2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and is quickly approaching . NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season. For 2019, NOAA predicts a range of 9 to 15 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 4 to 8 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). CodeRED Emergency Notification System

With hurricane season upon us, it's important that residents are signed up for the Town's emergency notification system CodeRED. CodeRED is used to communicate in emergency situations or to send critical community alerts such as evacuation notices, boil water notices, tornado warnings, and flash flood notices. Notifications are sent via voice, text, and email based on your preferences. You must be registered to receive notifications. Register here

Test Call Scheduled - June 10

Disaster Awareness Day

Don't miss this opportunity to get a crash course in disaster preparedness from Town, County, and State Emergency Management officials. Valuable prizes will be raffled off throughout the event with the opportunity to win an Amazon Echo! The program will run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will be followed by a free lunch. Co-sponsored by the Town of Kiawah Island and Town of Seabrook Island.

Gate passes will be available at the Seabrook gate house by referencing Disaster Awareness Day.

Brown Trash & Hazardous Waste Collection - Friday, June 7

Brown trash must be placed on the curb by 7:00 a.m. to ensure collection. Hazardous Waste cannot be placed at the curb and must be brought to the Municipal Center (4475 Betsy Kerrison Pkwy.) for disposal between 8:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. For larger items such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc., please call Carolina Waste at 843-576-1100 to schedule a pickup at an additional cost.

Timbers Kiawah and Peter Millar Unveils Custom Beach Cruisers to Raise Awareness for Sea Turtles

Timbers Kiawah - Ocean Club & Residences and Peter Millar have partnered to create a limited-edition beach cruiser to raise awareness for the conservation of Kiawah Island Loggerhead sea turtles. The partnership will offer the exclusive, new bikes to residents of Timbers Kiawah and will also have a limited release available for sale to the public. All proceeds from the bike sales will be donated to the Town of Kiawah Turtle Patrol program. Cruisers are available for $1,200 and can be purchased by calling 843-300-1646. The cruisers have been featured in Newsweek and Women’s Wear Daily.

“Opening a new resort on the beach, we were hyper-aware and conscientious of how development could impact sea turtles, and we wanted to ensure the safety of these endangered creatures and their future,” said Chris Burden, Managing Director of Development of Timbers Resorts. “Partnering with Peter Millar to design a turtle-patterned bike was a great way for us create awareness to protecting wildlife in Kiawah Island.” Read the full press release here

Lights Out for Turtles!

May thru October all outdoor lighting facing the beachfront should be turned off from 9:00 p.m. to dawn. Artificial light such as flashlights, cellular phones, and cameras without filters are prohibited on the beach at night. Nesting females look for dark beaches to lay their eggs. Bright lights confuse them, causing them to abandon the beach in search of a more suitable spot. Hatchling turtles use the natural light to navigate to the ocean after leaving the nest. Mistaking artificial lights for the moon or sun, hatchlings quickly become disoriented, wandering into backyards, swimming pools, storm drains and busy roads. Free red flashlight filters are available at the Municipal Center and Nature Center.

Beach Rules

Please remember the following beach related ordinances:

Stay off the dunes and use public walkovers.
No open fires or fireworks.
No glass, littering, or overnight storage of beach equipment.
No metal shovels are allowed. Plastic shovels under 14” are permitted. Please fill in holes before leaving the beach.
May thru October all outdoor lighting facing the beachfront should be turned off from 9:00 p.m. to dawn.
Never approach sea turtles, hatchlings, or nests.
Pets are allowed on the beach year-round except in designated critical habitat areas. Visit www.kiawahisland.org/beaches for more information on the designated year-round off leash area and seasonal leash restrictions. Owners are responsible for picking up after their pets.

Ordinances are enforced by Beach Patrol (843-518-2880) and/or Town Code Enforcement (848-768-9166) officers who are authorized to ticket and fine offenders.

Reading Partners Book Drive

Reading Partners is holding month-long book drive in June to collect new and gently used children’s books in Charleston area communities for distribution through the Reading Partners’ network of tutors. Please consider participating by dropping off new or gently used children’s books for students in kindergarten through second grade at six Charleston County Public Library locations. The closest drop off location is John’s Island Regional Library at 3531 Maybank Highway, John’s Island. More information
