2019 Stewardship
Our Stewardship Campaign is under way and pledges are coming in. Thanks to everyone who has already returned their Pledge Form. Stewardship letters have been mailed to everyone who was not at the Parish Meeting. If you have not received the Stewardship Letter and Pledge Form, please click below to open a copy of them. Window Dressers Wrap-Up
Well, we did it. St. Brendan's hosted the first Summer Window Dressers Community Workshop. Thanks to all the people who pitched in, many coming back several times over the workshop days, snatching an hour or two from end of summer visitors or bringing them along for the fun. One of the best spontaneous helping moments came the first day, after the frames were assembled by Jack March, Dave Bayley, Herm Kidder, Dan and Bunnie Reardon, and Tom van Buren. They had all gone home when Rita O'Brien and I started setting up the various stations and noted that a connector piece seemed to be missing from the frame that holds the heat gun in position to shrink the film. At that moment John Lofty walked through the door, analyzed the situation and
took off for the hardware store, coming back with pieces that allowed us to complete the set-up.
Miriam Antich, Sheila Nichols, and Judy Miller provided delicious soups and a casserole. 44 North donated a bag of coffee to pair with Miriam's winning cinnamon rolls. Katy Allgyer doesn't even have windows ordered yet but jumped in with eagerness to learn all phases of insert construction and brought a tasty variety of cheese and crackers and fruit and veggies for snacks.
The picking up process this year is slow. Without chilly winds upon us it is easy to put off the last planning push. However, appointments have been made for a Friday afternoon pick- up time and the weekend will provide time for some deliveries. Soon there will be no signs of Window Dressers in the great hall but the activity of repairing inserts that have suffered from accidents will continue in the basement.
From conversations I overheard while building inserts and from direct comments after the fact, I know we have expanded our base of window insert enthusiasts. At least two customers expressed interest in the PR aspect of the project and both of them I know to be artists and tech savvy. I will reel them in, come Winter! Getting the word out in a way that inspires folks to make the initial inquiry continues to be a challenge.

Reclaiming Jesus: A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis
In June a distinguished group of leaders of various denominations including our own Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, released a document entitled Reclaiming Jesus: A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis. It has evoked much discussion.
After the Sunday Eucharist Sunday September 23rd, members of the Worship Committee will lead a discussion of this significant statement. Please read and attend and contribute to a lively discussion.

"Kaleidoscoping Christianity"
Beginning September 23rd: A
six-week exploration at Reversing Falls Sanctuary toward a deeper understanding of the Christian faith in these days (wrestling with the tradition all the way to mystery).
Pastors, priests, professors and poets rooted in the Christian tradition and active in the Christian community will share ways in which they have taken some of the traditional symbols, words, and teachings of the Christian Church and have "breathed new life into them" through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction. Just as a kaleidoscope uses pieces of colored glass, rearranging them in new patterns for new visions and insights, these faith leaders will speak of the ways they have broken open and rearranged pieces of the Christian tradition in an effort to uncover the life and fire and mystery that lies at the heart of the faith.
Each gathering is on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 4:00, and wrapping up about 5:30, with time before and after for participants to view art work done by local artists reflecting the themes of the series. The first Sunday, September 23, Rob McCall will offer "An Obscure Lecture on Natural Theology."

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost:
Today's liturgy is similar in theme to the feast of the Holy Cross (September 14), which always falls near this Sunday of the Church year. The Gospel reading is Peter's acknowledgement of Jesus as the Messiah, which was followed by Jesus' first prediction of his crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus calls his followers to pattern their own lives on his, sharing in the self-giving love which leads to the Cross.
In the Wisdom writings of the Hebrew scriptures which we are using in our first readings during this period, the term "wisdom" is not simply a function of thought but is the personification of God. Strikingly, God, as Holy Wisdom, is feminine. The person who would be truly wise will live in God. God, Holy Wisdom, will give us her counsel and guidance.
The second lesson is again drawn from the Epistle of James, an intensely practical discourse on Christian living. In today's reading, James exhorts us to learn self control, especially in our speaking. The tongue, when disciplined, is used to glorify God, but when undisciplined, can cause hurt and damage.
The People of God enact in song, story, and sacrament their unity with Jesus dying and rising in their midst. In baptism and Eucharist we join him in his death and resurrection. We speak and sing our praise to him in our worship and in our lives of ministry, acceptance, and love for all people.
