Unlocking Opportunity Zones for Equitable Outcomes Webinar by Smart Growth Online
Tue, Jun 4, 2019 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM EDT

The Opportunity Zones program may be the largest and most significant federal community development initiative in U.S. history, with trillions of dollars in new private investment about to flow into pre-designated low-income communities around the country.

The question is whether these investments will benefit the people living in these communities, or will residents be displaced as new interest and development brings increased property values and rents?

Join the Smart Growth Network on Tuesday, June 4, at 1 p.m. Eastern for a webinar on Opportunity Zones, featuring Christopher Coes, Vice President for Real Estate Policy and External Affairs at Smart Growth America and Director of LOCUS: Responsible Real Estate Developers and Investors, and Stephanie Gidigbi, Director of Policy and Partnerships with the Healthy People and Thriving Communities Program at National Resources Defense Council. Lot Transformed Into "Parkside Crossing"
City and state officials joined Randy Salvatore to cut the ribbon - and to enjoy the view from a tricked-out rooftop - on his latest completed project, an upscale development in the Hill.

The event marked the opening of Parkside Crossing at 22 Gold St., the first of five apartment complexes Salvatore is building as part of New Haven's broader Hill-to-Downtown Community filling in land between the train station and Yale's medical district.

The four-story, mixed-use building is home to 110 apartments and infills a surface lot adjacent to Amistad Park.

Thursday's ribbon cutting was the first realization of a plan for community revitalization that was 10 years in the making. Read More

Construction Disruption, Then A Restitched Center City
Two years of construction and lane closures and vehicle re-routing at the southern end of Orange Street downtown will eventually give birth to a new at-grade, multi-use intersection designed to restitch neighborhoods and restore downtown's street grid.

Acting Economic Development Administrator Michael Piscitelli sketched that vision Thursday night at a public information meeting about Phase 2 of Downtown Crossing, a years-in-the-making reconfiguration of the Oak Street Connector and long-sundered connections between the Hill and Downtown.

Two dozen neighbors turned out for the meeting on the second floor of the Canal Dock Boathouse on Long Wharf to learn about the imminent start of construction for the project's second phase, which will result in the construction of an at-grade pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle intersection connecting Orange Street and South Orange Street in lieu of the current mess of semi-highways at MLK Boulevard, Rt. 34, and South Frontage Road. If Tweed Airport gets a longer runway, jobs will follow.
There's a lot of talk about the slow pace of the economic recovery in Connecticut and even more talk about what we can do as a state to spur economic growth. One viable solution right in front of us is for the state Legislature to pass a bill with the potential to bring hundreds of jobs and millions in revenue back to Connecticut from New York.

House Bill 7143 would lift restrictions on the length of the main runway at Tweed-New Haven Airport. It was placed on the House calendar on April 4 and has not budged since. With the end of the 2019 session two weeks away, it's time to get it moving again. Read More
