WHAT'S NEW?
NATIONAL LGBT PRIDE MONTH
To commemorate 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, and for the first time under state statute, California has proclaimed June 2019 its first annual statewide “LGBT Pride Month.” At a press conference held on June 4, 2019, California State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), chair and vice chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, joined LGBTQ state leaders, including Commissioner Ricado Lara, to officially kick-off “LGBT Pride Month” in the State of California.

June holds historic significance for the LGBT community. In 1969, the Stonewall Riots occurred in New York City as a protest to the police department’s unfair targeting the LGBT community. The Stonewall Riots led to political organizing that is considered to be the beginning of the modern LGBT civil rights movement. The following year, the first LGBT Pride Parade was held in New York City on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

History of LGBT Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village. The Stonewall uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the “day” soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the United States designated October as LGBT History Month. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association included LGBT History Month within a list of commemorative months.

LGBT History Month is also celebrated with annual month-long observances of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, along with the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. National Coming Out Day (October 11), as well as the first “March on Washington” in 1979, are commemorated in the LGBT community during LGBT History Month.

We would like to express our gratitude to all of the government employees who continue to serve their fellow citizens on a daily basis.

“The Best-of-the-Best designation honors corporations for their commitment to America’s diverse employees and business owners, which includes LGBT people, people of color, women, and people with disabilities,” said NGLCC Co-Founder and President Justin Nelson. “This designation is highly competitive and is bestowed only to corporations that we see constantly striving to strengthen and celebrate diversity. These corporations being honored are true leaders in ongoing global commitments to create a better future for all diverse communities in business.”

Special honorees at the 2019 Best-of-the-Best gala, recognized for their visibility and leadership on issues facing diverse communities, will include: Representative Nydia Velazquez, Chair of House Small Business Committee; U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar; Grammy nominated performer and advocate Deborah Cox; and Schuyler Bailar, the first openly transgender NCAA Division I swimmer. Additional honorees and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks. Washington Post columnist & MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart will return as Master of Ceremonies.

The Insurance Diversity Initiative was established in 2011 to address diversity issues within California's $310 billion insurance industry. Specifically, these efforts are meant to increase procurement from California’s diverse suppliers, as well as to increase diversity amongst insurer governing boards. To accomplish these goals, the Department conducts outreach, creates partnerships, hosts events, and most importantly, administers surveys to collect and publicly disseminate information about the state of diversity in the insurance industry.
