Action Today. Healthier Tomorrow.
National Prevention Week Kicks Off In May

During National Prevention Week, May 13-19, communities and organizations across the country will come together to raise awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health.

This year's theme, Action Today. Healthier Tomorrow. encourages people to focus on:

*Raising awareness about behavioral health issues and implementing prevention strategies
*Fostering partnerships and collaboration with federal agencies and national organizations dedicated to behavioral and public health
*Promoting and disseminating quality behavioral health resources and publications

National Prevention Week is held the third week of May in preparation of summer, an important time for schools, communities, and prevention professionals to refocus on prevention. Adolescents and full-time college students most often use substances for the first time during June and July, according to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health Data, 2017, on adolescents and college students.

Last year, LEAD teens gave back to the community by assembling meals for

What Are Anabolic Steroids?
(National Institute on Drug Abuse; National Institutes of Health; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)

Anabolic steroids are synthetic variations of the male sex hormone testosterone. The proper term for these compounds is  anabolic-androgenic steroids. "Anabolic" refers to muscle building, and "androgenic" refers to increased male sex characteristics. Some common names for anabolic steroids are Gear, Juice, Roids, and Stackers.

Health care providers can prescribe steroids to treat hormonal issues, such as delayed puberty. Steroids can also treat diseases that cause muscle loss, such as cancer and AIDS. But some athletes and bodybuilders abuse these drugs to boost performance or improve their physical appearance.
