FACES & PLACES POW
The Chamber hosted nine FWISD students for Vital Link, a one-week program for 7th-grade students to correlate what they are learning in the classroom to success in the workplace. Dr. Anthony Edwards, senior vice president of Talent Development, Attraction and Retention for the Chamber, said: "The internship helps students connect learning inside the classroom to careers after graduation and practice the skills they learn in school while in a workplace setting." Read more here.

The man in THAT hat: It might be the same hat, too, a $50 topper bought in 1979. If you haven't guessed, it's Dwight Yoakam and he is the signature solo entertainment Nov. 5 for the University of North Texas Health Science Center Legends Concert at Bass Performance Hall. Yoakam, a singer-songwriter, musician and actor, has sold more than 25 million albums (12 gold) and is a 21-time nominated, multiple Grammy Award winner. He also has been in more than 40 films, including Sling Blade, Wedding Chasers and Panic Room. Chase and J.P. Morgan are sponsors and tickets go on sale June 29, but country girl and corporate relations superstar Lee Ann Embry already has two premium tickets.

Cheers never stop at Bravo! When Mr. B dines at Bravo! Cucina Italiana, he has to have the calamari fritta with creamy horseradish appetizer and the warm chocolate cake with molten lava and vanilla bean gelato for dessert. That doesn't leave many calories for the entrée. So B and GM Mathew Sampugnaro (that's easy for you to spell) worked together to come up with a few light menu items. Favored is the spicy bay scallop marinara, though the grilled salmon and chicken caprese are worth your attention. The outstanding Italian wedding soup only has 150 calories. Mathew has a $100 Chef's Dinner gift certificate for two to make weighty decisions theirownselves.

Concerts, with cheese: Summer time and the living is easy, especially if you're a Midici Fort Worth Reward Program member. If you join, you receive a free (Mr. B's favorite word) Margherita pizza and a chance to win two tickets to various summer concerts, including ones featuring Willie Nelson, Chris Brown, Maren Morris, Counting Crows and Rascal Flats. If it sounds as if Midici Fort Worth has a lot going on, it's because the Crain owners (real estate, government, travel, volunteerism) are juggling lots of tossed pizzas. If you already dig Midici off West 7th or haven't been, this $50 gift card will be dough you will love.

The Wright way to do business: One of the negatives about being self-employed is you never get to be much of a leader within the company. On the bright side, you don't ever have to be a follower. John Wright of Simple Leadership Strategies is probably not THE man for solopreneurs. But for every other company, John is DA MAN! He is the doctor of transformations, turning managers into leaders, employees into partners, work groups into teams and customers into advocates. Gather your folks and have John come visit your workplace. Listen for one hour as he showcases his micro workshop -- Creating Meaningful & Lasting Change. Your strategies will change. Quite simple.

Congratulations to the June 13th

A WORD FROM OUR GOLD SPONSORS

HE SAID, SHE SAID, THEY SAIDSoundBytes
Give Dane credit: Ever noticed http or https leading off a URL? Dane Young, Credit Card Guy, says https is more secure and only do your financial transactions on sites with that URL. He also says that every credit card transaction in the near future will require a chip and PIN. After that, more and more will require biometrics.

Parading out of town ... boohoo: XTO Energy, long a fabulous community partner, is moving its headquarters to Houston. It said goodbye to Fort Worth with an ad in the Chamber's Annual Meeting program that featured a cowboy boot and read: "We're taking the next step and we thank you Fort Worth...Fort Worth has been more than just our headquarters. It's been our community, our stomping grounds and our home. Thanks for all the wonderful years."

You're kidding, right? Chamber VP Netty Matthews is a playa in the world of puns. She might add videographer Michael Ryan of Four Thirds Creative to her pals in puns. Michael: "Why do math teachers get stressed out? Cause they've got a lot of problems." Netty, as usual, has the last word: "When Ruth fell off the motorcycle, her boyfriend drove on Ruthlessly."

BOLO for rare bird: According to Carlos de la Torre, fiancée Kim Matthys of HDR Engineers is looking for an early 1960s Ford Falcon convertible with a V8. Now back to our regularly scheduled newsletter.

Designing Fort Worth: During last week's Fort Worth Business Press BusinessforBreakfast at the Fort Worth Club, architects and planners discussed Fort Worth opportunities.
  • Hometown view - Michael Bennett of Bennett Benner Partners says the guys that design roads are the most powerful planners. "Transportation," Bennett said, "is something we can't continue to ignore. I don't think we're doing a good enough job of directing the growth that is happening around us."
  • Out of town view - Karen Alschuler, who offices in San Francisco with Perkins + Will, has been to 84 cities and is impressed with Fort Worth. She sees big opportunities -- "You have a lot of pavement." -- with the Medical District and the Trinity River. She loves what Pittsburgh has done where its three rivers meet, Toronto as an international city and San Fran for its best and brightest technology centers.
There is not enough room in B2B Insider to cover everything important Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Robert Kaplan spoke about at last week's Chamber luncheon. Some highlights:
  • Texas is bucking the trends throughout most of the country because of migration of people and jobs the past 15 years and the expectations the next 15...22 million to 28.5 to 40 million people.
  • Kaplan is just a "3-rate hike" proponent for 2018. He sees strong growth nationally in 2018, weaker in 2019 and down to 1.75 percent in 2020.
  • He feels strongly that STEM education, our college readiness, our 3rd grade reading levels are lagging. He said we need better skill levels and education levels to take advantage of our technological expertise.
  • Global trade is an opportunity, not a threat. Job disruption is not because of trade or globalization, it's because of technology. NAFTA needs an update, and we have to have serious discussions about technology transfer and IP with China.
"The three B's of speeches: 'Be brief. Be bright. Be gone."'

-- John Avila, Chairman
Byrne Construction Services
accepting Chamber Spirit of Enterprise Award

Revolving message: Lupe Zamora, Zamora Construction, bought a cement truck. Mr. B thought the revolving cylinder would be a place to advertise the B2B Insider newsletter and recruit Chamber members. Ok, by Lupe. Unfortunately, B2B isn't Fortified yet financially to advertise, but if you want to donate signage, we need: Mr. B, THE BEAST.

Runnin' the old pros ragged: Summer interns at the Chamber are at the low end of the totem pole, alongside Mr. B. Sometimes, Mr. B can make fun of an intern and get away with it. The two this summer seem a bit eager and energetic. Give it another week. Thomas Barrow, Texas A&M, is a Communications major and helping Lydia (Door No. 3) Hall with events. Erin Main is an International Business and Advertising major at Northwood College in her home state of Michigan. She is helping Andra (not in my) House in PR / Marketing.

Doctor in the house: New Chamber member DPC Healthcare (Direct Primary Care) has a low-cost plan for near-concierge healthcare services. Best fit is for larger corporate and self-insureds, though it will work with individuals. Patient / doctor ratio is 1,000-1, about a third of normal healthcare. Marketer Brent Russell says DPC expects to handle 90 percent of all your needs and in a more personal way, including house calls.

Did you know? Judy McDonald, top laborer at Workforce Solutions Tarrant County, is the President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors / Workforce Development Council.

Touché! David Bloxom, President at Speed Fab-Crete, during a Chamber luncheon answered the question, "What is creativity?" with "Thinking outside the box." American National Bank of Texas' Prudence Mathis, ever creative, quickly responded, "What box?"
