Jackie Spears named interim dean and CEO

Dr. Jackie Spears has been named the interim dean and CEO of Kansas State University's Olathe campus, effective June 1. Spears, who currently serves as the campus' associate dean for academic affairs, will lead the campus while a national search, scheduled to begin in the fall, is completed for a permanent dean and CEO.

Twenty-four students graduate
|
A record 24 students at K-State's Olathe campus are graduating with their master's and professional degrees. It is the largest graduating class from the Olathe campus and includes graduates from the fall 2018, spring 2019 and summer 2019 academic semesters.

Middle school summer camp explores food science, careers
|
From July 15-19, the Olathe campus is offering a summer camp for junior scientists and chefs alike. The Fun with Food Science summer camp will have middle school students exploring the science behind food and the way we taste it. Students will then put their cooking skills to the test when preparing a "capstone project" in the form of freshly made foods for their families and guests.

for its service project. Inclusion Connections -- and their retail business
PawsAbilities
, which sells handcrafted pet treats -- provides individuals who have developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome and autism, with an array of services to help them become more independent. The organization relies on gifts, donations and sales for support. PawsAbilities offers product sales at locations throughout the metro area.
Scherman and his sub-group focused on helping Inclusion Connections and PawsAbilities with distribution and wholesaling efforts.
They enhanced the visual presence and setup of the organization's event booth so that more people would visit the booth to learn about the organization's work and purchase products from them.
They also improved the organization's pet treat production methods and began working with Jeff Tucker, executive director of the Technology Development Institute at K-State, who is helping streamline pet treat production in a manner that continues to engage the adults with disabilities who make them.
Bryan Severns, food programs and services manager, and Tammy Racey, kitchen assistant -- both at the Olathe campus -- were introduced to the PawsAbilities team and are helping them expand PawsAbilities' product base with a beef broth-based pet treat.
Leadership Olathe is an annual program that is designed to improve and strengthen the Olathe community by identifying, inspiring and engaging those who are up-and-coming leaders in their organization and the community.
The Olathe campus has six alumni from the Leadership Olathe program.

"The Hot Zone," May 27
-- National Geographic's limited TV series, "The Hot Zone," tells the real-life story of how Nancy and Jerry Jaax -- two Kansas State University veterinarians and leaders, and members of the Greater Kansas City community -- responded to an Ebola-related outbreak. The six-part series premiers at 8 p.m. May 27 on the National Geographic channel. A July 15 event is being planned for the Kansas City community. |

It was with heavy but full hearts that members of the community and Kansas State University celebrated the second -- and final -- retirement of Dr. Ralph Richardson as dean and CEO of K-State's Olathe campus. Richardson's 49-year career has revolved around veterinary medicine and the life sciences and included nearly 20 years as dean of the K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine and four years at K-State's Olathe campus. His leadership and vision has been invaluable to K-State, its Olathe campus and Greater Kansas City.

Becky Fast, District 1 - Johnson County Commissioner, stopped by campus for an overview of academic and professional development offerings, community outreach and K-12 engagement. She also toured the facility and learned a bit about the history of K-State and the campus.
