UBCM Submission to FOIPPA Review   

On June 14, UBCM presented Minister Jinny Sims with local government perspectives on information access and privacy protection. UBCM President Wendy Booth, Vice-President Arjun Singh, and Executive Director Gary MacIsaac made the presentation to inform the Minister's current review of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA), and associated information and privacy measures. Cannabis Legalization Legislation Passes Final Vote  

The Senate has voted to pass Bill C-45 (the Cannabis Act), one of the final steps towards the legalization of non-medical cannabis. Next steps include Bill C-45 receiving Royal Assent, with the federal government committing to an 8-12 week transition period prior to legalization. The actual date of legalization is to be announced shortly. Read more 
Local Government Representation for PRIMECorp

Nominations are being sought for a UBCM representative on the PRIMECorp BC Board of Directors. The successful applicant, subject to approval by the Board, will serve as one of three UBCM representatives. Nominations will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on July 6, 2018. Read more 
Municipal Natural Assets Initiative

There is growing evidence that natural assets provide, or could be restored to provide, services just like engineered assets, and often at lower costs. The Municipal Natural Assets Initiative (MNAI) offers a methodology and support for local governments to integrate natural assets into core asset management and financial processes using the same systems as for engineered assets. Community Overdose Crisis Grants
 
Applications for Community Overdose Crisis Innovation grants are now being received. Funding through this program is provided for proven and effective strategies that respond to the overdose crisis, including new initiatives to strengthen pathways to treatment and care; strategies to reach people who use alone, and Indigenous approaches to healing and wellness. Indigenous Housing Fund

The province has launched the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund, investing  $550 million over ten years to build and operate 1,750 units of social housing on- and off-reserve. Funding for this initiative was originally announced in the 30-point Homes for BC plan. Eligible applicants, including First Nations, can submit proposals to BC Housing before 2 pm on October 5, 2018.
