GLOBE TROT 2020
GLOBE TROT 2020 in T-MINUS 2 DAYS!!
Shout out to everyone who has helped us raise MORE THAN $56,000, but there's still work to do!! If you haven't signed on yet to participate, it's not too late. The recommended minimum amount to raise is $50 per student, but we challenge students to exceed that goal via donations from grandparents, extended family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Every amount helps and will be noted! There are big prizes, including a KONA ICE day on campus (Nov. 11th), if we receive 100% participation and for the students who raise the most money! All GLOBE Trot donations contribute to the school’s goal to raise $300,000 in unrestricted funds this school year. In addition to a big raffle, daily drawings will continue each day until the virtual GLOBE Trot event on Friday, Nov. 6!

The COVID Corner
Welcome back to The Covid Corner where you will find the most up-to-the-moment developments in GLOBE's return to campus planning. If you haven't already, we encourage you to review the recent presentation from the Board of Directors Meeting and the list of FAQs addressed in the presentation below. If you have questions that have not been addressed, please submit them here. We will do our best to provide as many answers as we can in this section over the coming weeks. Please understand that due to the dynamic nature of the pandemic, there may be questions for which we do not yet have answers, or situations that may change between now and January.

Look for a Return-to-Campus Survey next week.

While we are closely following DeKalb County School District’s planning, GLOBE’s plans for a return-to-campus will be based on the recommendations of our independently run Re-opening Committee to meet the needs of our community and academic dual-language immersion model.
FAQs Addressed in the Presentation to the GLOBE Board of Directors

When will GLOBE return to on-campus instruction?
GLOBE will return to campus no sooner than January 5, 2021. We anticipate a staggered re-entry throughout the month of January that may vary by grade level and/or campus.

Will there be an opportunity to continue virtual instruction for families who do not wish to return to campus?
Yes.

What prevention measures will GLOBE take to ensure a safe return to campus for staff and students?
The Reopening Committee has begun investigating the prevention measures that must be in place for us to safely reopen. Additional details are forthcoming, but at a minimum, these will include:
  • HVAC modifications
  • Mask requirement for staff and students
  • Physical distancing
  • Enhanced cleaning
  • Ample access to hand soap and hand sanitizer
  • Temperature checks
  • Updated visitor policies
  • Health messaging
What information can we expect to receive in the coming weeks and months?
With a target date for a return-to-campus, the Reopening Committee will begin the granular planning that is required to safely bring staff and students back in our buildings. Forthcoming information will include:
  • Exact date(s) for expected reentry
  • Detailed information about the mitigation strategies that GLOBE will employ
  • Pandemic and operational factors that would prevent GLOBE from reopening in January
  • Pandemic and operational factors that would cause GLOBE to transition back to full remote instruction
  • Details about what the hybrid model will look like and how many in-person spaces will be available

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Question
What case count (e.g. in new cases per week per hundred thousand) triggers GLOBE's return-to-campus?

Answer
Like DeKalb County School District, GLOBE will be monitoring the pandemic conditions (reported as the average number of new infections over the previous 14-day period per 100,000 residents) to inform our reopening. GLOBE's position as a Public Charter school affords additional flexibility to make decisions in the best interest of our academics and operations, which includes the ability to take a different approach to reopening from DeKalb County. Additionally, we recognize that a cutoff of 100 cases per 100,000 does not capture the nuanced nature of the pandemic conditions (i.e. there is no meaningful difference between 98 and 102 cases per 100,000).

For these reasons, GLOBE will not use a strict threshold for the average number of cases to trigger our return-to-campus. Instead, we will take a holistic approach of monitoring case counts, hospital bed capacity (an additional signal of the COVID burden in the community), and our ability to implement all of the essential prevention measures that are needed to keep our staff and students safe.

Additional details about the required conditions for GLOBE to reopen and remain open will be made available as we get closer.
***If you have questions for the Reopening Committee, please submit them here.
