Dear Mercy Families,
Now that we are well into the 2018-2019 school year, I hope you've had an opportunity to visit the school for some of the recent events such as New Parent Orientation, Parent Night and our dynamic Mom's Club or Dad's Club welcoming meetings. I also hope families are finding opportunities to connect with each other as well, since the high school experience can be an enjoyable time in building community for families who support our students.
Years of Service: If you attended Parent Night, you saw first hand the heartfelt commitment and talent of our staff. Mercy is well known throughout the Detroit metropolitan area for the strength of our academic curriculum. All of our team members are committed to supporting the needs of each Mercy student. We are blessed and grateful to have these team members as a part of the Mercy family in sharing their many talents with us!
Kudos to Mrs. Tarplin: Our Dean of Students, Mrs Eleasha Tarplin was selected to join the Mercy Institute Ethics Committee. This is a diverse national level committee comprised of various roles and will operate for all Mercy schools as a resource in offering guidance in dealing with sensitive ethical issues. This invitation is a testament to the wonderful character and interpersonal skills Mrs. Tarplin has, and this experience will also help her to further enhance her depth in dealing with difficult situations.
Way to go, Coach Venos: Mercy Swim & Dive Coach Mike Venos was named the Michigan High School Athletic Coach Association Coach of the Year in Girls Swimming! Coach of the Year selections are based on the performance of program, contribution to the sport, school and community. Coach Venos will receive this award at the MHSCA luncheon in November.
MACAC President: Mercy Counselor
Holly M. Markiecki-Bennetts, SCL, LLPC, NCC is President of the Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling and will serve through May 2019. We are so lucky to have her breadth of knowledge assist our students in the college planning process! Read more here.
Student Activities Coordinator: This year Mrs. Cindy Richter accepted additional responsibilities in assuming the role of Student Activities Coordinator. This newly created position will help to support our students in their efforts in student leadership, student led activities, and student expressed desire to enhance School Spirit.
Student Wellness
Distracted Driving: Distracted driving fatalities are the number 1 killer of people between the ages of 16-29. This is an issue that is concerning for our students. We are thrilled to bring a Distracted Driving Prevention Program to Mercy on
October 9 that will demo an Augmented Reality Distracted Driving Education Simulator for our Junior and Senior students. This

Mercy Flu Clinic: Flu season is quickly approaching and we invite our students and their families to participate in our annual in-house Flu Clinic scheduled for
October 3rd from
1:30 -
3:30 pm. This convenience is offered through Alana's Foundation, in partnership with the Michigan Community Wellness Visiting Nurse Association, as a way to help prevent our students from missing out on school lessons and the co-curriculars they enjoy; as well as to avoid the potentially serious effects the flu may pose. You are asked to bring a copy of your insurance card, and Alana's Foundation will cover the cost for those without any insurance.
A
consent form found here must be completed in order to receive a flu shot. For insurance or vaccination related questions, please call the Visiting Nurse Association at 248-967-1440.
Mercy Mission
The Mercy Girl Effect: Every other year a group of our students attend a Mercy Student Leadership conference in Pennsylvania. Through this 4 day conference, our students connect with students from other Mercy schools across the country to learn skills that will help them plan and lead projects in support of the Mercy Critical Concerns. These student led activities allow students to personalize and apply the Mercy charism with meaningful and impactful work.
This year, our students are focusing on the concern to Care for the Earth, and efforts will support the Sisters in Kenya who are helping women plant indigenous trees. Kenya is currently dealing with environmental issues, including deforestation. Throughout the year, we will share more information about this project that allows us to show mercy globally, locally, and personally.
Take 10 at 10: Our Campus Ministry Team creatively works to help our students and staff make meaningful connections in support of our Catholic Identity and the Mercy Mission. New this year is the opportunity to join in each day for 10 minutes of shared prayer at
10 am in the Chapel. This time allows for a peaceful chance to take a breath, recharge and reconnect. In addition to providing time to deepen our relationship with God and one another, this short time for prayer and meditation can improve our health, happiness and concentration.
175 Years of the Sisters of Mercy in the US: Throughout 2018, as a Mercy global network we will be commemorating and celebrating the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the beginning of a vibrant legacy of service.
That legacy continues today in numerous and diverse ministries, in hospitals, in universities and high schools, in parishes, in shelters and in immigrant detention centers, adhering always to the Mercy vow to serve people who are poor, sick and uneducated. Our Campus Ministry Team is cleverly working on 175 ideas to help us remember throughout the year our commitment to the Critical Concerns and membership in a larger community!
Clothing Drive: Each year, all Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Detroit come together in a clothing drive outreach project,
Champions of Charity. This St. Vincent De Paul sponsored event is held in preparation for the upcoming cold weather to provide assistance for our neighbors in need.
Champions of Charity is a fun competition between these schools to determine who will win the trophy for collecting the most clothing donations by weight per student population.
Champions of Charity collections will be accepted from
September 24th - September 30. For your convenience, the collection pod is located in the parking lot near the fence along 11 Mile Rd. A strategy tip: although all clothing donations are welcome, weight is the factor to winning. Therefore heavier clothing items such as boots and coats help tip the scales! We appreciate your support as we work together to ensure those in need stay warm throughout the winter months.
I thank you for allowing me to share with you the many reasons we have to be proud of our school. Thank you for allowing us to support your daughter as she becomes a woman who makes a difference!

Welcome Back!
We would like to thank everyone who attended our Welcome Back Dinner on September 10th, it was a huge success! We started out the meeting with a brief overview from our president, Susan Telang, of what the Moms Club does and how we support Mercy, we introduced our board members and committee chairs, the committee chairs had a chance to promote their committee, and we ended the evening with a lovely strolling dinner.

Mercy Family Bonfire
All Mercy students, parents, alumnae and friends are invited to the Dads Club Spirit Week Bonfire Thursday, September 27 from 8pm-10 at the softball diamonds. A tasty Taco Food Truck will be on site and guests will have the option of 3 tacos and a drink (beef or chicken and veggie quesadilla.) Plenty of other goodies and music!  Congratulations to Katie Wildern '19 who won several art awards earlier this summer. She was awarded three 1st place and one 4th place Best In Show drawing awards and earned a prestigious Gold Ribbon Scholarship in July at the Oakland County Fair. As a result, she entered to compete at the Michigan State Fair over Labor Day weekend where she received more accolades including 1st place colored pencil; 1st place digital art; 2nd place pastel; 2nd place charcoal; 2nd place painting; 3rd place pencil and the Michigan State Fair $500 Art Scholarship! |
CONGRATS to
Lily Beasley '20 who won first place in the U.S. National Junior (under 18) Fiddle Championship at the Edinboro Highland Games and Scottish Festival held earlier this month in Pennsylvania.
In order to qualify to compete in Nationals, a fiddler has to have won first place at a regional competition or place first through third in the prior year's national contest. Lily placed third in 2017 and has been competing nationally for three years. Lily has been studying violin since kindergarten, playing exclusively Scottish style fiddle for eight years. Lily was judged by three former US National champions, all professional Scottish fiddlers and music instructors. Check out a video of her playing here:

The
International Thespian Society Troupe 5693 held its annual Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, September 11th. The returning six members were honored for their theater work last year, three girls transferred their membership from Ladywood's chapter Troupe 1458, and 15 girls were inducted into the troupe. The troupe totals 24 members.
Both President, Kylie Kreucher, and Vice President, Emma Pickett, were awarded with the Honor Thespian status which signifies a minimum of 600 hours of theater excellence. This is the highest honor in the Troupe!

Make a Difference Day - September 28

Mercy Make a Difference Day
Friday, September 28, 2018
On this day, during Spirit Week, the entire Mercy School, staff and students, will be going out into the community to do service. Imagine what an impact 750 people doing 3 hours of service can do! We are expecting 100% attendance so please do not make college visits or doctor appointments on that day.
Schedule for the Day
- School will start at 8:00 a.m. with a meeting in Adviser Group followed by a short prayer service, directions for the day and boarding of the buses.
- Students will travel to the location and work with their Adviser and Adviser Group from approximately 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. doing a variety of service tasks. Students will earn 3 hours of community service towards their graduation requirement.
- The buses will bring the groups back to school. Lunch will be provided.
- The day will end at 1:45 p.m.
- Students need to wear their Mercy Make A Difference Day t-shirt. We are asking students to bring these in ahead of time to make sure they have them the morning of the event to wear to the site they are assigned. New students will receive a t-shirt the day of the event.

CLICK HERE to access Privit. Please complete these forms by Friday, September 21. Students who do not have completed forms will be assigned service at Mercy High School. Participation is mandatory. The Mercy Make a Difference Day Committee has coordinated with many organizations that are counting on us for our service on that day. The goal is to have all of Mercy (students and staff) working together in the community.
Students who do not participate may jeopardize their participation in further Spirit Week activities including the Homecoming Dance. All students not in attendance (due to pre-arranged absence, illness or injury) will still be expected to give 3 hours of service through Mercy either during unscheduled hours or before and after school.This must be completed in order to attend Homecoming. If your daughter has a pre-arranged commitment on September 28 documentation of the absence and prior service completion will be expected to attend Homecoming. Please contact Campus Ministry to find service opportunities throughout the school.
Appropriate Dress
Please make sure your daughter is appropriately dressed to do service on that day. Jeans or comfortable pants, sturdy, closed-toe shoes and the service day t-shirt is necessary. Students may bring sunscreen and bug spray if needed. More specific details on dress will be provided by your daughter's Adviser. Please note that most sites suggest bringing heavy-duty gardening gloves.
WATER BOTTLES - NEW THIS YEAR!
To keep with Mercy's focus this year on the Critical Concern of the Sisters of Mercy Care for the Earth, plastic water bottles will not be provided. We ask that ALL students bring a recyclable water bottle from home to fill prior to loading the bus. Making sure it is marked with the student's name would be helpful as well.
Parent Volunteer/Support
Parent volunteers are welcome to join us for the day. Please submit this
online form to volunteer by Friday, September 21. Parents will need to provide their own transportation. You can also support the day by providing dessert or drink for lunch. Advisers will have a sign-up for their groups.
We are very excited about this day. This is what we stand for as a school. In the words of Catherine McAuley,

Mr. Jerry Beasley of the Portofino restaurant in Wyandotte, Michigan and the Mercy French Program co-sponsored a magical French evening cruise for Mercy guests, families and friends aboard the MVP Portofino on the most perfect evening September 14, 2018. Mr. Beasley generously donated the proceeds from this cruise to help support the French Honor Society and the French program to help enrich the experiences available for French students to participate in community cultural activities.
The 3-hour cruise on the Rivière de Détroit was accompanied by a French strolling dinner representing the various regions of France. The French dinner menu included: Quiche Lorraine from the Alsace region; Pâté en Croûte from the Loire area; un plateau de fromages gourmands from La Bourgogne; Poulet Sauté à la Crème from La Normandie. The desserts included miniature French pastries as well as French macarons donated by Trader Joe and Mrs. Amy Kitchen. Wines were selected and paired with the French menu items by Mr. Jerry Beasley, our very own sommelier.
The guests dined on authentic bistro ambiance with tables decorated in the traditional red, white and blue each having their own flickering Tour Eiffel and French flag. The FHS officers, Lily Beasley, Katie Bullock, Charlotte Bridges, Alley Neary, former Mercy Mom, Mrs. Amy Kitchen, Madame Corte and Madame Campbell truly provided our guests with an amazing atmosphere for our floating Paris café! The French music playlist was created by Mme Campbell and Brynna Connolly which completed the oh so French evening. Mr. Beasley graciously hired a DJ to play the French classics i.e. Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, Maurice Chevalier as well as modern French music selections. A silent auction was held on board and we would like to extend a grand "Merci" to all our supportive donors and our guests who generously purchased our French themed items or gave a monetary donation to the French Honor Society.
Our kind donors included Mr. Charles Bullock, Mrs. Amy Kitchen, Mrs. Maureen Langan, Mr. Paul Grosz (Cuisine Restaurant), Mrs Julee Waldo (Paige Ryan Salon), Ms. Shannon McGroarty (R Place Salon), Mr. Thomas Benadier (My Little Paris and Bookstore) and Plum Market. A special "Merci" to the Clark family for their very generous donation to the FHS and to Mr. Holdwick who helped with the French flags.
This inaugural event was a sell out in 1 week and due to popular demand we hope to make this as an annual event! The Detroit skyline and the Ambassador Bridge were captivating scenes as we sailed by in the evening moonlight with French music playing in the background. Mercy Beaucoup Mr. Beasley and the amazing staff at the Portofino Restaurant for this simply magnifique French cruise and evening!

Once again Mercy will host a free influenza clinic on
Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in partnership with the Michigan Community Wellness Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) and Alana's Foundation. The foundation was established in 2009 in memory of then five year old Alana Yaksich who died of influenza in 2003.
The clinic will be held from
1:30-3:30 pm in Mercy's lobby (Auditorium/Gym Lobby Area) on
October 3rd and is available to students, staff, and families of Mercy. It does, however,
require advance registration for each person who wishes to receive the vaccination here on October 3rd. We have provided all of the information you need. Please print, complete and
return the Assessment and Consent Form to the Reception Area
no later than September 28, 2018.
A separate consent form must be completed (in its entirety) for each person who will be vaccinated. Parents must complete and sign the form for anyone under the age of 18.
All consent forms are required in advance because the VNA must determine the actual number of doses needed for the day of the clinic.
Please note: On the day of the flu clinic, any person who has pre-registered will need to present
a picture ID and the
insurance card (or a
copy of the insurance card) in order to receive the vaccination. Vaccinations
will not be given to anyone whose consent form is incomplete or unsigned. Most insurance companies cover the cost of the vaccination but Alana's Foundation will cover the cost for anyone without any insurance.
Mercy is happy to offer our facility for this clinic. We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity for your daughter(s) and/or yourself. Please consult with your family physician regarding any questions about the vaccine.
Please note: Only quadrivalent injectable flu vaccine is being offered. There will be no flu mist. For insurance or vaccination related questions, please call the Visiting Nurse Association at 248-967-1440.

The Senior Blessing Mass for the Class of 2019 will be held
Friday, October 19th during 6th and 7th hour at approximately 12:50pm. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend this mass of sisterhood and medallions will be distributed at this mass as the girls wear their cap and gown.

Parent Teacher Conferences
|
|
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled to take place
Thursday, October 4th from 1:30pm-3:30pm and 5:30-7:30pm in the gym and cafeteria. Please note school will be dismissed at 11:30am. Five minute conferences with teachers will be scheduled using an online registration tool, which will be sent next week. Counselings will schedule 10 minute meetings.

Fall sports are in action! Field Hockey is playing hard every game.
Volleyball is spiking their way to the top in league play and continues to make headlines. Golf is finding success and placing at tournaments. Swim & Dive stay strong with plenty of meets ahead while Cross Country and Equestrian continue on their courses to victory. Cheer on all your Marlins sports teams! Check the

Young Mercy Leaders Pilgrimage and Tour
Dublin, Ireland
July 15 - 26, 2019
Classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 Mercy Families:
The Young Mercy Leaders program began in 2011 with the visit of Mercy secondary school and college students from around the world to Mercy International Centre. There they discovered together the riches of the Mercy story and were able to return to their daily lives better equipped to be leaders in their schools and world.
In
2019, the Young Mercy Leaders Pilgrimage for secondary school students will be held again in Dublin,
Ireland at Mercy International Centre
Tuesday, July 16th through Friday, July 19th, 2019.

In our Foundress Catherine McAuley's time, the building that is now Mercy International Centre, Baggot Street, Dublin, was a thriving center of education and training and it is wonderful that for these 4 days, the voices of young people from Mercy schools around the world, will once again echo through the corridors and rooms. "Our hope is that Catherine McAuley will become a living presence in the lives of those who participate in this pilgrimage," says Breege Donohoe RSM, a member of the 2013 planning committee:

In the week following the Pilgrimage itself we will explore the beautiful country of
Ireland. Our tour will be guided by
Irish Catholic tour escort and storyteller Batt Burns and will include stops in Knock, Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Sneem, Killarney and many more of
Ireland's most treasured places. While in Batt's hometown of Sneem we will work with their local Youth Ministry Group on a service project and will spend the evening with the locals enjoying traditional
Irish music and dancing. Batt may even have a story of two to share. When we make our way back to Dublin making a stop at Blarney Castle on the way. We will close with the Catherine McAuley Walking Tour of Dublin where we can experience more richly the Mercy story by exploring many landmarks of importance in the life of Catherine and the history of the Sisters of Mercy. We will explore more of the rich history of Dublin.

Over the summer Class of 2018 graduate Clarisa Russenberger designed our featured Media Center wall art which reflects a journey through Mercy! Weaver Communications printed and installed our legacy wall that captivates Mercy life. We're delighted to showcase our new mural during the Reunion Weekend. The Media Center is buzzing with a lot of Freshwoman research assignments, ask your daughter about the all the credible Gale resources she's accessing on her AML app!

Quiz Bowl
Hey, ladies! Do you love TRIVIA, TIMBITS, and TEAMWORK? Do you want to earn a Varsity letter? Quiz Bowl is the team for you! Practices are every Tuesday from
3-4 pm. Local meets are approximately once a month, with opportunities to travel to Lansing, Chicago, and Atlanta for major tournaments. We are also taking an educational trip to Central Europe over Easter! Students interested in participating in this academic team should contact the Quiz Bowl coach, Mrs. Marquard at

Pro-Life Club
Plans are underway for the 2019 March for Life trip,
January 17-20, 2019. Mercy will join thousands of others exercising their 1st Amendment right to peacefully assemble and be the voices for those who have been silenced by abortion. Highlights of our trip will be the March, Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine, Arlington Cemetery and potentially a tour of the White House. Cost is only $225 and includes 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner, overnight accommodations at an area church and pick-up and drop-off at Mercy.

NHS Tutor Request
The National Honor Society is available and willing to help tutor in many subject areas. All requests are made by filling out an
online form available here. It is also accessible for students on the NHS tutoring page in Schoology. Each time a form is submitted, it is for one tutoring session for one subject. If additional help is needed or another tutor request for a different subject, simply submit another form. There is no limit.
Save the Date for Father Daughter Dance!
Dads and daughters be sure to mark your calendars for the annual Father Daughter Dance on Saturday, February 2 at 8pm at Mercy hosted by the junior class.
All Mercy Dads, current and future students (at least 10 years old) and alumnae are welcome. Tickets are $30 for each Dad, with no additional cost for his daughter(s). Join us for an evening to remember!
