown High School before taking over the reigns as the boys' varsity head coach at the age of 28. In his second season, Smith led a veteran Pirate squad to a 20-4 record, which included a sectional championship, Mid-Southern Conference championship, and a Silver Creek Holiday Tournament title. In 2011, the Pirates won another Mid-Southern Conference Championship and had a runner-up finish in the sectional.

In 2014, Coach Smith left Charlestown and took over the boys' basketball program at West Washington. In 2016, the Senators set a school record with the first-ever 20-win season in school history, which included the first boys' sectional title since 1996 and the program's first ever regional championship. The Senators followed up in 2017 with another successful campaign earning back-to-back 20-win seasons and sectional titles.

Coach Smith and his wife, Amy (Peterson '98), reside in Sellersburg with their three children, Addison, Avery and Carter, and are members of St. John Paul II parish. Coach Smith said he and his family are extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to become a part of the excellence and tradition of Our Lady of Providence High School.

Principal Mindy (Lankert) Ernstberger '74 said, "Sean's strong faith background, successful experience, and obvious talent and dedication to the growth and development of our young people will serve him well in his new role at Providence. We are excited to have him joining the Providence community."
Science classes receive hydroponics unit
Science teacher Mrs. Laura Swessel has wanted a hydroponics unit for her students and STEM Club participants for several years, but the price of the units was too expensive. When she heard of Scott Massey, a recent Purdue University graduate and new business owner, she found a way to meet that need while also having him speak about the entrepreneur side of STEM.

Massey and a fellow engineering students co-founded Heliponix their senior year of college in order to produce the patented GroPod, a computerized hydroponic food unit that uses the company's patented seed pods (think Keurig pods) to grow plants indoors. Mrs. Swessel
has purchased one and plans to use it to teach students about alternative agriculture and entrepreneurship. Read more
Old textbooks put to new use
As more school subjects transition to ebooks, the old textbooks need to be disposed of. Science teacher Mrs. Laura Swessel previously sold old textbooks on a book purchasing website but when that went out of business, she reached out to teachers in the state and offered our old books. 

The old  Earth/Space and AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry textbooks now have new homes.  Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis is using the chemistry books, and  Herron High School is using the Earth/Space and Physical Science books.
STUDENT PROFILE
Providence represented at HOBY seminar

Rising junior Maria Popson, pictured above on the far left, represented Providence at the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar held at University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis earlier this month. She joined more than 160 other young high school leaders from the region and was the only one from Clark and Floyd counties.

Maria is a Student Ambassador and was the sophomore delegate for the House of Integrity in 2017-2018 and hopes to be a junior delegate this coming school year. She said she enjoyed the seminar and was glad to develop her leadership skills. Here is more about her time at the weeklong camp:

Question: What did you think of the experience?
Answer: HOBY taught me to be a better leader through serving others and being more interactive with others. This was a learning experience for me as I had to step outside my comfort zone at times and make the most of it.

Q: What did you like about it?
A: I liked being able to meet other high school leaders as well as discussing common issues and how to potentially fix them.

Q: What did you learn?
A: I learned how to identify my strengths and weaknesses and how to recognize the strengths of others in order to achieve a common goal.

Q: How will this information help you as a leader at Providence?
A: This information will help me as a leader at Providence to work with the student body in order to make the school a better place.

Sports news: Girls Tennis state champ, Boys Golf season wrap up, Baseball player drafted by Indians
Trinkle wins first tennis state title for PHS

Following up a state runner-up season is not easy, but the 2018 version of Girls Tennis did not disappoint. The team met each goal created at the start of the season. The girls won the Crawfordsville Invitational for the first time, earned their third-straight sectional championship, secured their third-straight regional title, and won their second consecutive semi-state championship. At state Girls Tennis lost a close 2-3 match to No. 1 Carmel, the eventual state champion. Girls Tennis finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in the state rankings with a 19-3 record. Rising senior Halli Trinkle went on to become the 2018 state singles champion.  Read more

Fitzpatrick one of 15 Boys Golf Academic All-State honorees

The 2018 Boys Golf team had a 55-29 regular season record and placed well in tournaments against tough competition. The team was third in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational and second in the New Castle Invitational. At sectional, the team placed third and advanced to regional to compete against some of the toughest competition in the state.

Two players received individual postseason honors. Shawn Fitzpatrick '18 was named to the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Academic All-State Team, one of only 15 honorees. Will Kaiser '18

Borden chooses U of L over playing for Cleveland Indians

Timmy Borden '18 was heartbroken when the Baseball team lost in sectional to the eventual state-runner-up Silver Creek Dragons. Then shortly after graduation, he was invited by the Chicago Cubs to workout  at Wrigley Field as the team considered drafting him into the Major Leagues. Borden and the Cubs could not come to an agreement, and then the Cleveland Indians drafted him. As thrilling as it was to play on the field at Wrigley and to be drafted into the MLB, Borden chose to stay with his original commitment and play baseball for the University of Louisville for the next three years. 

"I know I'm going somewhere I will develop into the player I have wanted to be all my life," he said, noting that the coaching staff, top-notch facilities, and friends he has already made on the team helped make his decision easier. "It will all come together to be something special."

Borden said he appreciates all the guidance he has received from his Providence and summer league coaches and his fellow players "who all pushed me to be the best player I can be."

He also has been selected to play in the Indiana High School Baseball Association's Baseball North/South All Star series, which will be played July 21-22 in South Bend.
Student-athletes make All-Area teams
The News & Tribune has begun naming its spring All-Area Team selections, and several of our students have been honored:
  • Girls Track: Rising sophomore Julia Christie, First Team; rising juniors Sydney Barron and Ceci Rush and Skylar Richey '18, Second Team; rising junior Kaylee Kaiser, Honorable Mention.
  • Boys Golf: Trey Beatty '18 and Shawn Fitzpatrick '18, Third Team; Will Kaiser '18 and Jarrett Rowe '18, Honorable Mention.
Summer Camp opportunities
Providence has hosted several summer camps so far this month, from football and soccer to volleyball and girls' basketball as well as STEM Camp and a dance camp. Upcoming camps include:
  • Youth Summer Tennis Camp: June: 25-28, 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Open to boys and girls in grades five to eight. Cost: $60. Waiver. Registration form. 
  • Boys Basketball Camp: June 25-28, 9 a.m. to noon. boys grades two-five, 1:00-4:00 p.m.; grades six-nine. Registration form.
  • Volleyball Camp: July 9-10 at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for grades five to six and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for grades kindergarten to two; July 11-12 at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for grades seven and eight and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for grades three and four. Registration form.

Girls Basketball assistant position opening
Providence High School Girls Basketball has an immediate opening for a position of varsity assistant Girls Basketball coach. Interested candidates should be highly motivated, hard working, and talented and also believe in teaching the fundamentals of the game and building player relationships.

The coach will assist the head coach in all aspects of the program, attend daily practices 3:30-6:00, assist with scouting both live and on film, assist in developing game plans and scouting reports, and assist in player development before, during, and after the season.

Minimum requirements for the position are high school playing experience, ability to pass Safe and Sacred training and background check, and ability to attend practices and games during season.

Preferred qualifications are college playing experience, previous coaching experience, flexible schedule to allow for 3:00 arrival time during season, and the ability to attend offseason and summer workouts and camps.

The Fourth Quarter Honor Roll will be available soon and posted to the Providence website.

New Parent Welcome, Freshman Orientation
All freshman parents, especially first-time Providence parents, are invited to attend a New Parent Welcome event on Monday, July 23, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Freshmen will be participating in their orientation from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Parents can meet administrators, purchase school uniforms, set up a cafeteria account, and get help with Skyward. Light refreshments will be served.

Registration grades 10-12
Parents of students in grades 10 through 12, make a note of the following times: Registration for the 2018-2019 school year will be Tuesday, July 24. 
  • Seniors will get their lockers and photo IDs from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. 
  • Juniors will get their lockers, yearbook photos, and photo IDs from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
  • Sophomores from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
Students may also set up lunch accounts and purchase school uniforms.

School uniforms
School uniforms may be purchased at RiverCity Workwear, 4020 Earnings Way, New Albany, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An online store is also available.

Senior Parents Reminders
As stated in the June parent letter, incoming seniors have two required immunizations before the start of school: booster dose of MCV4 and Hepatitis A. Written documentation from the student's doctor is required.

Also, summer is a great time to get senior portraits taken. All seniors must have their yearbook photo taken at Whyland's Studio in Jeffersonville or Lifetouch in Highlander Point in Floyds Knobs. Please schedule an appointment soon.

Summer packets for 2018-2019
Returning and new students will receive information on the 2018-2019 school year in early July via email. All registration forms will be completed online via Skyward.

Summer reading posted
Summer reading information is posted on the school website. Assignments are due on the second day of class.

The Providence offices will be on the following schedule this summer:
  • June 20-June 22: Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

BLUE PRIDE ON DISPLAY
Alumnus artist to create sculpture in China
Guy Tedesco '80 has more ideas for blessing the world with beautiful sculptures than he has the funding to create them. But he continues to promote his work, his proposals, and his art in hopes he will be able to bring his ideas to life. He realizes he'll likely always be a "starving artist," he said, but he can't help but create.

His next project will take him to south China to Chengdu, where he will create a life-size pegasus with a 20-foot wingspan as part of the city's efforts to integrate art into its park system. Tedesco is still negotiating the details but expects to travel to China in a few weeks to create the original for the art piece that will become a bronze statue crafted by Chinese artisans. Read more
