Another Successful Year of Programming!
Science Clubs, STEMinistas, and Junior Mentors
|
|
In May, SCFG completed a successful year of programming at three Cambridge sites — King Open School, Amigos School, and Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.
Over 150 girls participated in our Science Clubs, STEMinistas and Junior Mentors programs, led by 38 mentors who study and work in STEM fields. Our spring semester culminated in ScienceFests where the girls showed off newly acquired skills to families and friends. We look forward to returning to Cambridge in the fall and to expanding to Boston and Somerville!

SCFG celebrated its mentors in early May who provided over 1500 volunteer hours this year!
They are the backbone of SCFG — mentoring, imparting STEM learning and skills, and contributing to our girls' social and emotional development. Our mentors have an instant impact on our girls' lives and build long-lasting relationships that will carry far beyond their time at SCFG. Some of our mentors have been with individual girls for 4-5 years. Since our girls work with several mentors in a semester, they see a multitude of possibilities of what a career in STEM can look like.

In addition to the traditional mentoring and teaching that goes on between our adult Mentors and the girls
, we also see a lot of casual mentoring among the co-teachers. Our Program Director often overhears conversations among the Mentors and Junior Mentors about studying for the SATs, course selection, the college application process and, of course, fun weekend plans. Recently one group of Mentors and Junior Mentors went to lunch to celebrate the end of a great semester of Science Clubs while another group of Mentors and Junior Mentors went to celebrate the JMs’ college decisions.

Career Skills Night with our Valued Partner, Dell
|
On May 16th, our long-standing corporate partner, Dell, held a fantastic career skills night
for our Junior Mentors and college-aged mentors. Members of Dell's Women of Color affinity group held a career panel, gave a seminar on design thinking, and talked to the girls about how to present themselves through social media including Facebook and LinkedIn. Lots of pizza, cookies, and good advice!

About Science Club for Girls
SCFG fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. With women making up less than 24 percent of the STEM workforce, and black and Hispanic women at less than four percent, SCFG addresses a critical need, offering a continuum of engaging activities in STEM for K-8 girls, leadership experiences for high school girls, and adult mentoring by committed women in STEM.
