Teens Allocate $3,000 in Grants to Hartford Community Agencies

After an intensive year of study, five teens in JTConnect's Teen Leadership and Philanthropy Institute course completed their year of study with an inspiring grants ceremony at Beth El Temple on Monday evening, May 7. During the course of the year, the teens learned about philanthropy in the classroom and then quickly moved to the field, visiting local community agencies and receiving grant requests. After thoughtful consideration, the teens awarded nine local Jewish agencies with a total of $3,000. To learn more about TLPI, click here.
May 9: Luncheon and Film Program at Beth El Temple Celebrates 100 Years of Leonard Bernstein

Join Beth El Temple's Chai Society for a celebration of Leonard Bernstein at 100 on Wednesday, May 9 from noon to 2 p.m. Cantor Joseph Ness will introduce the riveting documentary film Reaching for the Note, about Leonard Bernstein's life and musical contributions. May 9:  "Monuments Men: A Daughter's Discovery of Her Father's Role in the Search for Nazi Plunder"

On Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m., Baltimore journalist Susan Fisher Sullam will tell the fascinating story of her discovery of her father's role in "Task Force Fisher" in a program at the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. As a member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff during WWII, Lt. Commander Joel Fisher documented one of the greatest treasure hunts in history. His records chronicled how the task force located and recovered billions of dollars' worth of Nazi loot during the final month of the war. Tickets are $10 if you pre-register or $12 at the door. Greater Hartford's first Tekes Ma'avar ceremony, marking the transition from Yom HaZikaron to Yom Ha'Atzmaut.
Young Israel of West Hartford joined with the Bess & Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy, Hebrew High School of New England and the Solomon Schechter Day School to organize Greater Hartford's first ever Tekes Ma'avar (transition ceremony) to remember the more than 24,000 people who have given their lives for the State of Israel and to celebrate the miracle and gift of the modern State of Israel. It was an evening of remembrance, memorial and prayer followed by song, dancing, food and lots of fun. Hundreds of people from the Greater Hartford, Springfield and New Haven areas attended.

Solomon Schechter Day School opened its doors to the community on April 20 for a special PJ Library/Israel's 70th Anniversary Shabbat RELISH, featuring songs, dancing and stories. The room was filled with ruach (spirit) as we celebrated together! Federation's Israeli Young Emissaries, Roni and Tomer, organized games, dancing and Israeli trivia for the K-8 students.

UConn Hillel celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut with a week of programs, celebrations and educational opportunities. Huskies for Israel - the Israel Club of UConn Hillel - invited multiple speakers to campus to share their stories about life in the IDF, advocacy in Israeli universities, life as an Israeli dancer, and more. Hundreds of students learned more about Israel and strengthened their connection.

May 9: Beth El Temple's Cantor Joseph Ness will present a free program on "Israel, the Land of Music" as part of its Music University series on Wednesday, May 9 from noon to 2 p.m. You'll learn about Israeli music and music that has been influenced by Israel.  Musical examples and slides will highlight the lectures. These sessions are held ahead of BEMA's final concert of the season: an Israel 70th Anniversary Concert on June 3 at 7 p.m. Click here for more information. May 10 and 17:  B'nai Tikvoh-Sholom invites you to participate in improv Israeli style with Tali Bass, the Mandell JCC's Israeli Emissary, on two consecutive Thursdays - May 10 and 17 - at 7 p.m. at the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. We'll have fun warming up our bodies and getting out of our comfort zones! Along the way, we'll play some improv games, explore the Israeli theater world and even learn a few words of Hebrew. May 22: Federation's Solomon Society invites all men to a lunch and learn with Israeli Ambassador Arthur Koll on Tuesday, May 22 from noon to 1 p.m. at The Hartford Club, 46 Prospect Street, Hartford. Ambassador Koll will discuss his experiences making the case for Israel over a 35-year career in Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including service in Serbia, Montenegro, and the United States. Dr. Glinert will take us on an adventure from the creation of Hebrew in biblical times to its reincarnation as the everyday language of the modern Jewish state. Entertainment will include klezmer music, dance performances, and an Israeli torch lighting ceremony. HERO Center Opens, Offers Holocaust Education Resources

The Holocaust Education Resource and Outreach (HERO) Center is open, and it has a wealth of educational resources to share. A joint initiative of Voices of Hope and the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford, the HERO Center offers free museum tours and a speakers bureau of Holocaust survivors who will speak at your school or organization. Full Scholarships to Hartford Seminary's International Peacemaking Program Available for Jewish Students

Are you passionate about peace? Interested in exploring peacebuilding with Christian and Muslim peers? Full scholarships to Hartford Seminary are available for Jews interested in interfaith peacebuilding through the International Peacemaking Program (IPP), a one-year, fully funded learning opportunity that includes a six-course graduate certificate and a skill-building co-curriculum. You'll learn about the Abrahamic traditions and receive training in dialogue methods, mediation, public speaking, working with the media and project planning. You can apply your graduate credits toward a master's degree at Hartford Seminary; credits are typically also transferable to other institutions. Admission to this program is rolling. Shavuot
May 19 - 21

Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, is one of three major pilgrimage festivals established in the Torah (along with Passover and Sukkot). During Shavuot, Jews traveled to the Temple in Jerusalem to make sacrifices and give thanks for the abundance of the land. Shavuot coincides with the first wheat harvest in the late spring; it later became associated with the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. During this holiday, it's traditional to eat stay up all night studying Torah (a practice called Tikkun Leil Shavuot), eat dairy foods, and read from the Book of Ruth. This year, Shavuot begins at sundown on Saturday, May 19. Come out and join the fun!

PJ Library invites children and families to a Shavuot themed Shabbat on Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Jonathan's Dream Playground, located at the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. B'nai Tikvoh-Sholom invites you to go beyond the letter of the law during its "Torah, Heschel & Starbucks" Tikun Leil Shavuot on Saturday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. We'll examine how the Torah directs us to act ethically and morally beyond what the law itself requires... and we'll learn what it has to do with Starbucks! The PTO at Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford invests significant resources into top-quality professional development opportunities for our educators.  Some of our teachers receive weekly coaching from leading educators.  Our principal, Rabbi Zev Silver, recently attended the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Conference in Boston. More than 6,000 educators came together there to learn and be inspired! With the incredible presenters and resources, Rabbi Silver felt like a child in the world's largest candy store.  It was an amazing experience and we are planning to send some teachers to next year's conference.

May 22: "Back to the Old Country" Food Tasting and Book Talk

Jeffrey Yoskowitz and co-author Liz Alpern of The Gefilteria embarked on a quest for their Ashkenazi culinary roots that has brought them to Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Hungary. During a food tasting and book talk on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 6 pm at Infinity Hall, 32 Front Street, Hartford, Yoskowitz will paint a picture of the past, present, and future of Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine. This program is part of the Jewish Hartford European Roots Project, a new collaboration among UConn, Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford, and other community organizations to document and share the rich diversity of European Jewish life before the Holocaust. Troy, Ph.D., an English professor at the University of Hartford, will speak about her book, "Strange Bird: The Albatross Press and the Third Reich," on Tuesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom, 55 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury.  This free event is sponsored by the Sisterhood and Couples Book Groups and is open to the community. Albatross Press, a precursor of the Penguin publishing house in Germany, was Europe's largest publisher of American and British literature and distributed works by modern authors such as D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway.  Even though Albatross was funded by British-Jewish interests, it was tolerated by the Nazi regime for both economic and propaganda gains. May 24: Children's Reading Partners' 20th Anniversary Celebration

Children's Reading Partners will hold its 20th anniversary celebration on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Real Art Ways in Hartford. The entire community is welcome to attend the dessert reception and program. Since its founding in 1998, Children's Reading Partners has conducted over 95,000 volunteer reading sessions with more than 6,000 at-risk preschool and elementary school students in Greater Hartford, and it has distributed more than 6,500 books to students and their classrooms. The celebration's guest speaker is Judy Schachner, the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of more than 26 children's books including the beloved Skippyjon Jones series. Born into a working class New England family, Ms. Schachner will discuss how her imagination and love of books helped her survive a challenging childhood. June 12 Emanuel Synagogue Holds Bereavement Workshop

The Emanuel Synagogue's Chesed Committee is sponsoring two bereavement workshops at the synagogue, which is located at 160 Mohegan Drive in West Hartford. The first workshop, "Exploring the Myths of Grieving," took place on Tuesday, May 8. The second, "Practices of Belonging, Optimism and Meaning," will be held on Tuesday, June 12. Both are being led by Maria Sirois, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist, inspirational leader and author. The workshops are held from 6 to 9 p.m.  and  include a light supper and evening services. UConn Hillel Plays in National Basketball Tournament

Held annually at the University of Maryland, the National Hillel Basketball Tournament provides an opportunity for Jewish students from across the U.S. to connect with new friends and enjoy the game. UConn Hillel was excited to return to the tournament for the second time. "It was a lot of fun playing basketball with other students like myself and celebrating Shabbat as one large community," said  Brandon Milich '21. "It was a great way to meet other like-minded individuals and build relationships with others while having fun." Team captain Jacob Rizick '20 added, "It's great seeing Jewish students coming from all different schools and areas of the country to participate in this tournament.
