May Parent News: More free stuff & Preventing Summer Slide
What is SUMMER SLIDE?

Students of all ages can lose valuable academic skills over the summer. This is referred to as the summer slide. Students slide backwards and actually lose progress. Students who lose the valuable skills often lose skills each summer of their school career, and the loss adds up.

Fortunately, there are a ton of websites and activities you can use, to help your child get ready for the new school year, while still having fun this summer!

Try www.abcmouse.com , www.nickjr.com , www.jumpstart.com , www.pbskids.org or sign up for the Vroom app for free here: https://www.vroom.org/
You can help your kids learn and remember!
Creating a connection between home and school by reading with your child at home allows your student to practice new skills and strengthen developmental learning processes they are working on like fluency and comprehension. Making reading part of family time with your kids teaches them valuable and important lessons and gives you new and engaging ways to connect with them.  Reading Rockets  has some great tips for ways that you can help your growing reader at any age. We’ve linked them for you below.

Little Libraries from St. Lucie Reads:
The Little Library initiative allows local churches and businesses to set up a small library of children’s books in their lobby or office to share with children. The books can be borrowed or taken, as long as the kids promise to continue reading them at home.
Currently more than 50 local organizations have Little Libraries and we are actively recruiting more.
If your business, organization or church location would be interested in hosting a Little Library, contact them here:
In May, childcare providers were recognized by U.S., state of Florida and right here in St. Lucie County! Help us continue to recognize our best teachers!
Would you like to recognize a provider or educator at your childcare center? May was Childcare Provider Month and at the Early Learning Coalition, we would like to give you the opportunity to nominate a teacher, too.

Do you know a childcare teacher who is incredible with your children, dedicated to the community, or goes above and beyond in areas that matter to our children? Tell us about them!

You can fill out the attached form, or simply send the information in an email to: Sanderss01@elcslc.org

Our community outreach team will select a teacher each month to honor, beginning in July, and at the end of next school year, we will select one top teacher for the year! Of course, there will be prizes involved!
