WITNESS TO PEPFAR: A U.S. FOREIGN AID SUCCESS STORY
|
The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) brought life-saving HIV medications to Africa in 2003. Local physician, Dr. Ian Gilson, volunteered his skills in Kenya and Uganda beginning in 2004, and has witnessed the dramatic transformation of HIV in Africa from a death sentence to a chronic and survivable condition, due largely to the drugs provided by PEPFAR and the World Health Organization.
At
6:30 PM
on
Monday, March 9th,
Dr. Gilson will relate stories of the heroic doctors and nurses, as well as individuals with HIV infection, who have turned this deadly disease around, and who continue to do truly inspiring work every day.

DIGITAL LIBRARY: CHANGE TO HOLDS
|
Beginning the week of March 2nd, your holds for digital books and audiobooks from
Wisconsin's Digital Library - the Libby app - will work differently.
Once you receive notice that a hold is ready, you will have
three options:
- You may borrow the title within three days
- You may suspend the hold by selecting “deliver later” which passes the book to the next person on the list while maintaining your place in line
- You may cancel the hold
Your digital library holds will no longer be automatically checked out to you. We hope that this new function connects more people with their desired items and decrease the frustration which can arise from having multiple holds come in at the same time.

Everyone Counts
In my daily work, I don’t use primary sources all that often, but when I do, they are crucial. Primary sources are those original documents, transcripts and datasets intentionally collected during research. An excellent example of a primary source used by librarians, genealogists, and patrons is United States census data.
Online completion of the 2020 U.S census survey is being encouraged. The Shorewood Public Library has thirty public computers with stringent privacy settings to ensure safe and confidential access to the internet. We’re an ideal location for anyone and everyone to complete their 2020 census survey.
Please talk up
Census 2020
. If people in your spheres have questions, concerns, or need online access, direct them to the public library, and we will help connect them to the resources they need.

UNDERWATER HISTORY
Did you know that Wisconsin has over 700 shipwrecks?
Tamara Thomsen is a maritime archaeologist with the Wisconsin Historical Society's Maritime Preservation and Archaeology Program. Her job includes diving into the cold, murky water of Lake Michigan to discover and document the shipwrecks that lie at the bottom of the lake. Every ship she finds has a story. Why did it sink? What was the cargo? Were the passengers rescued?
On
Tuesday, March 24th from
7:00 to
8:00 PM, Tamara will present
Underwater History: Great Lakes' Shipwrecks. She will take us down to the depths alongside her, relating the challenges of her work and the shipwrecks she has helped to document.

Here For It
by R. Eric Thomas is a hilarious and heartfelt memoir from Elle contributor (
Eric Reads the News) Thomas, and a welcome contribution to the genre. With signature wit and cultural commentary, Thomas shares his journey to figure out the many parts of his identity in a world that seems to proscribe who he - a black gay Christian man - should be.

by Rebecca Makkai is a beautiful novel about family, tragedy, community, trauma, and activism spanning decades, continents, loves, and lives. From Chicago in the eighties to Parisian riots during the modern day,
The Great Believers explores the way massive, world-changing events like outbreaks and unrest affect the individuals trying to survive them. I highly recommend it.
