Chamber and City exploring "Log Cabin Volunteers" project
The Boyne Area Chamber and the City of Boyne City are working together to see if there is community interest in organizing a volunteer group to provide visitor information in the log cabin formerly occupied by the chamber. We're exploring the possibility of forming a Log Cabin Volunteers group that would provide staffing during prime times when visitors are in town - such as the 4th of July, Boyne Thunder, Friday night Stroll the Streets and Saturdays.
The Chamber of Commerce recently moved its office a block away from the aging log cabin, and the new office still offers member and visitor information and five-day-a-week staffing to serve members, visitors, and residents. But because the log cabin served as a visitor information center for many years in the past, the chamber and the city are working together to see if visitors might still be interested in stopping into the log cabin for information as they did in the past.

Duck Race tickets on sale; You could win $1,000 on 4th of July
 We're getting our ducks in a row in preparation for the Duck Race!
$10 tickets are now on sale for the Boyne Chamber's 31st annual Duck Race at 2 p.m. on July 4th in the Boyne River. You can purchase tickets at the Chamber office, 115 S. Lake Street, Suite A. Starting June 19th, you will also be able to buy duck tickets at Evenings at the Gazebo concerts in Old City Park.
On July 4th, dozens of spectators will be watching and cheering as up to 1,200 ducks float down the river to the finish line behind Lynda's Real Estate. Each ticket and duck is numbered, and the lucky owner of the fastest duck will win $1,000. Second prize is $250, third prize $100, and 4th through 10th prizes are $50 each.

 Chamber, Main Street plan open house next week
The signs are up at our new offices and the Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street will host an Open House on Thursday, June 6th from 12 to 3 p.m. We'll have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon followed by light refreshments and tours of the offices. The addresses are 113 and 115 S. Lake Street.

Raven Hill to host Business After Hours on June 13th
Raven Hill Discovery Center will host the Boyne Chamber's next Business After Hours from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13th. Raven Hill is located at 4737 Fuller Road, East Jordan. Business After Hours is the Chamber's monthly business networking event, held at member businesses. There is no charge for admission or refreshments. Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history and the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. Raven Hill is currently hosting two "Third Coast Conversations" that will focus on water from 4 to 5 p.m. June 1st and 15th, and the community is invited. Pat O'Brien announces
"A Week at the Lake" Local Heroes Award
 There's a new community honor for residents of Charlevoix and Emmet County, supported by Pat O'Brien and Associates of Charlevoix and Boyne City. It's called "A Week at the Lake" - The Local Heroes Awards. The winner will receive a free week's vacation on Lake Charlevoix. The award is
created "to recognize and reward the unsung heroes of service and contribution in our communities." Watch a video about the awards programs.
We all know people in our community who always give and never ask.
They enjoy giving of themselves for others, improving lives, providing comfort, a reassuring hug or a smile. They are the "gold nuggets of good" in our area and while they are not motivated by thanks, they are certainly deserving of it.
This is a chance to do a little something to recognize and appreciate all that they've done.
Nominations are being accepted from June 1-30. Just send in a letter or email nominating a deserving candidate and telling their unique story of service, sacrifice or contribution. The finalists will be announced on July 5th at the Boyne City Stroll the Streets. There will be an opportunity for the community to "like their favorites" online until July 31. The winner will be announced Aug 2nd and rewarded with a much deserved "Week at
the Lake," featuring a beautiful Lake Charlevoix home with up to 10 friends and family, use of a high-performance Tritoon boat and all the fixings for a final night barbecue jamboree.

Ironton Ferry opens; You can check the wait line on new webcams

From the Petoskey News-Review: About six weeks later than normal, the Ironton Ferry began operations for the season on Saturday morning, May 25.The vessel's propulsion system was recently replaced with a new diesel-electric setup. This year marks the second year in a row in which the ferry didn't start operating in its usual mid-April. This year the engine work delayed the start of the ferry's season. "Since 2017 Charlevoix County Transportation Authority has been working with a naval architect and the Coast Guard on a total redesign of the propulsion system," said Charlevoix County Transportation Authority coordinator Ryan Novotny.
He said the diesel engine that previously powered the ferry was at the end of its useful life and could not be rebuilt again. He says the new system should be more quiet, efficient and reliable. Full story.
> Operating hours are 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. from now through Labor Day, with the last ferry run adjusting to 10:30 p.m. after Labor Day.

Volunteer trail builders sought for School Forest Trail expansion
The Walloon Lake Trust & Conservancy has closed on a 40-acre parcel on Erickson Road in Evangeline Township, adjacent to the popular Boyne School Forest Trail. This collaborative effort between the Conservancy and the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association (TOMMBA) will preserve the land for environmental stewardship and protection of the Walloon Lake watershed, as well as provide for additional multi-use trails which will be built by TOMMBA.

Thanks to everyone who donated for the property acquisition and trai lbuilding. The goal is 20 miles of multi-use trails in the Boyne School Forest Trail area by 2020.

Leadership Charlevoix County program graduates 15;
"This isn't the end of your leadership journey, it's the beginning"
Leadership Charlevoix County proudly graduated 15 individuals at its eighth commencement ceremony at Boyne Mountain Resort on May 15th.
To date the program proudly boasts 123 alumni.
The graduates, family members, sponsors, mentors and board members were addressed by keynote speaker Honorable Valerie K. Snyder of the 7th Probate District for Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. In her message to the class, Judge Snyder referenced Peter Anderson: "How to be a great leader - first rule - it's not about you." She concluded her address by telling the class, "This is a commencement - this isn't the end of your leadership journey, rather the beginning."
For their commencement, the LCC class elects members of the class to speak on behalf of the group at their ceremony. The Class of 2019 chose Meghan Meyer, Tricia Drenth and Lonnie Allen.

Boyne Falls Preschool receives highest rating, top 3% in state

Boyne Falls Preschool, located at Boyne Falls Public School, has again received a five-star quality rating from Great Start to Quality, Michigan's tiered quality rating and improvement system for childcare and preschool.
Great Start to Quality rates the level of quality of licensed child care and preschool programs in Michigan. As of May 1st, the total number of all licensed programs and providers statewide totaled 7,874 with 256 of these programs acquiring the five-star quality rating, meaning Boyne Falls placed in the top 3% in the state.
"Over the last 5 years, we have taken steps to continuously improve the educational experience and quality of care that we offer to our students and families," said Mitchell Klooster, Program Director at Boyne Falls Preschool. "We are thrilled to participate in GSQ and to be acknowledged for offering a high-quality program for the students and families that we serve. "Honor system" Bike Share program continues this year
The Boyne Bike Share program launched last year returns this spring and summer. Four bikes are parked on the north side of the Log Cabin at 28 S. Lake Street, and the concept is simple: "Borrow a bike and bring it back for others to enjoy." There is no checkout system, just the honor system, organizers say. They only ask that the bikes be returned each day and not kept overnight. The bikes were donated by community members and service clubs, and they were refurbished by Mike Cortright of North Country Cycle Sport. Helmets are also available with the bikes.
Partners making this new program possible are: Boyne City Kiwanis, Boyne Valley Lions, Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce, Boyne City Main Street, City of Boyne City, and North Country Cycle Sport.

 The city of Boyne City provides city-wide leaf pickup and rubbish pick-up services now in progress.
LEAF PICKUP is on Mondays and Fridays from now through June 7, Please set bagged leaves curbside anytime after the first day of pick up, in biodegradable paper yard waste bags. City crews will pick up bags as time allows.
Brush will not be picked up curbside, but may be brought to the North Boyne Compost Site on Robinson Street, open seven days a week for your convenience.

Electronics and hazardous waste collection will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 7, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 in the Charlevoix area. The spring event is typically held near Charlevoix and the September event is normally held in Boyne City, but the exact location will will be given out when scheduling reservation. Acceptable electronics and hazardous waste items include computers, TVs, appliances, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based paints, chemicals and lawn fertilizers. You can make a reservation online from May 28th-June 6th or by calling 231-547-7221 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on those days. Collection location information will be available during registration. Long Road Distillers takes top honors at Spirits Competition
 Internationally recognized Grand Rapids distillery, Long Road Distillers, was named Michigan Gin Distillery of the Year at the 10th Annual New York International Spirits Competition. Long Road includes a Boyne City Tasting Room, where visitors are able to enjoy samples of their spirits and purchase merchandise and bottles to-go. Over their three-year history the distillery has built a reputation for the quality and innovation utilized in producing their 100% Michigan distilled line-up of spirits, including gins, vodkas, aquavits, whiskies, and liqueurs.
Over 600 spirits from 29 countries were submitted and judged by a panel of "trade-only" judges at the annual spirits competition. The judges come from a variety of disciplines, but all work with spirits on a daily basis. The honor of "Gin Distillery of the Year" is fitting for the Grand Rapids company. "Pine Lake Golf Club Remembered" program set for Monday
The Charlevoix County History Preservation Society and the Boyne District Library Present "Pine Lake Golf Club Remembered" at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3rd in the library lower level Community Room. Master of Ceremonies for this presentation will be Robert White, and presenters will be Roger White and Chad McDonald. The Whites are in town for the Annual White Family Reunion.
The founding of the Pine Lake Golf Club, aka "Ye Nyne Olde Holles" Golf Club, entailed community support similar to that of the organization of the Wolverine Hotel; it was a non-profit corporation that relied on stock purchases of $100 to fund the construction and land purchases. The formation of the Pine Lake Resort Association at Hayden Point, with its close proximity to Whiting Park, reinforced that the area would become the hub of Charlevoix County summer fun during the 1920s and 1930s. The fire tower located there was a focal point for area youths to climb and offered a grand view of the golf links. This presentation will cover the years from Ammon Beers' land claim in 1869 to the end of McDonald ownership in 1976.
The program will be followed by a panel discussion and include an opportunity for the audience to give feedback, share local lore, stories, and photographs. The program is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

The Boyne City Farmers Market continues its outdoor schedule from 8 a.m. to Noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Veterans Park. The market last week unveiled a new "loop" layout, with over 40 vendors already in place and more than 60 confirmed for the 2019 season.
"We are so pleased to be back outside, and look forward to a busy summer filled with fresh, local produce and more," Angelika Rasper, Farmers Market Manager, said.
Watch for special dates featuring kids activities and the Boyne District Library Bookmobile.

Create Studio's End of Artist in Residency Show is Friday

Create: Community Arts Studio (CCAS) is proud to announce the Spring AIR: End of Residency Show, from 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 31st. This special one-day show is open to the public, and allows visitors the chance to visit and walk through the studio spaces of the five graduating artists. CCAS is proud to feature the work of: Maggie Chism of Petoskey High School; Koehn Manthei of Concord Academy Boyne; and Heather Davison, Emma Payton and Sarah Sterling, all of Boyne City High School.
The AIR program is made possible with the collaboration of studio sponsors, visiting artists and local art galleries. Potentially 1000+ passionate Harley-Davidson riders will be coming to take in the beautiful scenery as they ride on various routes throughout the area and beyond. During their time here they will be visiting local businesses, restaurants, bars/pubs and scenic attractions.

"Rolling for Kids" bunco party raises funds for kids with cancer
Let's get "rolling" for Camp Quality Michigan! Join us for a fun-filled night of Bunco to help us work towards our goal of sending two children to camp this summer. Raven Hill hosts Third Coast Conversations June 1 and 15

With help from the Michigan Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Raven Hill Discovery Center is hosting two "Third Coast Conversations" that will focus on water. Conversations are scheduled for June 1st and 15th from 4 to 5pm at Raven Hill and the community is invited. The informal talks will focus on water as our "place". The goal is to explore and talk reflectively, sharing different ideas about how this exceptional "place" lives in us - how our special "place" changes us and how we change/preserve our unique "place" through community issues. The big question is: what does it mean to be from our particular "place" - for you as an individual and for us as a community? What parts of our "place" make us what we are, and how can we change and preserve the features of this "place"?
An exhibit titled: Talking all things WATER will be on display from June 1st to June 21st. Any environmental organization interested in displaying information about their mission is invited to create a small display. Boyne District Library welcomes June with events and programs for all ages. Most events are free and open to anyone interested in attending.
June 1st to July 31st: "A Universe of Stories" Adult Summer Reading Challenge begins. Adults are challenged to read 6 books over the summer. RSVP or stop by the library and receive a reading log. Return completed log by Friday, August 2nd and you will be invited to an ice cream social celebration on Thursday, August 8th and will receive a cool travel mug.

Camp Daggett offers canoeing adventure trip for teens in July
Camp Daggett is offering a true canoeing adventure for youth, ages 13-15, on the Platte, Betsie and Crystal Rivers, July 21 -27.
On this trip, campers will explore some of the most scenic meandering waterways that Michigan has to offer. After setting up base camp in the beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes State Park, campers will head out for daily adventures on the Platte, Betsie and Crystal Rivers, build their paddling skills as they attempt varying levels of swift water and technical riverways. Expect four days and three nights of exploring the wilderness, spotting wildlife, relaxing on sand bars and some of the best beaches in all of Michigan.
This trip will be led by a nationally-certified wilderness first responder with lifeguard certification. The lead staff will be accompanied by a second adult with current first aid and CPR training. Both staff members have extensive experience leading groups in the backcountry. More information on wilderness adventure trips.

It's time to Raise the Roof for Habitat for Humanity on June 27th
 It's time to Raise the Roof with Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity. Join us on Thursday, June 27th for our 7th Annual Raise the Roof event at Stafford's Perry Hotel from 6pm-9pm. The evening will feature entertainment from local musicians Hannah Harris and John Warstler. There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, door prizes, a "wine-pull", and a raffle-style auction all leading up to the main event of the night... the live auction! The Boyne Arts Collective is offering a guided open studio art class featuring instructor Jennie Kimbrough. A guided open studio class environment combines the benefits of private instruction with those of a group classroom environment. Bring your own materials and projects, and get individualized instruction for the work you want to create, all while making art in a group setting. You will be inspired by other artists' work and have the opportunity to share and collaborate with fellow classmates. Instruction will be tailored to your individual art practice, needs, and desire to learn. You get to create what you want to create, and Jennie will help you make it better. Bring all your own materials, including drop cloths or table cloths to protect the tables. Tables and chairs provided.

Senior Center serves Wednesday dinners through September
Wednesday night dinners have begun at all Charlevoix County Senior Centers and will continue through September. The Senior Centers are open from 2-7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Wednesday Dinner is served from 5 to 6. There is no lunch served at the Senior Centers on Wednesdays. We have also added some fun themes to our Wednesday Night, ask the Site Coordinator about what is being planned for your Senior Center location.
Lunch will continue to be served at the center on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The centers are now offering a Cold Plate menu item in addition to our hot meal item. Veggie Burgers are still available daily on demand and we are still offering Fish in addition to our hot meal every Friday.

Of all of these, I find myself listening to the music of Lynn Miles more than that of any other performer who played the club. Her melodies are stunning and I think many of her lyrics are absolute poetry capable of standing alone. If you love good music and have never really listened to her, you owe it to yourself to do so soon. The point of my writing this is that I can easily say Lynn Miles ranks as my favorite singer-songwriter to have ever played The Ark during my tenure over the last forty years. Flat out my favorite.

 NORTHERN MICHIGAN ASTRONOMY CLUB will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at the Wildwood Observatory. The discussion topic with be "How Elements are Created within Stars through Nuclear Fusion." Dr. Bryan Shumaker, Adjunct Professor of Astronomy, will be giving the presentation. Stellar nucleosynthesis is the process by which elements are created within stars by combining the protons and neutrons together from the nuclei of lighter elements. All of the atoms in the universe began as hydrogen. Fusion inside stars transforms hydrogen into other heavier elements. The Wildwood Observatory is located one mile north of Boyne City at 1825 Wildwood Heights Road. Club members will provide a tour of the night sky, weather permitting. All are welcome. KEYS TO A LONG LIFE will be examined at Lifetree Café on Sunday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m. The program, titled "How to Live to 100: Advice from Those Who've Done It," features a short film in which centenarians (people who have reached the age of 100) share their secrets for reaching the century mark. "Commonly, aging is seen as a negative thing in today's society," said Lifetree Café national director, Craig Cable. "This Lifetree episode presents a different view and celebrates the benefits of achieving old age." Lifetree participants will be given the chance to share their opinions of what it means to age well. Video.
