Message from the Rector
June 18, 2018

Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how." He also said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." We walk by faith, not by sight.
Mark 4:26-27, 30-32; 2 Corinthians 5:7

In this week's Gospel reading Jesus makes two important points: a simple effort can have huge results and that we should simply give it over to God and he will handle it.  Often in life, the simplest things can have the most profound effects. Has someone ever done something for you that was a simple act, but meant the world to you, or was just what you needed in your life. Has someone ever said something to you that sparked an idea or was just what you needed to hear that day? Has someone ever said something to you that changed your life? You see, often the simplest things that we can do for a person or say to a person may make the most profound effects on that person's life, much like the mustard seed that grows into a huge shrub. Perhaps an idea that you have could turn into a business or community project that will help people you don't even know, much like the seed that was scattered and grew without even tending to it. It's great when we can see the results of our efforts, but sometimes we don't. If only the Wright brothers could see how their flight experiment lasting 59 seconds back in 1903 led to the development of airplanes that help millions of people travel daily, rockets that put men on the moon, and space craft that have probed the farthest reaches of our solar system and help us see the beginnings of the entire universe! A small mustard seed can become a giant shrub.

We are thinking about the ways that we here at All Saints can engage in ministry and mission here and in the community. Remember the words of Canon Claire Woodley last week that the key is just to start and do something; some programs will succeed and some may have to be rethought. In any case, our efforts can have profound effects.  So let us take heed to the words of St. Paul in his Second Letter to the Corinthians and "walk by faith, and not by sight." We should have the faith that God's going to take care of us in whatever situation we find ourselves in, because seeds scattered will grow and bear fruit, even when we don't know how it happens. And we should always strive to be the best people of God that we can be, because you never know what impact that may have on someone else or the community. The things that inspire us to say or do may have an effect that is beyond our wildest imaginations. We are the hands, feet, and mouths of God in the world, and through us the Kingdom of God that Jesus talked about in his parables, can be realized and manifested in the world today.

Notes from the Vestry

The Vestry and Wardens met for their monthly meeting on Monday, May 21. A Report from the Vestry is forthcoming; however, there are two items for your information or consideration. This information was shared at all masses this week.

1)  Discontinuation of 5th Sunday Combined Masses
Due to low attendance overall and to avoid confusion over mass times, the Vestry and Wardens voted to discontinue Combined Masses on fifth Sundays of the month, beginning August 1, 2018. There will still be one Mass for the Solemnity of All Saints (our Patronal/Titular Feast) and on the 3rd Sunday of January for the Annual Parish Meeting. One Mass may also occur on the occasion of the Bishop's Visitation and for special parish events, with ample notice.

2)  Consideration of Adjusting Sunday Mass Times
In order to ensure that all masses can be conducted with due reverence and solemnity, to minimize any disruption to parishioners as they are worshipping and praying, and to prevent the Celebrants from having to rush through the liturgies due to time constraints, an adjustment of Sunday Mass times is being considered. With the increase in attendance, particularly at the 9:30 AM Mass, it is difficult to conduct the mass within the prescribed time frame and allow enough time to prepare the altar for the 11 AM High Mass. In addition, there is concern about parishioners who arrive early for the 11 AM Mass and have to sit in the chapel during the latter portion of the 9:30 Mass, frequently during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. To address this matter, the Clergy, Vestry, and Wardens are considering shifting the two earlier mass times from 8:00 AM to 7:45 or 7:30 AM, and from 9:30 AM to 9:15 or 9:00 AM. Over the next several Sundays, you will be asked for your opinion before a final decision is made. Opinions and suggestions may also be e-mailed to the church office, if you anticipate that you will not be in church over the next few weeks.
