June is Men's Health Month
Lifestyle changes can lower the risk of developing one or more of the top health threats among men in the U.S. These threats include heart disease, cancer, accidental injury, chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke.  According to the Mayo Clinic, lifestyle changes include not smoking, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, keeping stress low, limiting use of alcohol and exercising.

Recognizing one's stressors  is also key to reducing long term adverse effects to our health.  Learn to recognize signs of stress by listening to your body. Moving and exercise prevents stress and helps manage it. Take a walk outdoors or around the office. Other recommendations are:
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Limit alcohol beverages
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise on a regular basis
  • Find something you enjoy doing every day
  • Spend time with friends and family

Smile

Oral health is vital for overall good health. As we age, dental problems such as gum disease and tooth loss can lead to other problems and put us at risk for endocarditis ( inflammation  of the inner layer of the  heart ), aspiration pneumonia, difficulties related to diabetes and more. In addition, many medications cause dry mouth which can lead to difficulty swallowing, a change in one's speech, loss or change to sense of taste and tooth decay.

Regular dental exams and good daily oral hygiene can prevent many of these problems, making for a healthy mouth, healthy heart and a reason to smile.
